I have 2 seniors that are on this food. My 13 yr old sheltie switched 6 months ago and my 10 yr old Olde English Bulldogge has switched this week (she was on Wellness senior) Both dogs did awesome with the switch and im very happy with this food. I use Chewy's nutritional info (their team is amazing) and always ask for dry matter basis. The 2018 question was asked for calcium dmb with 0.79% being the answer. So, today, i was thankful for the updated answer even though the percentage was higher. The protein and the phosphorus % is great and i will continue to feed this to my seniors. 9 out of 10 ain't bad! Thanks for educating your viewers, I love learning more about this subject!

Thank you for this informative video. There seem to be a new and prevailing opinion that as long as kidney values are ok, we don’t need to lower protein. Both my vet and my dog nutritionist insisted that we don’t need to change my 15 year old senior’s diet. Even though her kidney values were normal, she started peeing randomly in the house (it never happened before). I can’t help but relate it to the high protein diet she was on at that time. It’s kind of comical how “holistic” vets are all about prevention, but are very stubborn on this particular issue.

You are welcome. I am not aware of a new prevailing opinion regarding protein for seniors outside of what I’ve outlined in this video. Current and well established veterinary practice recommendation is that a low to moderate protein is appropriate for seniors as well as patients with renal insufficiency as outlined in the linked text.

You are way too smart to be as young as you appear. ❤ a groomer had recommended a $$$$$ high-protein dog food for my older dog. I felt like he had gotten worse. This makes sense. Edit. Just bought Hills Sr vitality for 13yo mix Japanese chin rescue and Royal Canin small for the 4yo f mix Shih Tzus 🐾

I just bought this for my 7-8 year dog. I was had just started feeding him earthborn smoked salmon and saw your review. I'd planned on finishing out the bag but he got red "hives/pimples" all over his butt, back and neck. Something in it wasn't for him in more ways than nutrition. He's been on this for 2 weeks and is already itchy much less. Thank you for all your work and time

16:25 - Rob Shaul from Mountain Tactical Institute wrote a blog post about being a 45+ yrars old athlete. He said when you get older, the protein sources need to be more easily digestible. More is not better if your body can't utlitize it. But most of the protein powders on the market are for young men in their 20s. Think he found a Costco brabd that's highly metabolizable.

If I recall correctly of protein is not designed to be easily utilized, body just convert that to energy and you start gaining body fat instead of muscle mass

Hello Dr Rea, thank you for this informative video! I actually feed my 7.5 year-old Cocker Spaniel the Science Diet Adult 7+ Perfect Digestion Chicken, Whole Oats & Brown Rice Recipe Dog Food. I chose this particular recipe because it is the one that has the lowest Calcium level (of all their senior diets shown on the Hill’s website) compared to the one-above which you have just evaluated. Here are the nutrients levels for the recipe that I give my dog: Protein: 21 % - Fat: 13 % - Calcium: 0.92 % - Phosphorus: 0.65 % So, although the Calcium level is lower in this recipe at 0.92%, it is still far from the 0.75% maximum that shows on your chart. I am disappointed to see this difference and puzzled as to wonder that If I cannot trust SD to be the best choice for my dog’s wellbeing, then what else is there out there??? I have watched each and every one of your food evaluations right from the beginning of your channel, and I have been under the impression that SD was the best-balanced nutrition for my dog. It seems that only their Prescription Diets are within the same levels as your chart, so does that mean that I should only buy the Prescription Diets which are only available at vet clinics??? Now I feel bad that I'm giving too much calcium to my boy! I don't know what to think anymore! Please help! 🐶🐾

Please remember that it’s not always possible to be absolutely perfect in every parameter it’s about getting as close as possible as a whole. That’s why I always say if it’s a 7 or above you are good. You are doing an awesome job and thank you for sharing this formula that is even better!

@AnimalDocRea this hits on something that has been on my mind. It seems that there are primarily 3 main pet food companies that hit the small animal clinical nutrition #'s regularly. But, what about the formula's those same companies produce that are out of range? Maybe they have more recent "proprietary" research thats does not exactly line up with the small animal clinical nutrition #'s? Are the small animal clinical nutrition #'s outdated? Just some thoughts. It's like we put our trust in a company but then as these "reviews / deep dives" go into things it makes us second guess those same companies. Thanks for taking your time to make these great video's and keep the discussion going!

