I wonder where you would put Hotdogs, Horseshoes & Handgrenades on the gun handling list Sure you have to be pretty precise with reloading, it wants to be more realistic, but i feel like it feels better and easier to reload than in Boneworks, because the gun doesnt wobble around when you hold it with one hand and isnt floaty at all. Nice video btw :D

Idk why I didn't include H3 on this because I absolutely adore H3. I think I'd put it between Fallout 4 and alyx because it doesn't hold your hand as much as Fallout 4 does and like you said, the gun doesn't wobble around like in Boneworks/lab. I dig this perspective. It's important for VR games to find a balance of fun and realism. I'm still a sucker for physics based weapons, but there's room for automating some of the more tedious actions. Vertigo 2 does this phenomenally imo. Load shells individually into your shotgun? No. Charge it with a single power cell that auto ejects itself after use? Yes.

I think it's pretty telling that Resident Evil 4 VR was such a huge hit. It was made as a flatscreen game first with all the considerations that go into that, THEN many years later, the VR version was made with some very reasonable level of thought about how to make it work with the current hardware (with maybe the exception of grenades :P ) giving us a VR game with a whole bunch of interaction improvements over its old version but with a chunky level of content you don't see in VR enough. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me it made me only really want to experience any further RE games in VR rather than flatscreen.

More analysis like this please! The more I play VR games, the more confused I get and start to dislike it as a concept when it comes to the visual and physical disconnect. Guns not clipping through walls is a good example. Same with any sword-like game where a sword stops when it collides with something physical. There's nothing outside VR preventing this movement, so it is jarring when it happens in VR. Suddenly my brain is trying to make my arm match where it is in VR, and my eyes are watching my virtual arm flail about. I'm convinced this is why Beat Saber works so well. The sabers cut through anything and are never stopped, always matching where your arms and hands intend them to be.

I think the Nintendo Wii and PS3 move did it's best for motion control games. Might sound a bit odd, but it is kind of true, because some Wii games are simple and fun, pls it doesn't force you to grab an individual object to reload. (Except for Medal Of Honor: Heroes 2). There's nothing wrong with having everything as an interactable physics object, but it will get very tedious everytime if it's done so often. Plus, might be a personal preference, not all of us are used to wearing a VR headset, some people can get motion sick when wearing it. :)

physics in vr seems like something that those who dont like it hate it and those who do like it love it. For example Bonelab the physics in bonelab can lead to stuff like clipping through doors and other physics bugs that can make it very hard to play the game for some people but on the other hand for those who can and learn to avoid issues like that the physics become extremely fun to play with. For example look at a gun in most vr games guns serve a singular purpose to shoot enemies but in a physics based game you could grab the gun by the muzzle and use it like a sword or reach ammo boxes that you could not reach without it and being able to do stuff like that makes it so much fun and there is much more you can do with physics as well. A big factor for physics enjoyment is likely also being able to look past traditional uses for items in games as in bonelab if you only ever uses things like you would in any other game then its just like the other games but your gun bumps into objects

Yeah another big issue with a lot of VR games that I feel like Alyx did a great job in at least attempting to fix, is accessibility a lot of VR games, really feel like they design them for your standard, teen/young adult, fully able-bodied male demographic and just call it a day, they don't really make seated modes work in any way beyond height calibration, there's mo change in how UI is laid out to account for a smaller vertical space for which to put game elements like ammo pouches or secondary weapons, and good gods if I had a dollar for ever game where they just complete forgot people exist who have breasts, I would have a dollar for every game in my steam library that isn't blade and sorcery, half life alyx, beat saber, smash drums or pistol whip which is a lot basically there is no target demographic, because that would imply the existence, of a market they could potential reach, but aren't focusing as hard on. It's almost like they don't want anyone but their target demographic playing their games sometimes I get that these are mostly indie studios and they don't have as much funding, but they're the ones who decided to make a VR game, and if they can't make design that is more inviting to more players, VR really won't last
@BonelessVR
@BonelessVR Жыл бұрын
The accessibility issue is a huge one. I don’t even remember any vr games even having a color blind option. They are small and don’t have a lot of funding, but I never see accessibility features on any roadmaps for games, I’ll vocalize that more in future videos. I really appreciate your input!

