Hey man, love your channel! It has helped me more than once with my X. I've been asking the "I Do Cars" channel (very entertaining if you're interested) to tear down a VQ40DE for a while now, so it was a very nice surprise to see you put this up! If I may, there were a couple of things I noticed that may save you and anyone reading this a headache or two in the future... First thing, the crank pulley. This engine may be a special case since whoever had it in the past clearly did not know what an oil change was, but removing the pulley itself doesn't require a puller at all. If it's in there normally, it just takes a wiggle and it will slide right out! I want to say I read that in the FSM, if you are in need of a copy, Id be happy to share it! Next, and my only major critique... When you were taking the head bolts out, you went from back to front, and there's a good chance the head was warped in the process. It's aluminum (one reason it's so light) and easy to damage. You want to work from the top outside corner to the opposite bottom corner in an X pattern (no pun intended), then repeat with the inner four. That applies to pretty much any part that relies on that much flat contact, including the timing covers, valve covers, intake plenum, etc. The camshafts you seemed to get at least partly right, so cheers on that! It just worried me because I don't think I would buy an aluminum head that I knew was removed like that. Not trying to be an ass, just trying to help. Part of me is screaming that you know what you're doing and you were just tearing it down as a palate cleanser, but I had to mention it because no one wants their heads to end up being rocking chairs, haha. Again, you do awesome work and are appreciated, and I hope you keep putting out content!
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy 9 ай бұрын
Glad you like the channel! You’re right, normally I just pull it by the old “wiggle and pull” but this one was hard as hell for some reason and I was not about to deal with it. As far as the heads, I really was tearing this down as a “watch me tear this down” and not a “how to tear down a VQ” I didnt make it clear in the video but I would hope that people would not tear down a VQ the way i did if they were actually planning on reusing it. If anyone was actually going to buy the heads (no one did) I would have made it clear how they were removed and that they would need them tested and possibly decked if they were not perfect. Anyone buying used heads should be doing that anyway. Neither here nor there though, 99% of that engine went to the recyclers to be melted down into white claw cans. 😂 Thanks for the feedback dude!

Awesome video! Just did the swap myself on a frontier. Thought I might mention you'll want to keep your AC lines from the compressor and also that oil pressure sensor. You'll reuse that oil pressure sensor on the vk56, and the low pressure ac line can be bent a bit to fit the vk56 compressor. High pressure will require v8 pathfinder line.
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy Жыл бұрын
Hey that's great info, thank you! How did you end up handling NATS and the wiring harness?
@ke_ata
@ke_ata Жыл бұрын
@Rythecarguy there's really only one person that does the conversion as a service, and that's Brennan over at drivendesire. His turnaround is pretty quick. As for NATS. There's two options. If you plan on getting aftermarket headers and uprev, it can be tuned out completely. (Expect to pay a bit for this) But less you have an entire titan, you can grab the BCM out of the titan and swap it into the xterra. Should be same plugs. Than remove the security chip from the titan key and xterra key. Put the chip from the titan into the xterra key and your set. However, I couldn't get another key programmed correctly (I only had one), so I ended up tuning out NATS with uprev to create keys at a much cheaper cost.
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy Жыл бұрын
@@ke_ata thanks for this info! Brennan has been hard AF to get ahold of lately but I am still hoping to get it out to him to complete. I love the idea of the BCM because I am parting out my Titan anyway. So I will move that over. I also heard you can change the NATS antenna and the key cylinder in the ignition so you can use the same keys as the titan as well. I want to do that because I have two titan keys and two remotes. The Xterra only had one key.

Ok question for you. Got a 07 that had the cats clogged before we purchased it and the cats started to disintegrate and it’s consuming oil lime crazy. Is it worth it to rebuild the motor and install new rings or should we just buy a used motor and hope the same thing didn’t happen to it ?

More excellent progress getting you closer to new adventures in the new rig. One small suggestion. I know others have mentioned the way you have your tail lights mounted. You certianly might have reasons for mounting them where you did but as others have mentioned it seems like they could get damaged if you happen to drag the back end and being that they are angled down their visibility is diminished I imagine. Was wondering since you seem to have pretty good fab skills if you couldn't just make a couple brackets that you could mount to the top edge of your bumper that would be L shaped sort of and bent so that you could mount your lights to the brackets. This would have the lights up higher basically kind of as if you mounted them to the camper itself but attached to the bumper so you wouldn't have to drill into the camper. Visibility would be much better and they wouldn't get damaged if you do happen to drag your bumper.