As Dr. Rea pointed out, processing meats is expensive, and as Glenn from Pet Food Puzzle Guy stated usually the highest qualities cuts of meats are prioritized for cat food production. Now that being said, Royal Canin do produce their own open-access research why their dietary approach differ from Hill's. The PDFs are easy to find

These companies diversify their portfolio to give the consumer wider choices across price points and other interests. Not everyone seeks the same thing in what they choose to feed for different reasons so good business dictates you give the consumer what they want. wether it’s “ more meat” or cheaper price, pretty pictures, ect. Just look at the nutrisource line, ridiculous variety but they try to capture the largest audience possible

4:23 - Purina ProPlan is easier to find than Hill's Science Diet. We hace a much wider selection of Royal Canin than either brands. If i recall correctlly, Orijen and Acana Senior are just their adult dog food formulations but with a more digestible kibble shape

We had to put our 12 year old Coton on Pro Plan's Sensitive Skin & Stomach, Salmon formula to straighten out a food allergy. It worked/is working great. Because of its protien/calcium/phosphorus levels, we now worry that particular kibble is not as appropriate as it should be for her age. She is allergic to chicken/beef. Can you recommend a senior kibble that fulfills the protien/calcium/phosphorus levels for senior dogs, that is fish-based? Thank you.

Is this fine for large breeds, like a 9yr old fairly active GSD? This is a very timely video for me as I just bought a small bag of this today after watching some of the videos by the Pet Food Puzzle Guy. I also am trying the Perfect Weight for small breeds for my Chihuahua as he has a couple of lbs to lose. I'm so curious if it will work and how my dogs will do overall on this brand. I've been opposed to Hills for years because of the negative opinions in the ingredients and whatnot, but am starting to rethink the whole pet food industry and the marketing, etc. Looking forward to watching your videos!! Please review dog food brand 'Just Food For Dogs'. They do a 12 mo feeding trial on all their frozen/fresh foods. I'm using their Lamb/Brown Rice food as this is for older dogs. Thank you, Peter Pappas

It would depend on my pets underlying condition if any. My pet being normal and no other factors to consider, yes.

Dr. Rae, I recently discovered your channel and can't thank you enough for providing such great content. After watching your videos I realize that I was feeding my pets all wrong. They were getting no grain and way too much protein. The search for new dog food has began. I have a 9 year old and a 1-year-old Treeing Walker Coonhounds. They have always been fed the correct life stage food for large dogs. But, since I've started looking at food I have found that very few meet the requirements for senior dogs. Actually, I've only found one. Hill's Science Diet Adult (Large Breed) Dry Dog Food. I feel this is a question you've covered many times but I want to be sure. A food doesn't have to say senior food as long as the nutritional requirements are correct. Is this correct? Or is there some other component to senior food that I should be taking into consideration? If not that's fantastic! I would love for them both to be on the same food but more importantly I want them to be as healthy as possible for as long as possible.

Apparently some senior formulas are souped up with joint supporting supplements etc. Hopefully AnimalDocRea will chime in....

Yes that is a common additive to senior diets. You could easily do an outside supplement and to be honest, I think joint supplements should be in younger food vs senior because they do no good to add once the arthritis is present, you need it before unless its at the levels of prescription diet like j/d

I’m sorry, with any medical condition it’s super important you make diet changes in conversation with your veterinarian, therefore it would be inappropriate for me to suggest any diet change

Dr. Rae, are “fresh made dog foods” such as Farmers dog better than a high quality kibble?

I’ve got reviews on farmers dog, Ollie, and evermore. It depends on the final nutrient level so some are and some are not. Fresh foods are not by default better and many are honestly just in it to get sales as this is a new popular trend so the nutrients are way off and are actually worse than most kibble.

My dog is on science diet sensitive stomach large breed. At 7 dodo I need to switch him to senior Science diet or can he stay on Current food. Is there a big difference in either. Warren

You have to compare it to the senior standards. What the food is called is honestly irrelevant.

My 8year old Lab hated this food, in fact after following directions it made her sick when she did finally eat it. Can you review some other senior foods. Nutro senior Lamb and rice its low kal, low protein, low fat, non-GMO and human grade food. Please.
