I've had a MiSTer for 2 years and it's the best retro game purchase I've ever made. Yes, it's relatively expensive, but like you said, I've spent thousands on consoles, video mods, SCART cables, flash carts, optical drive emulators, scalers (a Framemeister, then a Retrotink 2X-Pro, then a 5X), switches, controllers, peripherals like light guns and the SNES mouse...it adds up fast. The MiSTer more or less obsoleted all of them at a lower price and much smaller footprint. Never mind all the peripherals (Super Scope, Famicom Disk System), consoles (Neo Geo, Turbografx), arcade cabs and retro PCs that were too expensive, space-consuming, or just weren't worth the money for 1-2 games.

I’ve owned a Mister now for a few months and I can say it is the best way to game if your a Retro gamer. I sold all of my old systems and am now just enjoying the games I love without EBay fees, gamepass fees, and BS/crap Virtual console Services. Also, as you mentioned, my input is lag less which can be felt by retro gamers that grew up playing these games in the Arcade and consoles with CRT tvs.

Great review, and I enjoyed the lag comparison. A pro you overlooked was the active developer scene, console cores are often updated and arcade cores continue to be released. The one con you overlooked was a lack of save states. But, on the other hand there are cheats for most games in the menu, but still, save states would help a lot for various reasons.

I had it for a year now. I have to warn that if you are into computers, some cores, like the MacPlus seem abandoned and have some bugs sadly, but the ones I use like the Amiga and AO486 (a 486-SX 33MHZ) are very good. I don't regret my purchase, but do a research before buying to check if what you are interested in is well supported. Overall, this is a truly amazing machine!

For anyone on the fence because of the rising costs of parts, I feel your pain. If it's too much money it's too much- although it is definitely a great value when you add up all the hardware and scalers it can replace. One thing to consider if you ARE on the fence but can afford it- about 99.9% of MiSTer owners will tell you it's the best retro gaming purchase they've ever made, and I think that says something :)

@@PurpleRupees bro I just checked misteraddons and I didn’t know they sold out, I bought mine maybe 2 months ago. This is definitely worth the money though… I’m using my girlfriends commodore 1702 and have the MiSTer hooked to both the 1702 through VGA and to my EVGA XR1 Pro capture card through HDMI which is hooked to my PC for streaming. I have to say when you get a chance to buy a MiSTer it’s 100% worth it! Unfortunately N64 wont be feasible on Mister because there isn't enough room on the FPGA chip. I believe the playstation and sega saturn cores are using almost the whole FPGA, and N64 would require quite a bit more apparently. 4:09 this is where you'd fit the tape input accessory, for reading tapes with apps and games for the C64 and similar cores that supported loading from cassette tapes. This is only useful if you have software stored in this format and wants to load directly from it, instead of converting to a more convenient digital format and save on the SD card. 30:48 It does have an OS, it runs Linux on the HPS (dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 @ 800MHz), it's just targeted at embedded systems, not desktop or servers. The default user is root and password is 1 (probably a good idea to change this), you can connect using SSH or SFTP, you can also access the command line by pressing F9 on the initial menu or by plugging it to your computer with a type A to mini B USB cable on the console port. If you're already familiar with Linux on regular computers, you'll just have to adapt to it using busybox instead of gnu tools. If you already messed with embedded Linux or Android devices, you will feel right at home.

From what experienced MVS players told me, this is a flawless replica of the original hardware. I don't personally know anyone that has/had an AES to compare. But considering how this core was developed, taking die shots from original chips and reverse engineering the entire integrated circuits, it's probably one of the most accurate cores out there, if not the most. You might have some issues with some ROM dumps not loading, depending on the format they're in. But if you use the proper conversion tool or load the right memory way in the romset.xml, it will load just fine. There are sample XML files for romsets you can buy on places like Good Old Games also.

@@gcolombelli I have a japanese AES and in my experience, an AES is just a little bit brighter through RGB Scart compared to MiSTer (VGA to Component), but this is the only thing I can say. The image is the same, the response time and mostly the sound. Sometimes I forget that I'm playing on MiSTer and not on the consoles (and more if I'm playing on the CRT). I remember one day that I was playing Big Tournament Golf and I say "there is more sound effects on the console", then I checked on the MiSTer core that I have Stereo Sound off, that's why I say that by the only difference seeing is with the brightness, just a little bit more bright. For anything else, is the same. If you have plans on getting one, go for it. Believe me that you will not regret it!! Is a gift from heaven!!

