Hi guys, in today's video I'll talk about a new adapter for Canon EF lenses in combination with the first generation of Lumix S cameras (Lumix S1/S5/S1H/S1R). This adapter from Viltrox seems like a good option if you own, or if you plan to buy, Canon EF lenses that have cpu contacts. I think that this adapter will work pretty well if you're a portrait or landscape photographer, because the combination of autofocus and weather sealing can make your life easier.

Hi and thank you for this very interesting video! Do you have the O/A switch on your adapter? Have you tested it? If I have understood correctly, the adapter with the switch put to O means, no firmware and direct communication between lens and camera. My question is - can this be dangerous for the lens or the camera if signals don't fit together? Otherwise it could be possible to use other lenses, not mentioned by Viltrox with this direct communication. Thanks

Man, I was looking through so many videos for adapters but for some reason, THIS, which is exactly what I was looking for never showed up in the search results, only in recommendations later on... 🤦 Anyway, thanks a bunch! It's weird and good to know that even the native lens can completely lose focus sometimes. Although... I guess it might've been because you fully turned around and so the camera didn't have you as "locked on" any more.

With the GH5 there’s a setting to use without a lens. I don’t see this in my S1’s menu. Maybe it’s Panasonic’s fault certain lenses don’t work.

Great video! I have the option to buy an adapter without electronic contactpoints for €40 (from Urth), or this one with electronic contactpoints for €160 while the AF doesn't work correctly with my S5. Given that the AF doesn't work, would you say there are any other benefits for using the more expensive adapter, such as stabilisation, or should I just go with the €40 manual one while shooting everything manual? I plan on using the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens. Thanks!

I can confirm that with S5ii, the autofocus works fantastic. Lenses I’ve tested are the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and Sigma 17-70 2.8 - 4.0. Both lenses work great. I mean, don’t compare it natively lenses but definitely more than usable.

Thank you! I think it should work, because the lens has CPU contacts. Maybe check with the customer service of Viltrox, to be 100% sure. Cheers!

Based on what I've read, it looks like either they or Panasonic have cut AFC support. Which I think is unfortunate because even if it doesn't work well, at least you could try it out. Same as with not being able to use aps-c lenses uncropped. There are plenty of aps-c zoom lenses that would work fine when zoomed in a bit... I'm not sure whether companies preemptively spoil things or whether incapable users whine too much. 😅

What happens when you switch the adapter mode with the switch on the side, O/A mode switching enables camera to recognize unit as a lens or adapter ring. Does this allow it to use with manual lenses?

damn @panasonic send this man the s5ii already!!! if you put some electric tap on the electronic connection? 100% manual glass should work right? super weird as have a locking mencanism is mostly so that you can have these heavy cine glass which are mostly manual ;)

Ahahah, thanks mate! Honestly I didn't try to use electric tape because an adapter that costs 200$ should work without workarounds. 🫢 And don't forget that if a piece of tape will end up on the shutter mechanism, you can say goodbye to your camera 😅

@@LucaBono.Studio true true hahaha. I used it once but it was the og pocket so no shutter ;) the viltrox speedbooster tp ef adapter was going crazy there with manual lens but was working okay on newer p4k n g85 bodies lol.

Hi! I've used the standard AF settings. The problem is the high DOF with DFD AF, it's not really about the AF settings. Cheers!

I wanted to purchase 1 for me because the locking adapter, unfortunately it doesn't work with manual lenses (which i have only manual lenses). It is pretty bad news. Do you have some other adapter suggestion with locking adapter for EFS to L mount? Thanks

Yes, it is very sad that this adapter doesn't work with passive lenses. I can't find any other EF to L-Mount adapter, with the locking system...sorry

Hellow Luca, so i have an issue with aputure control. As of now i own a Sigma MC21 for S1H Body. The adapter would sometimes read or set the aputure value incorectly to the lens.. its like when im rotating the dial so it becomes f1.8.. i have to double check to see through the front of the lens to see if its wide open or not.. sometimes even if its f1.8 its not entirely open so i had to shoot a higher ISO during a wedding moment because the aputure wouldnt open. It freakin annoys me! Could u demonstrate or tell me if this adapter had this same issue with aputure control.. i dont shoot wide open all that time.. Sometimes i even shoot at f7 and i suspect that adapters couldnt set the aputure number as precise as it should be.. is it correct? or is it just the sigma MC21 issue?

I think the problem is coming from the cpu contacts...did you try to clean them on the lens and on the adapter?

@@LucaBono.Studio I recently got the S1 (thanks to you haha) and i'm thinking getting a native lens. I already have distagon 35mm ZE, do you think it's a good idea to trade the zeiss with the lumix S 35/50mm? is the native AF worth it? I mainly use it for video.. appreciate for the reply!

I just got the Lumix 35mm f1.8 because I needed a lighter lens for some corporates jobs I've to do abroad (the weight limit on the airplane is a thing). The image quality of the Lumix is pretty good, but the AF and MF experience is not there. It's ok for interviews in MF or for photography and that's it. I'll probably sell it soon. Stick with the Zeiss ✌🏻

The AF in video is bad with fast native and adapted lenses on the first generation of Lumix S cameras. That's why I only film in manual focus. Cheers!

Only the S1H doesn't suffer from moire in apsc mode, because of the olpf
