Askeladd is stuck. He needs to choose between saving Canute or saving Wales! Sweyn is telling him he'll leave his country alone if he betrays Canute, so what does he do? He sacrifices himself to create a third choice and save both!! In doing so, he literally becomes the great Artorius of his mother's legend D: But he also leaves Thorfinn stuck between feelings with unfinished business and what we fear is an empty heart...

I like Askelladd's line about "don't stay in a place like this", because even though he kind of accomplished his goals. He lost his way and ended up dying the only way he thought he would in a violent vengeful way. He was stuck in a "place like this" until the end.

This episode is so good! I love Askeladd last words, how he's spitting wisdom in his deathbed. I'm reaaally looking forward to your reaction to season 2! I also hope you will sing the openings then too :D

The 3 unknown characters at the end are VERY important to Thorfinn's future, but saying anymore will be spoilers. They are very relevant later on.

When Thorfinn was pleading with Askellad "hey, baldie, don't sleep there, we need to run away", it was heartbreaking. I'm actually very curious what would've happened if theoretically Askellad wasn't mortally wounded and in such closed space, so they would be able to get away. Would two of them just continue to live together somewhere in Wales, repeating same cycle of duels, until Askellad dies of old age? Seeing how Thorfinn reacted here makes me think that even if he managed to seriously injure Askellad in one of those fights, he probably would've freaked out immediately and backtrack.

There definitely is a father figure element to Askelladd but I think he serves more as a warning of what Thorfinn could become once he got his revenge (which has now been taken from him). I think Askelladd and Thorfinn have a somewhat similar dynamic to Jesse and Walter, Askelladd was willing to manipulate and maybe even sacrifice Thorfinn for his plans with Canute, but he did have some feelings for him and hoped that he would be better than him. While at the same time he was the reason Thorfinn is so emotionally stunted in the first place. It's definitely not a black and white dynamic, it's very grey.

I recommend giving the song "Jórvik" by Hulkoff a listen. Hulkoffs music is quite fitting for Vinland saga in general but that sobg is about raiding with Canute in particular

impossible to feel bad for a guy like Askeladd who spent all his time hurting not only those who in one way or another appreciated him but what the guy represents is someone who is hypocritical, calculating, manipulative, xenophobic, cruel, someone who is willing do whatever it takes to achieve his goal I cried but for thorfinn I know that Askeladd's final speech is supposed to be inspiring and epic but if you stop and think about it, it is a speech that comes from the man who not only killed your father and mocked his memory on several occasions but also the guy who led you to live that horrible life Thorfinn is trapped in

That is weird because most reactors cried and were completely gutted when Askeladd died so maybe there is something weird with you :) You pretend as if Thorfinn is not a cruel killer, a rough childhood is your excuse? I think Askeladd had it tough too.

Thors & thorkell have killed more people than askeladd ever could. The whole point of the show is redemption, people change. Askeladd's childhood was tougher than Thorfinn's. Also, what if thorfinn wasnt the simple minded silent maniac but had actual viking ideologies. Askeladd doesn't hate Thorfinn in anyway. Also, its said in the show, "death perfects a person" "in their last moments, people show you who they really are" and you still hate the guy? You must have seen season 2. If thorfinn himself dossnt hate askeladd anymore, why do you? You know his backstory. He's the product of his circumstances. He fights fire with fire. Kid & teenage askeladd was kinder than present Thorfinn in every way. Hates warriors & the brutality of violence yet does it himself hence a hypocrite. His dad's blood in him makes him feel a viking monster even before he was. Tragic. His mom's royal blood is his good, heroic side. Disagree with your last line. Thorfinn is trapped in that life because of himself, not askeladd.
