I live in Costa Rica. Here we don't have government incentives for EVs but rather heavy taxes to maintain a huge and inefficient number of public employees. Thus only very rich people can have EVs. So I enjoy Bjorns videos dreaming what it will be like when we common people can drive second-hand EVs and stop polluting with fossil cars. Keep the great job man !!!

@@fietsaccu-repair I guess it depends, as usual. The average car price here is around €36k, so an e-Up would be well below that. Not to mention of course, that a government grant takes at least 4k off the price, more like 6k. With that the local price is closer to €17k (starting price is lower). Well suited as a beginners car, a second car used for the kids (if they have a license) or the wife. Main car in many cases is a company car though.

Instead of "wasting" 40 hours per week + commuting which didn't result in any video material (obviously), you now see way more videos. And the Nimbering in the past was also very time consuming.

Thank you for the test! One thing I heard is that maximum charging speed on CCS for e-Up greatly depends on battery temp at start of charging. So in one forum they recommended "pre-charging" until battery is a bit warmer and then starting the charging session again and this should result in higher speeds. I'm pretty sure this makes no sense and is some sort of urban myth, but if you think it would make a funny video it would be great to see if this is actually true

@nukularpictures

Well Tesla is ahead because this car is the basic one. So battery is just half the size, no complex thermal management, etc. And then I have to say I like that the charging speed is quite limited. Means that the battery will last forever. Plus the range and consumption is quite good for the car. It was always a problem with the ice Up that the consumption is not as low as you would think for a car this size. Also I would not say it is that bad. I mean yeah it is not a car you want to do long trips in but that was never the purpose of an Up anyways. On the highway the car is not really nice to drive and for a city car all of that does not matter. In fact I am thinking of buying the skoda version. Fits my profile perfectly. I always take the train for longer trips anyways.

The substation has two transformers for 66kV down to 22 or 11kV for more local distribution stations, like to the smaller substations near the chargers where it again is stepped down to 400V. openinframap.org/#13.59/60.53881/8.22726

These kinds of EV's really just make sense for people who never use more than the battery range at once, nobody wants to wait half an hour to charge 40% in any circumstance.... most of these cars that are sold will only be charged with destination chargers I think
@robduncan599
@robduncan599 4 жыл бұрын
I have no experience with EV , but I disagree with you . I think people that buy this small city type car , will not be making regular long journeys, so they ,(I know I would ) would most likely welcome a toilet and eating break . And people with this type or small car are more likely to be careful/ slow drivers not so much in a hurry so topping up every 1.5 -2 hours , I dont think most people would mind . Also I think a lot of people that buy this car would be inclined towards hypermiling, or at least driving carefully and taking advantage of drafting when pos . I drive like this in my citroen berlingo 1.6 diesel. I can see this EV would compel most of us towards hypermiling.

As a Brit, I can say that this size of car with this range is ideal for us here in the UK. I imagine that in France, Germany or Spain it'd be significantly less appealing. I can cover most of the south of Britain with this range and the longer journeys that would require charging would be planned around mealtimes in order to make waiting for it to charge less tedious.

my ZE40 is also slow at charging at cold temperatures...which is probably what bugs me the most about the R90 ZE40. Getting "only" 22kW through AC is slow enough but no, it can make it even slower down to 7 something, even if well below 80% SoC. Seems like the new Up! falls into the same category with a slight advantage in some situations.
@taztaz79
@taztaz79 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. I was charging my R90 ZE40 today.. Battery was 5C when i started charging.. Charging started at 22kW but went fast down.. When coming back to the car i was getting 8kW (20min later) my range when leaving was 110km so far away from full.. Think i was at 45% SOC when i was leaving. Good thing though is that R90 has battery heater/cooler and that helps a bit.. It will start if the battery is 8C or colder (or maybe 9C?) ..
@siraff4461
@siraff4461 4 жыл бұрын
Use a lot of heater and drive it a bit less sympathetically. You will use more battery doing so but it also keeps the battery warmer which means 22kW all the time.

VW probably deliberately limited the DC speed in BMS so they can live up to their "8 yr battery guarantee". I think they are afraid city ppl without home/public charging will use DC a lot/or only (without active cooling) . And then VW needs to pay for a new battery in a couple of years. Of course since this is the eGolf pack and old 18kw Up charged at 40kw continuous, this one should be able to as well! They could have set a DC charge limit like Tesla before limiting speed, but they probably don't want to deal with "I feel betrayed now my car charges slower" customers after the Diesel scandal, or make complex explanation in the manual about a DC limit. Tesla customers are more forgiving.

This is like a very inefficient Chevy Spark EV. 2/3rd efficiency and 2/3rd charging speed.

The last 2% comes from the German wind turbines :D we export so much electricity to all our European neighbors. Norway, Switzerland and Austria are alle used as a battery thanks to their large amount of pumped storage :)

Not all, Czech Republic exports a lot and France also and in few years after you close nuclear power plants you gonna be buying electricity.

Pavel 49 Nope, quite the opposite . France is exporting less and less (less than Germany) while Germany is exporting more and more. Don’t be surprised when France gets into serious supply trouble this decade.

Pavel 49 Celebrate of course! Then curse because we’ll have to foot the nuclear waste clean-up bill. All the while enjoying that clean solar and wind power, naturally 😎

Bjorn this video is full of rubbish! First #VW half hearted attempt at making an #EV and then you eating junk food ! Try the Ketogenic or even better the #Carnivore diet ! You won't feel hungry and not need so many comfort breaks ! Otherwise, keep up the good work!
