More information on Lara Fabian: Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, .... In my personal opinion, she is even the best. There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register. So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence: • she speaks 2 languages natively (french, italian), and 2 others fluently (english, spanish), can speak a bit of dutch (and sicilian), and understand quite well russian and portuguese. She has sung in 12 languages in total • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music with the composer. • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens. A quick background on her and her career: She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( her grandfather is from Detroit). She was raised in sicilia first then in Belgium so she speaks both italian and french as native languages. She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory. She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today. She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada. She now lives in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship She became very famous there and then conquered France in 1996/1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music). In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, stayed number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for 58 weeks in a row and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US. This concert is legendary and the song you just reviewed is from this concert. But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan. She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar through her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is absolutely massive in Russia for instance. She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace", used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera, topped the charts for months and become a recurrent in the local singing contests since then. Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban (they are friends and he told she is a role model for him), … With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there. Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her. She is Dimash's idol: I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep. He covered many of her songs, most of these were composed by Igor Krutoy and written by by Lara. Out of my mind I can list: ○ Adagio (She wrote it and is the original performer), ○ Mademoiselle Hyde (she wrote it and is the original performer), ○ Love of Tired Swans (she wrote the song in French under the title "Je t'aime encore" and was the original performer of the french then the russian versions, Dimash covered the russian version) ○ Ascolta La Voce / Vocalize (this was a pure vocalization and she was the original performer, then lyrics were added for Dimash and it was rebranded as "Know") She also wrote the lyrics of Dimash's song "Your Love". And she covered "Love is like a dream" before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva). Finally, they also performed "Ti Amo Cosi" together, in trio with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Sumi Jo then again later with Dmitri and Alina Yarovaya, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida. Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy: Igor and Dimash connected after his Adagio cover, also endorsed by Lara. Igor came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him after it. Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs, some have Lara as a role model and big inspiration: ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio), ○ Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime), ○ Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie), ○ Morissette Amon (Broken Vow), ○ Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace), ○ Cakra Khan (Broken Vow), ○ Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow), ○ Regine Velasquez (Broken Vow), ○ Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade, Je t'aime), ○ Forestella (Je suis Malade), ○ Almira (from 4th Impact band) (Broken Vow), ○ Gigi de Lana (Broken Vow) ○ Julie Anne san Jose (Adagio, Broken Vow), ○ Rimar ( Adagio, Broken Vow, Know), ○ Il Divo (Adagio) ○ Daria Bentsa (I guess I loved you), ○ Sarah Geronimo (Broken Vow) ○ Laura Bretan ( Adagio, Caruso), ○ Jackie Evancho (Je t’aime, Caruso and Broken Vow, BV rewritten as « Imaginer » by Lara for Jackie), ○ Amir (Je t’aime), ○ Vitas (Adagio), ○ Anastasia Luna (Adagio), ○ Jeck (Je T’Aime), ○ Evgenia Fanfara (Adagio), ○ Anna Eriksson (Je suis malade), ○ Choi Sung Hoon (Je suis malade), ○ Soprano Turetsky band (Adagio) ○ Majda Roumi (Adagio), ○ Harrison Craig (Broken Vow), ○ Petra Berger (Adagio, Broken Vow), ○ Katerina Maslova (Je t’aime, I guess I loved you) ○ Sevara Nazarkhan (Je t’aime) ○ .... NB: Lara did cover Caruso , Je suis malade, and Love by grace, these are not her originals, but I mention these here as the related artists were attracted to cover it again after listening to Lara’s version. Today, Lara still has an amazing voice and tone and can still reach the 5th octave with resonance ; she still offers these emotive renditions that are her unique signature. In June 2022, she kicked off a WW tour and stunned her fans once again with 5 magical concerts in Canada. She completed the europe part in September/October and I attended a concert from this tour. It was packed and she was again spectacular. On April and May 2023 she had again a wonderful concerts in Tbilissi, Georgia, and in Ouzbekhistan and Kazakhstan. Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