This is a great video! However, I see a lot of people in the comments saying this proves doubts they had about vr. I want to state that while everything that they said in this video is mostly true in my opinion, the state virtual reality is in is still very impressive, entertaining, and can very well be a quality experience. There are a lot of small time dev made games that are pretty bad and even games in the oculus store that are just not worth buying or even playing if it's free. But there are dozens of top notch vr games that totally make putting on the headset worth it. Great vid by the way! Definitely earned a sub :3

My favorite VR games are ones that fully take advantage of VR controls, like Windlands and To The Top. Windlands II is one of the most gorgeous VR games ever, with an incredible use of scale, color, and lighting. It often leaves me feeling small and humbled. I can't help but look around in awe at some of the levels. The story really falls flat, though. Characters kind of stand there and talk to you awkwardly... Most VR games have this problem, like The Gallery, which has a beautiful and immersive world, but characters only talking to you over radios or from far-away platforms. It's like being in a play rather than taking part in a story. What VR really needs is better character interactions. Half Life Alyx is the best in this regard, because the characters are in the world, and you can walk around them and interact with them. Even VR Kanojo doesn't have that level of interactivity, and it's a one-on-one kind of thing..yeah, it's not really a "game," but still. Story-driven VR games need to work hard to make THE PLAYER part of the story. Otherwise, players will end up goofing around and clipping items through the characters to comedic results.

I think I’ve said this here before, but an issue with VR that this video made me think of is that so many places concerning VR like KZfaqrs focusing on it or r/virtualreality (granted, of course something infuriating comes from Reddit) feel like they focus on literally ANYTHING other then the gameplay, and I feel like that’s such a massive thing holding VR back. To use sword fighting as an example, sure B&S has more accurate physics then something like Broken Edge, but in the former you can literally win every fight by ether grabbing enemies or holding your arm out all the time. This focus on technical aspect with especially the most high end VR games makes them feel way too easy. I should probably note that the Quest isn’t perfect ether, but least a lot of Quest games like Runner can have a decent challenge. I should probably mention that I find completely 2D games like classic/actual rougelikes (Unreal World, Tales Of Maj’eyal) or Faith:The Unholy Trinity more immersive for some reason, so that most DEFIANTLY effects my opionion.

@@BonelessVR I feel like due to the focus on marketing VR there’s two extremes ether the hardcore enthusiast side that I ranted about, or the extremely casual side that you frequently hear is “killing VR”, and it’s kinda pigeonholed the market if that makes sense. Another issue is as others before me have said, VR is much harder to develop for. Take the old school rougelikes for example again. A lot of those are HUGE games that are often made by a small team if not one person, and from what I know about VR the hardware isn’t that accessible yet. Which I do feel is restricting what can be made if that makes sense. And that’s not considering games that decide to go with their own engine because that’s outside my wheelhouse, but is something kinda common in the indie space (off the top of my head Teardown and Return Of The Obra Dinn). I feel like these points might be why a lot of VR games lack depth. And it’s not like a simple game can’t have depth, for a probably weird example look at Five Nights At Freddy’s fan games. I hope I’m making sense, I tend to be poor with my wording.

@@josephkeen7224 I feel you 100%. VR is still in its infancy, I may have made the edit too fast but only around 1.3% of people say they use VR compared to ~45% of the same group reporting console/pc gaming usage. Ok so you raise some good points. Many VR games are too shallow, but I think you are way off the mark on physicality. If I just wanted to press a button instead of moving to do it then why am I playing VR in the first place? The only exceptions are games like VTOL where you pilot aircraft and even there the coolest part is pressing the buttons physically. Ghosts of tabor work because where in flat screen you collect items that you see in a menu, here you see them and they feel like "your stuff". I agree that fun is the most important aspect, but I had way more fun with Boneworks rather than Alyx when I first got into VR because it went that extra mile to make it realistic and open in world design, while in Alyx I felt too handheld and claustrophobic with the small environments.
@BonelessVR
@BonelessVR 10 ай бұрын
That's understandable! On flat screen I mainly play tactical fps's, Tarkov is a bit too much for me with all the extraction stuff, but Insurgency, Squad, Ready or Not, those are my type of game. When I play something similar in VR like Tabor, Into The Radius, or Breachers, I constantly ask myself why am I even playing this when I could just play the desktop counterpart and be more relaxed. About Half Life Alyx v Boneworks, I am a big fan of the more curated approach to story telling, but games like that suffer in terms of replayability. A lot of consumers dive head first into VR and don't understand where the tech is at right now and end up shelving their headset for months, the ones who stay usually end up finding VRChat and making friends there. I think the expectations from a typical gamer compared to a long term VR gamer are widely different and I'd love to see more games go a bit further to bridge that gap. Damn I should've put that in the script lmao I really appreciate you watching and leaving your thoughts!

