To tighten it at the proper height you really need a floor jack that you can use to lift the whole suspension assembly to ride height. You probably won't have enough room to access the bolts if you try it any other way. Hope that helps.

Excellent video, very clear instructions and good picture. One small remark regarding safety: At 3:52 you see the support stand move, this means the car is not properly supported anymore and you have to trust the jack.

You'll want to jack up the control arm until the car lifts off the jack stands, lifting off the stands means the full weight of the car is on the jack where the wheel normally is. Hope that helps.

Well, a wishbone can be considered a control arm, but wishbone suspension is a specific kind of suspension that uses triangular arms to connect the wheel hub assembly to the chassis. Hope that answers your question.

Great video, thanks. Could you advise how similar this is to the procedure needed to change the front right (USA non-drive) control arm? I've been advised by multiple garages I can't have the tracking/alignment repaired due to a broken control arm. Understandably this may also involve/lead to other problems...

THX Ben! I will let the W40 to work overnight, I feel so confident with your great DIY HD clip, I will get that bolt out somehow, got a better punch on the way from amazon. It seems that my 1997 V70 has rusted more than the 850 Turbo you have in your videos, meaning that many factory installed bolts look and are way worse on my car, it only has 160,000 Km or 100,000 miles and only one owner before my purchase for USD 1100 or 800 Euros....

It's a slightly different repair but these directions should help quite a bit. We put anti-seize on the ball joint threads so the nut wouldn't seize to the bolt with rust, corrosion, etc. It's tough to make it too much easier, you're really going to have to pull everything out anyway, keep that strut replacement bookmarked and follow them both one after the other, and you should be able to get everything out without too much extra effort. Hope that helps.

Hi Ben, had to put back the inner bolts and nuts, tighten them a bit otherwise the control arm just moved to the front of the car and I did not get the force down to the bolt the I tried to bang out with a piece of steel and my big sledge hammer, did not need to hit that hard once both of the inner bolts were back in place.

I think he means you'll want to tighten everything at ride height as opposed to it hanging when you tighten it. He's not wrong, but removing the sway bar gives you the ability to do it in the air as opposed to on the ground behind a wheel. Hope that answers your question.

Are you able to get the nut off? Sometimes the joint will spin in place, And you may have to counter-hold the bolt with something to get enough torque to remove the nut.

thx Ben! appreciated and never forgotten. My car is 16 years old, and for example when changing the sway bars I had to use a flex grinder to cut the lower bolts since they had rusted together completely, I am just a bit worried that I might get the same when trying to replace the control arms, do you think there is room to flex cut off some of the bolts if needed? I did buy a second mini flex grinder.

I was told my control arm bushings are worn/loose and need replacing. Is this the same procedure for a 2000 s80 2.9L non-turbo? If so, it it easier to replace the control arms than the bushings (assuming the bushings come with the new control arms)? I've heard things about having to raise the engine to access screws?

Hi Ben, the car is ready, one thing.... when finalizing the second side the rubber cylinder slid a bit out of the iron part of the control arm, this on one of the inner two rubber bushings, is this bad? Or could it be dangerous? I had to use some force to get the control arm into place, did not work to bend it, had to use some iron and bang on the iron with a big hammer.

Could I use the same instructions from this video to change the control arms on a 2004 XC90 2.5T? What was the name of the substance you placed on the ball joint? Also, I intend to replace the upper spring seat and strut mount, how could I make this a much easier replacement knowing I have to change that as well. FYI - I saw the strut replacement video. +deepspacepro Sorry for the strange reply, KZfaq's comment update messed up our thread. We haven't seen any issues with stock brakes and only 1 case ever sold with the larger setup. Have you inspected the other front end components for wear? It's always possible it's not those components.
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 10 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty straight forward procedure but on the 2003 it may be a bit more difficult due to the ball joint orientation. On the 850's they bolt in from the top while the 2003 P2 chassis the ball joint bolts through the control arm from the bottom. There's a few different way's to approach this but the end result will be that you'll have to either pry the control arm down far enough to clear the ball joint thread or lift the knuckle / ball joint off of/ out of the control arm. If we can be of any more help feel free to email jasonv@fcpeuro.com.