Lol some how You Tube put my comment on another vid on this vid. Anyway another awesome vid thanks for the great work man. I'm trying to decide if I'm going to rebuild my Fronty motor. Got 416,000 on it and it finally developed a large enough head gasket leak that I don't think I'll be able to fix it with head gasket sealer this time. It's been such a great truck and a great engine that I really just want to keep the truck but as you can imagine the truck got 416,000 miles of hard work and play so she's dinged and dented and the drivers seat is pretty much work out so I'm also looking for another 2nd gen crew cab LWB 4X4 to replace it. Truck prices right now though holy smokes.
@Rythecarguy
@Rythecarguy Жыл бұрын
416,000!!! You officially have the most miles I have ever heard of on the VQ. Is that all original core components? Including bearings? Thats a tough call, I would say that if you are able to have extending down time for the truck then putting new head gaskets in and redoing the timing would be a good move. If it continues to work for you then an investment of probably around 1500 it way cheaper than buying a new truck.
@duncdunc76
@duncdunc76 Жыл бұрын
@Rythecarguy Yea all original components for the most part engine wise as far as I know. Ive obviously replaced suspension and brake parts over the years and I bought the truck used with 60,000 on the odo and put the rest on myself so not sure what if anything was done by the 1st owner. Over my ownership I replaced 2 radiators due to leaks, one at around 150thou the other around 300thou, and the heater core around the time of the 2nd radiator due to the hose attachment gasket on the fitting on the heatercore failing. I put new plugs and coils on the truck at 300thou thinking the poor running conditions I was having were due to me never having replaced them before. But it turned out I needed new catalytic coverters. So I put new Cats on the truck around 350thou after the Cats were so clogged it was putting my truck in limp mode lol. I've been a little hard on the truck and ashamed to say a bit lackadaisical on some maintinence lol. I did change the oil every 10thou with Valvoline High Mileage syn blend and used a Valvoline Purolator One oil filter over the life of the truck. At the time I had my Cats replaced I also had the valve covers replaced because I had a pesky leak that was dripping on my exhaust and really causing a stink. Oh and since I never changed the fluids in my diffs my rear diff went out at around 350thou and decided to put a new rear end in the truck. I did do a lot of towing with the truck over the years so I blame the diff failure on myself. Then ofcourse around that time I developed a small headgasket leak and was burning coolant in cylinder 5 with a good bit of white smoke in the morn when I started up the truck. Used some head gasket sealer and it fixed the problem until 416thou and now I've got another good sized leak pouring coolant on the ground. It's been a Great truck and if the body was pristine which it is far from as it has been a hard working truck all it's life then I would probably just drop another engine in it. But it's pretty beat up and I think the only way it comes back to life is if I try some serious gasket sealer procedure or replace the headgaskets which is an undertaking of time that I probably can't commit to. So more then likely it'll be a parts truck for the next one I buy as I'm hunting for one just like mine right now. Funny thing is the long bed crew cabs are harder to find then the short beds. Anyway they are great trucks and I've seen comments on lots of Frontier you tube content where owners have talked about their trucks going 400 and even 500 thou. Of course not sure if that's all original. If I was a better owner and better at preventative maintenence I believe I could have easily gotten my truck to 500thou. Definately going to be going for it with the next one with the mindset to treat it a little bit nicer.

He's probably referring to what my dad( Veteran master mechanic) calls “modern nissans” which he says is when fiat came in and although they simplified things by putting a 2.5 or 3.5 in every car, this saved nissan as they were in trouble however there quality and reliability suffered massively. It's no secret that nissan cars are not great. Even the Z is not great like it used to be. However the trucks and suv seem to be a lot better. I was wondering if it's because up until the 2nd gen X they had distributors still and rear drum brakes must be the last company to do this. I have a 1st gen 3.3 x and I specifically avoided the 2nd gen because I have heard the 4.0 has many issues? I sorta wish I had the 2nd gen now.