Considering how expensive and time consuming game dev is, I am constantly flabbergasted how little thought goes into designing a good working interaction framework for a game and what makes a VR game fun. On the other hand its no surprise, when Unity with their own XR interaction toolkit still try to push non-physics based systems in 2024, making it feel like something from the VERY early days of VR (which is nearly a decade). HL:A or Boneworks level physic based interactions should be the standard now and work out of the box with modern gaming engines and not something you need to make yourself. The Unity XR toolkit cant even do hand posing or animation on its own...

8:07 I don’t know where you heard that SailVR was only made by one person, but I personally know 4 of the people who have worked on it. I believe at least 20 people have had their hands in its development. There was an art team who worked on it very early on and then only programmers for several years after that. The “one person” I’m guessing you’re referring to is the owner who finds investors and sells people on the product but he doesn’t make it. As a dev myself I’m quite sick of people assuming so many games were created by one genius who could do everything at high quality in a short period of time. Virtually no games are like this. But the world’s obsession with these “Tony Stark” stories is really discouraging to developers when they realize making a game all by yourself is extremely costly and challenging and not feasible for almost anyone.

One more thing. “Are the graphics realistic? Nah” feels like an attack to me haha this game’s graphics are as good as you can possibly expect an Indy studio to produce.

How is boneworks reloading so hard lol? Into the radius is the next game that I like how it handled guns. Isn't the whole point of VR to interact with the world using tracking, not buttons?

Don't get me wrong I got used to it, but I still ask myself why am I playing this when I could be playing something else with better weapon mechanics. Into the radius is god dang awesome, maybe a bit scary to me haha

@@BonelessVR yeah, into the radius is pants shittingly terrifying. I still have dreams or maybe nightmares of entering old pitch black houses to fight those mimics and after seeing them moving I unload a mag into them and think"I should have switched to full auto, it almost got me".

Having it being reloaded for you in vr is so lame it’s not even funny physically reloading weapons and interacting with them is awesome(other than that very good video, I just don’t really agree with you, and ofc there is flaws with physics based guns and stuff but I’d rather than then press a button to reload because it kind of destroys the point of vr)

It might just be me and my peanut brain, but I’m lucky enough to enjoy all the clunkiness you didn’t like about boneworks. The novelty of “woooaaaahhh, I’m IN the game” hasn’t worn off for me yet and after 2 years, I’m not too sure it will. Fantastic video nonetheless!

Woah wait a minute, people being orderly and having a nice discussion on the internet? I really appreciate that, you’re living up to your name! Without a doubt there is more to vr than fps games, they just get made so frequently I felt it was a good genre to talk about. There actually was a section meant for this video talking about beatsaber and how much fun it is because it keeps it simple, but I ended up having to cut it out to keep the video flowing better. Thank you again for being kind, hope to see you around here again :)

I personally prefer the Boneworks and H3VR mechanics 🤷 IMO Half-Life: Alyx gun mechanics and gameplay are kinda eh. And the fact that it is so clearly designed around teleport locomotion kinda ruins some parts of it for me.

Completely understandable! Going to be doing another run through of Boneworks just for fun, still uncertain about Bonelab. H3VR is one of my favorite games ever, just hop in and start pinging targets on the 45 range, I adore that game and it's developers
@kidzorro

I agree, the gun mechanics in Half-Life: Alyx actually feel watered down and even dated at times. It seems they did that intentionally for new adopters. What really holds the game up are the visuals and optimization, considering the game can run smoothly on a midrange system. It is actually quite an incredible feat which I doubt other developers will achieve for some time, barring improved super sampling and foveated rendering.

Uh VR has NEVER been "mainstream" and still isn't because no one wants to strap an awkward helmet onto their head to play games. It will never take off or be anything as long as it's literally a pain to engage with. Mainstream means mainstream. Mainstream gaming is synonymous with mindless time killer gaming. Most people don't actually like art. They don't watch movies, listen to music, or play video games because they're interested in the art forms. It's largely just brainless cows consuming arbitrary stuff to kill time until they go horizontal. You don't seem to get that.