Hi Ben, You are great! I'm a Volvo fanatic Swede living in Germany, owning S80 V8, XC70D5 and a 1997 V70 GLT, feel confident to try this,my German mechanic said that I should not tigthen the outer bolt on the control arm before lowering the car down completely because it will damage the rubber in the outer part of the new control arm if I doing it before... Does the bit where you remove the upper bolt on the sway bar make this way unnecessary? Hope you understand what I mean. Thx in advance!

thanks for this helpful video, but i have some questions remaining: doesn’t the halfshaft/drive axle stretch too far when you do this on the ground? (read it would on a lift) don’t you damage the cv joint when you put the pry bar on there? (could you pry it between control arm and spindle, or would the ball joint pop out?)
@fcpeuro

The way Ben does it in this video leaves room for the axle to extend however if you wanted to prevent this from potentially happening you could remove the axle nut allowing the axle to roam free from the hub. Hope that answers your question.

Hi Ben, the company were I bought the control arm told me, that it is important the both sides of the car is jacked up, I only jacked up one side at a time, could I have damaged something by doing this? I do remember that I had tension in the subframe. I must change the strut and all now since I still have noice when moving the steering wheel and breaking, Pretty sure that the spring cap and all the mounting parts are worn out after 16 years.

The Meyle control arms do utilize a larger ball joint. The only issues we've ever seen before is where a larger rotor was used as a performance upgrade. I brought up this issue with Meyle recently and their engineers are currently working to make the ball joint ends an OEM fit just like the Lemforder arms. Lemforder uses a tapered edge while Meyle has a straight edge. Right now however, that is the current design from Meyle. Give us a ring if we can be of any additional help 1-877-634-0063

Hi, Denis. That is correct, the ball joint is part of the control arm and you can't replace just the ball joint. It is worth noting that if the ball join is bad, likely the control arm bushings are also worn so it makes sense to replace everything at once to get your car handling like it should!

Why is it important to jack up the ball joint to compress the strut assembly to simulate normal ride height when tightening the control arm bolts back down? What will happen if I tightened them down while the strut is uncompressed? Thanks!
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 10 жыл бұрын
It's important because not tightening at ride height can put an unnecessary strain on the components when the car settles on it's full weight. Another way to think of it is that the car isn't normally weightless, so you wouldn't want the suspension to think it should be. Tightening everything down while it's not under curb weight could cause a premature failure of the parts. Hope that answers your question.

@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 9 жыл бұрын
FCP Euro yeah if you tighten it all the way with the suspension unloaded, lowering the car will tighten the bolts on those bushings too tight and will prematurely wear the bushings out due to that extra pressure.

You should always tighten it at ride height with the suspension jacked up, hope that helps.
@looncraz

Not really, the purpose of tightening at ride height (loaded) is to preload the bushings. Polyurethane bushings *should* just slip around and not take a preload at all, negating the entire purpose for tightening at ride height.

You should be able to knock it right out, it's not threaded in. I would try to heat it or use PB blaster to loosen it. Worst case scenario, remove the control arm with the spindle and carry it over to a vise which will give you more room and more options. I hope that helps.

What a gray grease do you use?

It's anti-seize just to make sure the bolts don't fuse with rust.

Quick question, do you need to grease the ball joints? I installed these just last week and I'm worrying a little. I'm about to replace the inner and outer tie rods as well. Do I need to grease those too? No grease at all, these joints are already packed with grease so you will not need to do anything special upon installation. If I can be of any more help don't hesitate to reach out to me, my name is Mike and I'm happy to help: sales@fcpeuro.com

Sounds like a good idea, didn't sound proper. Did you buy the parts from us?

These arms are not OEM parts, anyway one is Mapco Branded, I suppose by the sealed plastic bag, the other one is not in its original package, and has no evident brand. I suppose they come from different producers because of some difference I can easily notice, like the shape of the head, while one has truncated cone shape, the other one is perfectly cilindric.

heey...i tried to replace the control arms today...i had everything ready. all bolts and nuts were loose, but i can´t get out the bolt at the balljoint! i had to leave the old control arms on my car....now i don´t know what to do! : ( and i had to stop, because i didn´t want to destroy the bolt!

You may want to try and heat the bolt with a torch in an effort to free it up.

So how did it go?

Why is it important to remove the sway bar ? Is that totally necessary when setting the control arm ?
@fcpeuro

Just because there's a lot of tension, it might not be necessary to remove it entirely, but it helped us.
