I had an idea to play a Hobgoblin that became a Cleric after his commander succumbed to a mysterious illness, and later rose as a vampire. Since Hobgoblins aren't too religious outside of Maglubiyet, he'd have to turn to one of the Human deities for help. Not only would this give more importance to the Goblinoid monsters, it would also make the vampire more of an ass-kicking general than an aristocrat we're so familiar with.

I love the opening of this episode.

Throwback to wampires! Great intro and excellent dissertation on the classic creature. A certain vampire is (maybe) about to make an appearance in our homebrew campaign, so summoned up this video for a refresher and inspiration. Thanks WebDM!

A guy in my current campaign is playing a vampire and it's been pretty great. Some of the traits got changed around a bit to keep him from being op but the spirit of it hasn't changed at all. He somehow managed to make the most edgy and hilariously dumb character possible. He didn't tell us he was a vampire but we all pieced it together within about 5 minutes of meeting his character (and it's not like our group is just good at learning each others secrets. They still dont know I'm a shapeshifter even though it's been a few months and they've met done of my alter egos). The guy always walks around with an umbrella so he can stay out of the sun. All of our characters have been openly planning methods of killing him in case he goes rogue. My character, who has a high intelligence but often struggles to understand simple concepts, is convinced that the best way to kill him would be to feed the vampire a steak that is coated in garlic. Hr once heard that a vampire is killed by a steak to the heart and assumes that means he needs to give the vampire a heart attack using a steak

why is the underdark not full of vampires

Awesome as always! This is another inspiration for my homebrew campaign. My roommate actually had the old AD&D module box for Ravenloft, such a good tool for those looking to get into grimdark settings.

we are playing the curse of strahd and you are right!!!! It's exhausting! I'm a paladin and my companions are a cleric and a fighter (archer). We just played 5 sessions and i feel like killing myself already. There is always something bad happening. Your companions get turn into werewolfs and terrorise the place you are trying to save. You cant get any equipment because the realm you are in is in control of a really powerfull vampire and he doesnt let you get swords or anything. And the worst is my friend tried to use Augury spell to get some answers about things 4 times now and we find out now that Strahd has been changing the results to make fun of us the hole time. We have 2 man of god in a 3 people party and the gods are not with us anymore!!! FUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

You could always use the mtg vampires. Look up plane-shift zendikar or plane-shift ixalan, they are free supplements made by wizards so there are play tested and everything.

In Pathfinder I made a twilight vampire using the crystal template,the diamond template and the vampire template. The crystal template provided immunity to light based attacks and made him sparkle . The diamond template gave him good AC and gave him temporary hit points that would refresh each morning and a keen scimitar of speed . He was also a doppleganger. Altho sparkly he was a bad ass .

Another amazing video! Definitely will be getting a lot of rewatches as I work on my new campaign world. The planet it takes place on is tilted and rotates in just the right way that part of the planet is always in the dark and much of the planet has very long nights so a lot of these kind of "Hide in the dark, monsters in the night" type of creatures...don't have to hide. They have entire countries where they don't have to fear the sun and I'm working on what exactly those cultures would be. How would people react when there's an entire country of Dhampirs? How many vampires would be ancient and stick to the old ways of enslaving and seducing mortals to feed on, and how many would be like "um...well that makes them hate us and kill us...why not just offer to buy some slaves from people that sell them, or have criminals sentenced to execution be sent to us or work with alchemists to make synthetic blood?" If there are any other settings like that I'd love to be pointed in their direction!

I always home brewer how pc vampirism works just tweaking the ups and downs but drinking blood is either required or very very needed for you to not get screwed and I love giving a paladin vampirism

Was working on homebrewing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer campaign with 5e rules and I realized one of the easiest ways to flesh it out was to use elements from Curse of Strahd and the Innistrahd campaign setting pdf, have a copy of Art of Magic the Gathering:Innistrad bookmarked to show players visuals, and crib the city building tools and set dressing from the upcoming Ebberron and Ravnica books for "modern" setting elements.

I have a vampire with an umbrella sword. The umbrella allows protection from the sun, but limits that hand and makes it difficult to see an aerial assault. Indoors or at night, the umbrella can be used as a second blunt weapon.

I have a player who was adamant about being a vampire, I talked him into being a half vampire and used the a few traits from the vampires in one of the MtG planeshift pdfs with a few tweeks (can't raise bodies) as a subrace (he chose elf dhampir in the end). It works quite nicely for balance, its basically like a drow but they need to feed on blood frequently. The other alternative was the revenant in the UA books was a similar feel of undead hero, you just make up some flair about the vampiric nature of it and bam, done.

People do not realise that the underdark is a place where it is expected the zombies and vampires show up and a cleric of a drow or duerro or dwarves is going to go out of their way to fight and seek out or lay a trap for such a creature the underdark is anti vampire as much as can possibly be this is why vampires are always above ground in a less competitive advantage with much more life to encounter.

My parents have a great story about a Ravenloft Campaign from when they were in university. I can’t recall all of the details right now... but man, it’s quite the tale.