I’ve had the MiSTer for a couple of years too and it’s great. The key for me was no input lag and RGB output to play on an old TV, that’s what brings the memories back. However, to be completely honest, I also have a Pi 400 with RGB-Pi and their SCART cable and sometimes I cannot distinguish between them, so I would suggest that much cheaper alternative to those who want to do retro gaming and be 98% there without breaking the bank. I mean, the MiSTer is nice but it has become more expensive than the Steam Deck, which is somehow ridiculous.

I don't know that there is a lot of data available for the Polymega as far as input latency goes. I've heard it's good for being software emulation though. Still can't seem to get a straight answer for this, but does using MiSTer's HDMI port add any additional latency? Some Say 1 frame(16ms), some say you can adjust it to get it even lower, or there's some people saying it actually adds 1-3 frames of lag. Not interested in sticking with CRT anymore. I want to get a smaller 43" QD-LED (Samsung QN90D - 2024) and pair it with a MiSTer. Or worst case scenario, FPGA consoles with EverDrives.

it depends, on the TV brand and cable quality nothing will beat the latency of a CRT, modern TVs will always have some input lag to them

@@VKsChannel On average, seems like modern QD-OLED & LED TV's have around 10ms of lag at 60fps. For me, that's already enough latency, combined with a low latency controller.

For anyone who insists we call this “emulation,” it is, but only in the sense that any hardware clone “emulates” the original. It’s a hardware clone in every sense. People assume otherwise because an FPGA can be updated, but that’s just the “Field Programmable” part of “Field Programmable Gate Array” (FPGA). The “Gate Array” is the same hardware you will find in almost any hardware clone. The permanent chips inside a fixed hardware clone are typically ASIC chips. These ASICs are a similar kind of chip offered to chip designers with the same “array” of generic logic elements (LEs), only the logic gate connections are permanently configured at the factory using a lithography mask instead of being reconfigurable out in the “field.” It’s similar to the difference between a maskROM and an EEPROM… only this is for hardware logic and not software. Indeed, the original chips that are being cloned are often designed as ASICs in the first place, and even when they aren’t they are often replaced with ASICs in later revisions. The later Genesis/Mega Drive, 1chip Super NES, and ASIC Game Gear come to mind. So, yeah, an FPGA clone is a hardware clone that interprets the software natively. Just because you can update an FPGA doesn’t make it any less “hardware.” Indeed, the original chips they are cloning were often designed with a Hardware Descriptor Language like Verilog or VHDL. The original HDL can be ported to an fixed ASIC or a reprogrammable FPGA… and vice-versa. It can also be reverse-engineered to make officially compatible hardware, like the 1chip SNES/SFC. That ASIC design was even leaked and is still in use today in all the various Super NES hardware clones.

No one goes out of their way to refer to NES-On-A-Chip (NOAC) clones as “emulation,” so why are people bending over backwards to do that for FPGA? Some genuinely don’t know that FPGA is hardware cloning, some have a chip on their shoulder because they think the distinction is an insult to software emulation, and others because they are annoyed at marketing attempts to distinguish FPGA as “perfect.” Personally, I think “hardware clone” tells people all they need to know, since clones are not guaranteed to be a 100% accurate replication but they have to be accurate enough to run general code natively, without translation/interpretation from a software emulator. Just calling a spade and spade.