Because of Celine Dion. Everybody compared them so much and Celine was able to be famous in USA 1st and that completely blocked Lara Fabian career. A lot of amazing artist are like Lara Fabian story. If you check Beyonce or others singers, you will be able to learn about so many singers completely destroyed because of the threat they were. This entire performance is just a masterclass in connection with emotions in a performance. The shivering breaths like she's on the verge of crying, dropping out of song into speech as if nothing matters anymore not even singing, and even dropping the mic and basically shouting in despair at the audience for a second... and then you see how it takes her a moment after the song to gather herself and come back to reality

Hello everybody, I'm an old guy from the south of France and am a fan of Lara Fabian. I enjoyed your comments. We can, indeed, feel her sadness and despair, her breath and sighs and sobbings. Then her tone and expression changes to anger. She really is an excellent performer. This song had been written and performed by a male singer (Serge Lama) in the 70's. It didn't have the success that Lara had about 20 years later. By the way, from what I've read, Lara has inspired Dimash. It would be interesting to compare Lara Fabian singing 'Adajo' live and Dimash singing it too. Not comparing who sings it the best, but compare each of them in their own style. It is sang in english. Thank you again for your very interesting analysis.

I had no idea. One artist that my new friends kept suggesting,(these are fans from Italy, Peru, Beirut, France) was Ms. Lara Fabian. I had heard the name three weeks ago but never followed up, until last Saturday. Since than I've become obsessed with her sound. She has been on the international stage for many years and is very well known in Europe, but not in North America. I'm enclosing two performances of her original composition "Adagio" . One in Italian the other in English. She's reportedly has a three octave range. To my unpracticed ear, no clue. That is why I make a plea to you for enlightenment. Lara Fabian - Adagio Italian (Live with a Philharmonic Orchestra at Night of The Proms 2007) Lara Fabian - Adagio (Video) Any consideration for this new explorer in sound will be forever grateful. You are absolutely right. It is not her song, but she had a pretty dramatic emotional real life around that time. You are also right in that Lara preplans virtually everything in her performances. She has never, or almost never, left anything to chance. You are right that most singers have one or two but not all the attributes that make a great performer. Lara is not only a technically excellent singer with a beautiful tone, but she also applies to her performances her emotional intelligence, her physical energy and serious acting and songwriting ability. A tour through her career will demonstrate that. For her acting (and singing) check out Madamoiselle Hyde, a film of song episodes with lyrics by her and music by Igor Krutoy from 2010. (It is not "light" viewing). But I recommend you first check out her performance of Yentl from her Pure concert . IMO she could have been a Broadway star. You may not know that two of her early idols were Barbra Streisand and the late Freddie Mercury. Have fun!

This performance was in 1999 or 2000. The song was written for a man to sing but, incredibly, she sang it as a woman and pulled it off beautifully. She still sings today but, unfortunately she never received the recognition she so deservedly should have received. During the turn of the Century someone by the name of Celine Dion was making her mark and her support team felt threatened by Lara when she came to Canada and the States from Europe to make her mark. They did everything they could to make it difficult for Lara and Lara eventually went back to Europe very disappointed because she didn't accomplish what she wanted to do. Ironically, she is receiving more attention via these old video's then she ever did back then. A note about you. Thank you very much for a wonderful, very professional yet at the same time an emotional explanation of what was going on as Lara sang this classic song. Another note: This video is about Lara Fabian and my wish is to not take anything away from it. But, because of your obvious expertise there is another artist whom I wish you would consider listening to. I'm not giving you links or anything like that but I will plant a seed with you and just mention her name. It is Angelina Jordan.

Thsi song was written by iconic French singer Serge Lama (who made a name for himself by also creating a musical about the Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte), and composed by Alice Dona, his former partner in life. It quickly became a hit and his most famous song, so much so that he can not perform without singing it at everyone of his gigs. Lara Fabian covered it the way we hear it here, and that probably was her best performance ever. She is a highly skilled singer, but her choice got her to work with poorly inspired producers and tour managers. This got her a reputation of a "superficial" singer, when all she ever wanted was to live her passion for singing. This moment shows how invested and focused she is, perhaps too deeply to have a good knowledge of what happens around her (my 2 cents analysis on what she has been through). Some day tough, she may well kick back and surprise everyone with her true and pure talent. I strongly recommend everyone to have a listen at the duet she performed with the late (Claude) Maurane during the 18th "Victoires de La Musique" (French awards for musicians and performers, in pop, classical, jazz). They paired to sing live "Tu Es Mon Autre" ( = "You are my other [one]" or "You are my alter ego"), and this probably was one of the greatest moment in the history of live pop music. One to remember indeed, and everyone in France and Belgium has a place in their hearts for this song.

