Jan-Ove Waldner wins the 1996 European Singles Table Tennis Championships. He beat Persson in the final. It was the only European singles title Waldner ever won.

The ball control and precision shown by Waldner is what makes him so great. Hardly ever do you see players today hit shots that precise and unpredictable. Persson hustled and deserves credit for staying the game, but it seemed like he just wasn't aggressive enough.

No mercy! Eventually he won even the European champs, but it took another 14 years after his first close attempt in 1982. 1996 was a strong year in general for Waldner. He won the national champs and Top 12 as well. Lost to Jörgen in the SF in SOC.

The only thing that calls my attention is the possibility of the ball touching Waldners t-shirt under his left arm when he served but you can not see it clearly in the video. Anyway I think that Persson's complaint came too late, he lost the point and then he lodged a complaint for Waldner´s service, what would happened if he had won the point; would he had done it? Waldner's next service on purpose to give Persson the point he claims for to finish their discussion is rather fair play to me.

Persson has a slight lifetime edge over Waldner - they played so many games against each other are so familiar with each other and the one in form on the day tends to win

Why are u digging on Waldner? Have u won anything in your life mate? Also, he lost to huang in 96 olimpics, but name me the player who has not lost a match in its lifetime? Just to remind you, Jan Ove was in the final of ECH 1982 against Appelgren at the age of 16...and then he was there in the final again in 1994, before he won in 1996. But, u are probably one of those who try to find weaknesses of Waldis carrier... It will not change one thing, he is regarded as The Greatest of table tennis... The Mozart of Table Tennis And u cant take anything of his achivements regardless of what u say.

Waldner typically plays more in the team competition which favors his team mates (3-0 Person 1991 Worlds?) when they play him in singles but in this tournament I think, singles and Teams were seperate.

Here is my conspiracy theory: 1- Waldner and Persson are friends and teammates. 2- Waldner won the 1989 World Championship so in the next Championship in 1991 when he was in the final against Persson, then he let Persson win so both could have the experience of being world champions. 3- Persson having won the European Championship in 1986 and Waldner having not won it yet, then in the 1996 final Persson returned the favor by letting Waldner win the European Championship. 4- Now Waldner and Persson are Champions of both big tournaments. 5- These two people are generous and fair.

It could have happened but im doubtful... When u see the 91's final, u would realize that waldi wasnt at his best and Jorgen was on the top of Waldi all the time, was more aggresive, and jan made fare too many mistakes In Bratislava, when i wittness the final on my own, Waldi was more aggresive and smarter, more precise , thats why he won. And, of course, one cant dissmiss your theory , i find it highly unlikely to be the case. And lastly, both players have spoken about 89, and 91 champs and looks like there was real rivalry between them two all the time Thats only my opinion Stay safe my friend

@@janovewaldner1 Persson wasn't really dominant in the mid 90's and Waldner had a good record against him even before his accident. He was 5-0 against at the Europe top12 and 4-2 at the Swedish Championship.Persson's peak was 1989-1991 and his prime 1987-1993.He got married in 1992,had a serious car accident in early 1994 and his career took a huge slump.