@@VKsChannel Thanks. RetroScaler’s name comes from the RetroScaler 2X, which was a shameless clone of Mike Chi’s RetroTink 2X. While it had a different layout it presumably stole Mike Chi’s microcontroller code. I never saw confirmation of this but it seems likely since it operates exactly the same, which probably wouldn’t be the case if he had created it from the ground up according to the component data sheets. RetroScaler is also known as “BitFunx.” He is notorious for taking open source projects and selling them without giving back. Indeed, he has shamelessly copied materials from other vendors of the same products while trying to fob support for his products onto them, such as when he made his own Open Source Scan Converter. Though it was an open source project he included a copy of VideogamePerfection’s manual complete with their support links and OSSC logo (NOT part of the open source project). He even copied their remote control overlay and included that, which was VGP’s original product. He agreed to remove the logos and manual after all this was pointed out, so I could forgive him if that was all there was… but it wasn’t. He’s also wrongly criticized for cloning the DCHDMI/DCDigital, but that was an open source project too. The creators were disappointed that he didn’t give anything back to the project but he wasn’t technically doing anything wrong there. Still, it frustrated the creators enough that they started commercializing their future products without open sourcing them, like PS1Digital and now everything done as PixelFX. …but BitFunx was still misbehaving. He stole the GCLoader name and design for a SD2SPI device that loads games from SD card when combined with any another method for running homebrew on the GameCube. The real deal GCLoader is an ODE (Optical Drive Emulator) that can load games without any other mods. The kicker here is that you don’t need any physical modification of the GameCube to run an SD2SPI device since there are external adapters, so he copied the name and internal installation method purely to convince people it was something it wasn’t. It isn’t a real ODE. Another issue is with his products based on Ingo Korb’s open source GCVideo. He has removed Ingo Korb’s credit despite this being required in the open source license. It is a common misconception in China that the legal issue with copying a product is purely from misrepresenting it as someone else’s product, so they remove logos and names even where they shouldn’t. Clearly doesn’t apply to open source projects like this. The copyright on RetroBit’s GCVideo-based products has had Ingo Korb’s name removed and if you take it apart you will see “BF” on the connector that BitFunx had produced for these. They do sell the connector for other GCVideo builds, which is kinda cool since no one else makes metallic GameCube digital port plugs. It may not be “giving back” in the way people expect but I appreciate it. For BitFunx’s digital to analog audio used in their component cables, I’d like to see that given back to the open source GCVideo project. Instead, BitFunx reportedly made the entire GC component cable for RetroBit, scrubbed Ingo’s name from it, and then got the audio backwards. Ugh! Of course, MiSTer and most of the boards are open source so he makes those too, but his earlier boards had several issues including everything from missing components/headers, backwards LEDs, and more. His older MiSTer boards are still flooding certain markets and should be avoided. Saying which markets could be what triggered the algorithm last time. You are probably safest if you buy directly from him, but many refuse to due to his reputation. He really doesn’t know where the line is drawn on commercializing other people’s work. His so called “value MiSTer” that you mention is just the base DE10 Nano from Terasic/Intel with Alexey’s MiSTer RAM module… neither of which are his designs. You can buy those from numerous other places so I wouldn’t present your 3D printed case as a companion to his specific bundle. Anyone can take an open source project to DIY and make a few extras to sell, and he definitely helps increase supply of things like OSSC and DCDigital… so I often give him the benefit of the doubt when everyone starts to dogpile him for “cloning.” Still, he keeps doing more and more egregious things to make enemies of the most gracious engineers in the retro gaming community. He’s made the PixelFX guys openly regret releasing their previous designs as open source. I still believe he is helping with the supply issue for many things but it’s clear he’s working off the community instead of working with them. I see he recently sponsored DarthCloud’s BlueRetro GitHub since he plans to sell a product based on it, but what the community really wants to see is designs given back in return and proper attribution while respecting a creator’s IP (RetroTink 2X wasn’t open source in any way). I’m not sure but he may also be behind PSIO and GDEmu clones, and neither of those were open source either.

@@VKsChannel Yes. Terasic makes the DE10 Nano, but you still need the RAM module for most cores. It’s his I/O board that appears to have had the most problems. It wasn’t an issue with the original design, it was just quality control issues like backwards components and cost-cutting issues like leaving our unused connectors that ended up getting used in the future. The current 64MB RAM module is designed by Alexey Melnikov, which is why his name is in the silk screen… unless RetroScaler/BitFunx removed it. You can literally buy the DE10 Nano directly from Terasic or any number of other places (Mouser, Digikey, etc) when they have stock. >The Best way to Enjoy Retrogames! This is a very subjective statement IMO. Sure, we may get more accurate emulation, BUT a huge component of the retro experience is reproducing the actual intended look developers subjectively developped the games for. And that would mean CRT screens for home consoles, or specific LCD screen properties for different handhelds. 22:24, you're using a very old and outdated version of RetroArch for your comparison. Also the most recommended SNES core is the core that's called BSNES with no extra words in the name. That's extremely accurate and is also still being updated. Also, you attempt to compare Run-Ahead but you fail to mention Frame Delay, which is another important input delay reduction feature. This kinda detracts from the credibility of your otherwise excellent video. There's no need to exaggerate the differences between the two platforms in order to make one appear even better. I wonder what viewers who don't know any better will think when they see things like this? When you spoke about serial processing vs parallel processing I'm not sure if that's a 100% correct conclusion as well. To me what should be more important is the processing time it takes to complete the tasks. A good desktop PC Processor is orders of magnitude faster than an FPGA, so who is to say that certain tasks can't be completed in the same time as the FPGA or fast enough that it makes no difference to accuracy. There are cycle accurate cores and emulators available on other platforms as well. How much more accurate can you or do you need to get than that? Can't multicore CPUs also process tasks of different chips in parallel as well? It has been shown that RetroArch with Run-Ahead can actually achieve lower input lag than the original consoles in some instances. How is a user to "feel" a difference there if both are configured to have the same input lag as the console being emulated. Also an FPGA does perform emulation just by definition of the word emulation as none of the software it runs was originally written to run on the chips which the FPGA is trying to mimic. So you can call it FPGA emulation but don't say it's not emulation. I find MiSTer quite interesting, let's keep things on the straight and narrow however where accurate information is expected to be disseminated both about it and it's alternatives.
@VKsChannel
@VKsChannel Жыл бұрын
It wouldn't make a difference on the retroarch version, and the standalone version of bsnes was the most updated and it was still slower than the mister And no matter how fast your computer is it will have a high latency because of the OS, mister emulates the hardware which is much more closer than emulating through software it is indeed emulation but the result is much closer to the real deal than any software emulation, I like to compare the mister to a juicer and emulators as powdered juice both taste similar but the juice from the juicer while not being the same thing as eating the fruit itself tastes very close to the real deal its still the physical juice of the fruit just obtained in a different way, the mister has the same electrical behavior inside as the original hardware its just not the same chips

