I think that's part of the problem. You went to go see KZfaqrs who were able to build a whole community off of their media and that is what made the previous Vidcons a fun experience for those who were really into KZfaq culture. Fast forward to now and it's about Tiktok and no offense but TikTok videos are so short that you can't really build a huge fanbase an connection around an individual (or small group) like you could with KZfaq because of the nature of the videos being a few seconds. It was silly of the execs to think that having Vidcon be about TikTokers wasn't gonna do as well compared to the KZfaqrs lol.

this is all I kept thinking!! People could have chosen to wear masks if they wanted to. In my country its no longer mandatory but you won't catch me without it in small spaces or places with a lot of people. We can still choose for ourselves to take precautions. I don't know how people trust that everyone around them is healthy and have been careful about getting sick.

It is not mandatory in airports and planes anymore but I still wear a mask much as possible.

Well like someone else mentioned, another thing that possibly affected the "dead" vibe of Vidcon was that it was mostly consisting of TikTokers and unlike KZfaqrs where you're able to get a big read and feel for the person you're watching because of the longer-form content, TikTok people you only see for a few seconds in a video and so their viewers don't feel that connection the way that people felt about KZfaqrs so it all made for a rather underwhelming atmosphere. At least with things like Comic Con, Star Wars con, etc You have that media property that all the con goers will have in common with each other so you get to hang out with likeminded people while also getting to meet people who work on the media that you enjoy which makes the experience all the more exciting and fun. I mean with Tiktokers at Vidcon, what can you really talk about? lol.

mask mandate in california is only in certain counties. as far as i'm aware alameda county has a mandate but I haven't heard of any mask mandates in LA (i live in the bay area with no mask mandate, unfortunately)

ikr like from what i’ve seen a decent chunk of people that attended vidcon went to see the mcyt’s. ranboo stayed a whole two extra hours at his meet and greet so he could see everyone (he ended up seeing around 1200-1500 people) and most of the people in the audience at the panel before the dsmp panel were only there to get good seats for the dsmp panel. tbh vidcon this year was half a tiktok event and half a mcyt and mc streamer event

It's mainly because KZfaq's algorithms are so inconsistent these days and it's what driving some YT creators away, mostly to Twitch it seems. If they can fix that issue, I'm sure we'll see a KZfaq revival.

As someone who is not really into KZfaq culture but was an observer of it, yeah they were doomed from the start for not involving more KZfaqrs. TikTok may be big but the content is really shallow at it's core. The vids are only a couple seconds and usually it's people either dancing or miming to preexisting media properties. Compare that to KZfaqrs who put a lot more work into their content from developing character personalities with scripts and/or doing things like long-running skits or even just creating things while interacting with their audience. A place like Vidcon makes more sense for KZfaqrs than it does for TikTokers. Like even if they did make a separate event for TikTok only, it would still have that "dead" feeling I bet.

I got a false positive. They are extremely rare but do occur.