Lara is at the level of Celin Dion, in fact there was a bit of friction between the two due to the press defining her as Belgian (and French) Celin Dion, of Italian origin, she speaks Italian perfectly, English, French, she is an artist, indeed a star of music even a little underrated, just listen to Caruso of our Italian Sacred Monster who unfortunately passed away Lucio Dalla, just listen to Adagio, where he narrates a poem while singing and then explodes with unattainable and very long notes, rare artists succeed and she is one of those... I love her from. Before. times that I heard her sing Adagio, she is a humble, composed woman, never scandals, nice, I have no other adjectives to define how great she is

Another Master Class from the Fabulous Lara! Yes, she truly inhabits the character and is a wonderful word painter & story-teller extraordinaire! Every gesture, expression, note, phrase and every breath between are micro-intentional, carefully and skillfully crafted to 'serve the song'. No-one does 'love and loss' with the fine nuance of Lara, who manages to ride that thin line between the extremes of emotional expression and total vocal control. The only time I've ever seen her (almost ) lose that edge was in a performance of Broken Vow. Lara's parents were Belgian and Sicilian and she spent her formative years in those countries as well as in Canada, so she is truly multi-cultural and multi-lingual. [ If you haven't seen her version of 'Caruso' you are in fr a huge treat! ] So many singers look up to her, deservedly so, including the phenomenal Dimash, who cites Lara as a very significant role model. Lara is a skilled songwriter, but this was not her own song, but originally performed by French singer songwriter; Serge Lama, composed with Alice Dona. 😊

this title is one of the jewels of French song. it was initially created in 1973 by another French artist Serge Lama who was struggling in a very complicated sentimental situation. he talks about it to one of his friends (composer) who creates this superb melody for him and Serge Lama lays down these words so strong and full of feeling in less than 20 minutes. when he sang his title it was clear to many that Serge Lama put a lot into it (it was not a story it was His Story). a few years later Lara asked him for permission to repeat the title (and adapted it for a female artist) knowing the story behind this title, she also puts a lot into the interpretation of this title

This is a cover of the song "je suis malade". The original singer is Serge Lama. A very famous French singer! He's 80 years! I invite you to discover the classic record. And regarding Lara Fabia, we love her here in France, since the begining, more than 20 years ago, with her first mega hit: Je t'aime ! You must ear it ! Cheers from Paris! And we miss you Lara and Serge (both, even if for over reason). Ps: Sorry for my english :/ 😉

You've found the queen or diva! Thank you for such a thoughtful and thorough analysis of this song. She has multiple other masterpieces (or master classes) as well. She is native with her Italian and French (born in Belgium), but also fluent in English and Spanish. She is familiar with a few more and can sing in multiple others including Russian. Her work with composer Igor Krutoy is some of the classiest stuff you will find. She has done covers of Barbra, Whitney and Mariah which are as good as the originals. This is why I consider her just as good, if not better, when it comes to her power, resonance (often referred to as "The Ring") and emotion. I subscribed with hopes of hearing you critique more of her musicality.

I just recently discovered Lara and there are almost no words that do justice in describing her live performances. You are right pointing out her singing ability combined with the way she performs is what makes her so great. It's sad that she never made in big in America when she was in her prime. Supposedly, certain powers in the music industry saw her as a threat and purposely squelched her entrance into the American market. Of course now with the internet, they can no longer keep her greatness a secret. Thank you so much for giving us Lara Fabian.