@Inv8erZlM Жыл бұрын
Each individual game, not console, needs a different run ahead setting to run properly. Most people just set it at 1-2 frames globally, which is wrong. Also, you need a beefy computer to run the more accurate emulators without issue. If you wanna hook it up to crt, you gotta fiddle with drivers. You’re right, you can get an equivalent experience with emulation, it’s just that it’s a pita for a lot of people. With a MiSTer set up, you just run the script and drop roms on it. You can fiddle with the settings if you like tinkering, but all the games will run, sound, and look great without any tweaking.
@CyberLabStudio
@CyberLabStudio Жыл бұрын
@@VKsChannel Your analogy sounds nice but you still didn't use Frame Delay in your testing. Try again using up to date software as they're always working to improve these things. A PC doesn't have to have High Latency in general or High Latency due to the OS. While it may be possible for it to have relatively higher latency than the FPGA, that isn't absolute. That Latency can vary with how much processing power is available. With Run-Ahead and Frame Delay optimally configured, it has been tested and proven that it can match the input latency of actual hardware or even surpass it. You can't get any better or more accurate than that. If MiSTer emulation is accurate it would match the accuracy of the real systems. If this can already be surpassed or matched by software emulation using the aforementioned techniques then what are you trying to prove again? Maybe a good comparison could be comparing both to actual hardware. What I would say though and you probably should leave things at this too, is that MiSTer and other good FPGA emulators give you very precise latency that is true to the original consoles or at least potentially extremely close out of the box - i.e. with no additional setup necessary. This is the real advantage because just as your testing has shown, because it doesn't agree with other similar tests of the same thing, setting up Frame Delay and Run-Ahead is an added step and can lead to varying results on different hardware setups and depending on how the features are setup. That is a huge win for FPGA emulation. If RetroArch comes with a switch or a setting called match actual hardware input latency and it works well no matter what hardware it is running on then I'd say that advantage is negated. Do remember that MiSTer cores have to be programmed correctly in order to be accurate. That programming can be incomplete or have bugs. The development has had a great headstart though given that all the hard work in terms of hardware research and documentation has already been done to create these wonderful software emulators that have been around for decades in some instances. It's probably easier to get an accurate experience using a MiSTer because the general focus of the project is on accuracy. Hacks, enhancements and workarounds can also be programmed into a MiSTer core if the developers wanted to do so. With software emulation, there is a lot of choice and variability in terms of accuracy of emulators available. This is in most cases for good reason though as some of those emulators started development at a time when hardware resources as well as documentation were not as available and even the programming techniques and approaches would have evolved considerably over the years. Then there's that little thing called CRT Shaders/Filters, while FPGA devices have just started to include some basic or slightly above basic CRT Shaders/Filters, what's available to RetroArch and Reshade users is at the absolute pinnacle of quality and advancement in this area of emulation. Not all users have access to a CRT so they have to rely on whatever non-CRT technology is available to them to actually see their games. Having the best CRT shaders/filters available forms an important and integral part of the overall immersion and experience of enjoying the old games that we love so dearly. Have you seen HSM Mega Bezel Reflection Shader, CyberLab Mega Bezel Death To Pixels Shader Preset Pack or Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor in action? Those things emulate CRTs down to the RGB triad level and also emulate differences between the video output chips and characteristics of different consoles as well. These are fine details and nuances that only the most discerning of retrogaming aficionados would be able to appreciate though. Is MiSTer CRT emulation as accurate as that?