I've always thought that the classic "Dark" creature templates should be converted into classes. 4e made vampire a class and well it needed some polish it was a good idea on how to implement the concept.

In the dark arts player compendium there's a sorc vampiric bloodline variant. If a player wants to be a vamp without unbalancing your game you can give them that as a newborn child of the night

My GM let me play a vampire and forgo the alignment change, she just wants to be cured (her whole reason to quest) and wants people to accept her...my group sold me to a slaver, and i think the slaver had a thing for my vampire

Hey, just a thought, shouldn’t vampires have age categories like Dragons? It’s pretty much always been a part of their mythology that they get more powerful with age. I would give them at least 4 age categories just like the dragon. Vampire Spawn wouldn’t progress past a certain point until they’re freed. Thoughts?

At least for 5e, I've seen a 5-level homebrew prestige class for becoming a vampire by a guy named Walrock (not warlock). I've not seen it played yet, so I'm unsure of the balance, but that could be an option for letting a PC become a vampire.

For anyone genuinely interested in playing a vampire, I really have to point towards the homebrew class on tribality. It needs a little cleaning up, but it's not bad at all.

When I ran the original module, after the part where Straud grabs a PC and polymorphs them into a copy of himself, that player blew me away by doing that very same thing to the poor cook that was in the castle. Now you have 3 Strauds to deal with.

I have a question and believe you guys may have the answer. I was a huge fan of Ravenloft (2nd Edition AD&D) in the early 90's and I had a Ravenloft adventure module that held maybe 10 or 15 stories within it. I believe it was designed so the first adventure was for beginning characters and as the stories progressed, so did the challenge. For whatever reason, I remember a passage in the book where I described an empty beach with bodies of.. I believe dead crabs littering it. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the name of that book and despite my Googling attempts, I have come up enpty handed. Is there any chance that you guys know which Ravenloft module I am talking about?

If I'm ever going to have vampires in my campaign, particularly if they're more of a central focus, I always break out my PDF copy of Van Richten's Guide to Vampires. In my eyes there is no better resource when it comes to using vampires in a campaign.

I style my vampires to follow inistrids(mtg) and have clans and such. I like the idea of the clans.

I think whenever someone comes with the proposition of doing a "Vampire PC", my first instinct would be to inquiry how integral the vampirism really is. Like, does the player have a really specific kind of character and story he wants to tell that would take advantage of being a vampire? If not, then there are good compromises one can go with. Like, maybe flavor a Shadow Magic Sorceror, whom already has the undeath, familiars and shadow-manipulation to do something vaguely vampiric with, but can be further flavored with choices of spells. Then just make a backstory note about your family having a history with vampirism or a specific vampire like Strahd awakening it in you individually and viola; A hand-crafted half-vampire. Similarly (although as much more of a stretch), you do a Warlock, flavoring a "Great Old One" to be a vampire. In both instances, talks of doing some homebrew abilities and weaknesses to be added on to flavor the idea can be discussed on a per-game basis.

I have been using my collection of Von Richten's Guides for many years (20+?). They are an awesome resource for all things undead, lycanthropes, constructs ect.

In my game players can be vampires, and they don't have to be evil. Vampires in my game sort of follow the Witcher series, in that they aren't evil, just different. They are well organized, sophisticated and even sometimes helpful, depending on how the players have treated them. Also Vampire players in my game level their character normally, but they gain vampire abilities over time as they feed on enemies or Innocents, as they play the game.

I’m kinda trying to get a plot hook going with one of my DMs to get my bard to hook up with a vampire. Mostly to help the one PC to get the girl.

This video reminds me of a one-shot my friend and I did where we were being a pair of private detectives where we were hunting a serial murderer/kidnapper who has been killing people in the night. We eventually tracked down a vampire who had snuck a ride on a ship from a neighboring kingdom. We didn't prepare whatso ever and we still managed to kill it with a crap tons of clouds of daggers and chromatic orbs, but we almost brought the entire church on us in the process

To my great misfortune, I've only ever had the opportunity to play in Ravenloft once, and it was a great number of years ago. With the introduction of 5th, and the general online presence being what it is nowadays, I find myself thirsty to go back!

what about a Vampire Paladin PC that is Neutral Evil (because vampire) set out for revenge to the person who is responsible for his current condition and the PC has the option to cure himself during the campaign or embrace the vampire (Vampire the Masquerade style). Progressively unlocks abilities with levels (doesn't have all vampire abilities from the start), weakness to holy and fire, during the day can't use any of the vampire abilities except drink blood from enemies for a % heal scaled by con and has penalties to rolls. In the night he can use the vampire abilities and gets bonus to rolls. Or he could be driven around in a coffin by his squire during the day (because sun is bad), so you get a double character sort of.