Lara Fabian was born gifted with such a talent for singing. PLUS, she was very well trained by the best opera teachers from Belgium and Italy, but she decided to sing pop songs, she also has the knowledge to sing in operatic way, she studied from her 8 to 18 at the Belgium Conservatory of Music (there she learned Bel Canto, piano [she composes her own songs on piano), she started singing professionaly at the age of 15, in 1985, her first video clipe came when she turned 16, in 1986 and her first world wide albilum was releaseat the begin of 1990. Then since 1998 she kept having vocal lessons with her Italian teacher untill nowdays, she has two vocal teachers (From Belgium and Italy) and she keeps having vocal lessons at least 3 times per week on-line. Lara also workz as a vocal coach on The Voice Canada, she already worked as the vocal coach at the Star Academy program in France from 2004 /2008. Please react to Lara Fabian - Llora live in Kremlin 2010 (Llora means cry in English). She speaks fluently and composes in 4 languages (English, Spanish, Italian and French), but she is able to speak and understand a little bit of Russian, Dutch and Portuguese, she already sang live in 12 languages. Thank you.

She's a Belgian francophone artist who made her singing carreer in France, especially with this song who was actually sung in the 70's by an old French male singer Serge Lama, lyrics by Alice Dona who wrote for many French singers. This song was very popular when Serge Lama sung it but Lara Fabian took it to a next level. Funnily it's still sung by contestants in all these Voice and what have you contests.

Lara transformed that song into a piece of art. Singing, breathing, talking are like different movements in one song. If there will be a "Hall of Fame" for music performances, that one needs to be a part of it.
@MacZussie
@MacZussie Ай бұрын
P.S. Talking about other "Hall of Fame" worthy live performances, you should invest some time into a performance from 2013 by Nightwish, called "Ghost Love Score". Although only 10 months in the band, their new singer altered it into a masterpiece by also switching seaminglessly between different singing styles both powerful and delicate. As she already stood on stage as main vocalist for half of her life, since she was 16, and now with 32 years she still had power comined with long-lasting experience and training. The 10-min song from 2004 is rather a composition than a ordinary song, with different movements, that starts out amazing and gets even better until the singer's jaw-dropping climax at the very end. Don't be confused that the performance took place in front of a crowd of 82k at a Metal festival in Germany as that unique sound is beyond Metal, thus called "Symphonic Metal", in order to find a name for that perfect mesh-up of Rock & Classic elements.

French person here : I realise that parts of the translation of the song is less impactful than the original text. So just to point it out : - "Je crèverai seule" - "I'll die alone". The verb "crever" which is used here means "burst" / "pop" (like a balloon) / "die". It holds more intansity than "die" (= "mourir" in french). Also, it's way less polite than "mourir", and it's a level of language that you will use with persons you're close with and/or with people you despise. The ambiguity is the reason behind that choice. - "T'arrives" - "You come". In good french it's not "T'arrives" but "Tu arrives". The pronoun "Tu" is contracted as "T'" here to create intimacy between her and the person she is talking to. It shows also that she don't care about their opinion. She is bawling out to them about their behavior. In the context of the song it again shows that she despise that person while loving them. Also to had context: in France, singers tends a lot to sing-talk to act the song rather than """""just""""" singing it out beautifully. The beauty of the text is way more important in our culture than """""just""""" the beauty of the singing voice.

Very perspicaceous reaction, and very enjoyable. I have watched it several times and learn a bit more each time. While many people call Lara a "diva", she refuses this accolade. If being a "diva" means being a world-level apex performer with nothing to prove, and due a high level of respect,, then she is a diva. Internationally only a few others ( examples being Aida Garifullina and Dimash) are these days at this level. However, the word "diva" implies less laudable characteristics such as being molly-coddled or big-headed or difficult to work with. While Lara is known to be very demanding of her colleagues in her concerts, she has shown in her interviews that she is approachable, modest , generous, and funny. Disarmingly "normal"! I look forward to other reviews you might like to do on Lara. Cheers!

Exactly as I was thinking watching that performance. And it was a performance in every form. There are singers and there are artists. Singers sing, some really well, others not so well, but they sing. Artists perform, they take on the part as their own, act out and take possession of the lyrics as their own, and in doing so produce a complete performance. Done well, as in this case, the audience are drawn into it feeling all the emotion as if it was really happening in that moment. In this case she totally embodied the song and even hung onto it at the end. Whether that was real or just part of the act I guess only she knows, but I suspect she was drawing on a personal experience somewhere down the line. I've head this song many times on French radio, and in truth find it quite irritating, mostly because of my poor understanding of the French language. Seeing that performance and having the lyrics in English subtitles put a whole new angle on it. Great choice.
