This has to be one of the best concepts for a simple winter survival shelter. It's the "Super Shelter" developed by the late, great Mors Kochanski. Although it was only about -7 during the night, this shelter will keep you quite cozy in the -20s when you have a long fire in front.
The concept is to build up a bed base at least to sitting height. Ideally, the bed frame should be moveable using long logs on the bottom and stacking them up so that you can pick it up and move it if needed. Then weave a half-dome frame that is attached to the bed. Place some mylar towards the back to reflect heat from the fire, cover with a breathable fabric (parachute works best but you can use a simple bed sheet), then cover that with some plastic to encompass the whole shelter. Oh, and I made a couple of bushcraft nature clips to clip the fabric to the frame.
Leave an air space in the back for air exchange. The weaved frame should be protruding beyond the front of the bed so that when you close the plastic, the plastic is actually angled inward. This way, any sparks from the fire will bounce off and fall to the ground (the plastic should be rolled in a log in the inside of the shelter.
I made a bit of extra room in the back so I could place my back pack.
I had closed the shelter for about 10 minutes in about -2 C and the interior was about 8 C. I should be a bit closer to the fire but I had used my existing bed which was fixed (staked) to the ground so it was a bit further than I wanted. It was around -7 C through the night and the interior was still at least 4C when I woke up in the morning without a fire. I had slept so comfortably that I didn't bother getting up in the night to keep the long fire going.
My meal was rosemary, garlic rubbed lollipop lamb chops (lollipop because you can eat them like a lollipop holding on to the bone) with a greek salad. It was delicious cooked directly on the coals! I also made a nice warming mulled wine to enjoy for the evening!
I hope you enjoyed watching!