Are there half-vampires in 5th edition? There was one in 3.5

One way I'd do a vampire as a PC is maybe have it where the PC (if they are of a good nature) is they eat only once per month. They just get enough blood, to where they are at the level of a normal human being, any more and they start gaining power (i.e. draw closer to and leveling up). With adventuring come battles and opportunities to feed. Maybe have it where the vampire PC only gets to really level up the more often they feed by the month. Drawback of playing a vampire could be that, if by that point, when the PC doesn't feed often enough, they may drop a level? It could prove a good balancing mechanic so that the player doesn't become OP and overshadow the rest of the party. Now what would the wants of such a character vampire be? Well, if they're a good guy, maybe have a few options: 1)They are looking to rid themself of the curse = They were forced in it or tricked or what have you and now they don't want it. So they maybe travel with the party to find a way to get their humanity back. 2)They see their curse as a necessary evil to acomplish some task and so, travel in order to accomplish some goal, like revenge or complete a task that is nigh impossible? Slay some vile monstrocity that has ruined their lands? 3)Find a magical item that replenishes blood so that they can just survive on a daily basis, without having to feed off of people and/or animals. (Like one of those Alchemy jugs or a Blood stone) 4)Guard over someone much weaker than them, who is in need of constant protection from the forces of evil. 5)Monster Hunter, who was turned during a recent hunt and has decided to continue hunting, regardless of their condition. So much great rp and story potential here! If the PC is evil, there's tons of options, too many to list~!

I'm doing up a homebrew campaign setting, where one of the main locations of the world, which happens to be the entire surface world, is an ash desert. What do you guys think I could do with vampires? I was thinking they change to a dust devil type thing instead of mist, and less of the running water/stakes. Any ideas?

I seem to remember you talking about the woman who made the module seeing a vampire placed randomly in a dungeon and being surprised by how unceremoniously they were tossed around, and she thought it didn't suit vampire myth. I know this is 5e and not Pathfinder, but I found an adventure module called "Way of the Wicked" for Pathfinder. It had some interesting rules and methods of creating Lich or Vampire PCs in it, including new items and Feats a player can take for the "Transition" to either of those types. For 5e however, depending on the setting and current levels of the party, if the cirumstances lead up to a player becoming a vampire (willing or not), I would first have them turned into a Vampire Spawn, and not a full fledged vampire. Then depending how the situation played out (Whether the other PCs kill, cure them, or kill their master -- which would then turn them into a full fledged vampire as well according to the Monster Manual). So Yeah.... basically "Go with the Flow" lol

White Wolf's vampires did them justice, I think. And they get REALLY sinister.

Because Ravenloft is such a dark setting would you prefer to see it run with a more *savage* mechanic in terms of perhaps grievous wounds variant, just to really increase and emphasize the danger that's ever present? I'm about to start one up, and all my players are friends who have played together for a few years, but our current DM coddles the group a little bit too much for the purpose of the story... I want to immerse them in Ravenloft, what are your thoughts?

I've been trying to convince my DM to let me play a Vampire for years now, in both our main Campaign after my first character died and in a new campaign all together, but he refuses. He's stuck in 3.5, the struggle guys. 5e would be so much more fun to play a Vampire. There's a sense of balance that previous editions didn't have. Hopefully we'll get an official Vampire race option soon for PC's. It needs to have the disadvantages that come with Vampires, but it also needs to have some of the benefits that only Vampires hold.

I have a guy who wants to be a vampire for a curse of Strahd campaign and I'm thinking of letting him just cause it's gonna be interesting and won't give him nearly as many benefits as he thinks. Idk tho

Just finished a dungeon too difficult for me to handle but many lucky throws got me alive to the end with 2 other members of my party (we are 6. The others were knocked out). What's at the end of it? Strahd. What do i do since i do not know who he is and i dont know how vampires work? I ask him to turn me. Persuasion +6 for me. Nat 20. He turns me. DM finishes the session there. Now i know who he is and how vampires work. Maybe i shouldn't have asked him.

My party almost had a tpk, my character the only one surviving, against two vampires who were a lich' servants. We got totally crushed and my Fighter ran away, begrudgingly leaving his friends to die and swearing revenge. We enlist the help of a faction who fights against evil creatures as well as a tribe of orcs and ogres whose leader was kidnapped by the vampires. The new party members were members of the monster hunter faction and a Druid from the tribe of ogres who was a dragon born. The leader of the faction, however, gave my character a rune that, when attacked to a weapon, added an additional +1 to attack and damage and deals 1d4 extra radiant damage per hit. This was put into a +2 sword of a fallen ally who died fighting the lich earlier whose, my character vowed, would be that to kill the witch. My character is now in the middle of the siege as a level 8 with what is essentially a legendary rarity sword that one-shots a bunch of CR 3 monsters with one attack action (2 attacks).

I made an any alignment vampire race based on the author Terry Pratchett’s “Black Ribbon” practice, they still require blood but it can be animal or freely donated human, as the blood is not forcibly taken the dark magic it would have is not so potent and as such the race is weaker than the monster Vampire, having all the drawbacks and fewer of the advantages, if a player went of script and started to suck the life from people they had to make a Charisma save DC 15 increasing by 5 each time, if passed they stayed as they are if fails they became a true Vamp but the DM sized control of the character.
