I love Asian restaurants because as a vegan it's so easy. They treat tofu like chicken or beef as an option, not like some weird ingredient, and there's never dairy in things to worry about.

Zom Pat that’s because of most asian restaurants in western countries have been adjusted to the western taste buds. If you were to order simple blanched/steamed veggies and ask them to make it vegetarian version, if it’s supposed to have oyster sauce they’d use the vegetarian version of oyster sauce that’s made from shiitake mushroom. Most asian cuisine revolve around buddhism that don’t eat animal products so by asking for vegetarian version you’d automatically will get buddhist vegetarian dish that contains no animal products, onions, garlic and allium.

rusclemania7 7 same goes for me. I was super miserable when lactating/breastfeeding as i gotta make sure my babies drink my milk. But it was only for a period of 6 months for each baby so that was tolerable.

Just because I recently learned this in medschool: Our body needs iodine to create the thyroid hormone, which is quite essential and gets distributed to almost every cell. An iodine deficiency can lead to not only a swelling of the thyroid but also to brain damage and developmental defects. So it's pretty important. :) Nerd out.

Good point, Dr Greger made a useful video on the different iodine levels in different seaweeds. He also gives advice on which seaweed has too high iodine levels for regular use, and which ones can be used more often.

This is why iodized salt came into being. Before salt was iodized many people, especially in the midwest in the USA, came down with goiter. They did not get iodine in their diet because they did not live close to the ocean where iodine is naturally in the seafood.

Okay so à) canned bamboo shoots are great for fillings and add an Unami flavour b) pick your soy sauces wisely, light soy is saltier so good for creating a seafood taste in tofu where dark is richer and more Unami so good for meaty taste, use sparingly. C) Dried vermicelli noodles are great for fillings, I use the sheets instead of the nests d) dried shittake mushrooms, they are long life and are great for adding Unami, you the water used to rehydrate them in a or as a stock!

Thanks to watching you, and Mommy Tang, gochu-jang; gochu-garu; and sesame seeds (I like the seeds more than the oil, though I use a little of it too), are now staples in my kitchen. I also like to have rice vinegar, and miso on hand. I always have either soy sauce, or liquid aminos, around.

Hey Rose! Just wanted to mention that not only does Gochujang come in various tub sizes, but in heat index as well. When I went to the Asian store, they were out of the mild, but the clerk told me to get medium and that I would be able to handle it. it's definitely got a "kick" to it but I loveeee it!!! Also, I have many of the items you mentioned. In addition, I keep a pink Himalayan salt grinder on hand as well. Thanks for all the wonderful tips. Hope you're having a fabulous Sunday! xo P.S. Your hair looks amazing!!😘🙆🐕🔥

Soya sauce - Check Gochujang - Check Gochugaru - Check Sesame oil - Check (I actually get the one that's half sesame half soybean oil because it's cheaper) Also I use mine to cook my veggies for stir fry and it adds the flavour. Sesame seeds - Check (I have raw and I toast them myself if I want) Rice Vinegar - check Konbu - Check (Bought it for vegan dashi) Kelp powder - NOPE (I will be buying it on iHerb when I move to Japan) Soybean Paste - NOPE (not needed it for any recipes so far) Miso - Check Hoisin Sauce - NOPE (but I love it) Thai curry paste - NOPE (I needed it once but I couldn't find it in my whole city, so I used a modified gochujang - with curry powder and sesame oil - as a replacement LOL) Coconut Milk - Check (they sell it at the dollar store here) Can you tell I cook a lot of Asian foods? My spice shelf looks like I make a lot of Indian food, my fridge is like Korean/Japanese lol.

They're not even called curry in Thailand, that's just the term used in the West because of colonialism. Curry, the anglicized version of the Tamil word "kari," is technically and specifically only correct when used in reference to South Indian dishes. The Thai word for most of the "curries" is different, in Thailand the term curry is used mainly for "India" inspired dishes. Thank you for this video, I was super curious about the difference between miso and dien jang!

That was inspirational :) I am Polish living currently in the UK and I have plenty of Asian stores around me. Obviously I'm a newbee comparing to you when it comes to Asian food but I do love it and there are a couple of items I always need to have: soy sauce (I use Kikkoman low sodium), miso paste (which is already pretty strong for me!), different kinds of seaweed (wakame and nori atm), different curry pastes, coconut milk. I love miso soup, ramen, sushi, thai curries. I definitely want to give this chilli paste a try, I should also stock my kitchen with sesame oil and rice vinegar.

You must have read my mind. I was wanting you to make a video showing some basic Asian ingredients! So I noticed you didn't have any Chinese five-spice powder, which is something I often add to stir-fries. I learned about it from a girl I shared a kitchen with years ago when I was in college. She was from Taiwan. I agree with you about sesame oil! To me, it almost adds a "meaty" taste and smell--something vegans might or might not want. And I really love seaweed. The curry pastes are kinda new to me, and I really want to try the gochujang. Oh, and about soy sauce and gluten free diet, I think it helps to avoid "caramel coloring" in the ingredient list if you're trying to avoid gluten. And of course you want to avoid soy sauce that is made with wheat. It's a good idea to read labels whatever because there is sometimes a little fish sauce in soy sauce. Bragg's liquid aminos is a nice alternative, but it's kinda pricey. Thanks for another helpful video! I always like your videos.

Please, please, please a few more recipes using Doenjang - I have a big jar and don't know what to do with it :) My favorite Far-East cuisine staples (currently in my pantry) are: Gochugaru, Gochujang, kim (especially the snacking kind!), toasted sesame oil (must be toasted or it doesn't taste like anything!), fresh tofu, perilla, natto, white miso, Black vinegar, broadbean paste, chili oil, hoisin sauce, fermented black beans, Sichuan pepper, vegetarian oyster sauce (for dipping and stirfry), toasted sesame seed, sweet rice flour, wakame, nori sheet shreds, salted ume plums and way too much soy sauce.
