Your art is amazing! I really like your style, it's quite unique. I have one question about colouring process. What paper do you use? Every time I'm trying to color something in watercolours, the paper (250 g/m2) is rolling quite fast and even after ironing it doesn't look too good. Anyways, amazing job, please keep up your great work!
@wrennowan704
@wrennowan704 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The key to keeping your watercolor paper smooth is not to let it roll. I either buy watercolor paper that is glued together in blocks, so you have to cut the watercolor paper off the block when you are done, or if I am working with a sheet of watercolor paper, I tape the edges down to a stiff piece of wood or a drawing board The paper may wrinkle a bit when you are doing very wet washes, but it dries out flat again. Good luck! Wren

Hi Wren. Your style looks great. Can I ask what kind of paper you use here? And how do you prevent it from warping when you use water colour? Also do you ever have issues with the ink running when you water colour over them?

WOW our work is amazing, the paper you use what size is it and is it rough or smooth ? Also what ink do you use /Its mind boggling watching you ink with that pen..
@wrennowan704
@wrennowan704 6 жыл бұрын
I am glad you enjoy watching the process. The paper is 140 lb watercolor paper. It is pretty rough, but that is good because the in comes out much better on the rough paper. It flows too quickly on smooth paper. I also use Dr. Martins ink. It is a thick consistency and flows just right. I tried Higgins inks but they are too runny.

Thanks for watching. I use Adobe Illustrator for boarders, text and bubbles. I can export the illustrator layers back into photoshop an I end up giving my editor the final as a photoshop file with the painting as the main layer, boarders, bubbles and text on their own layer. That way they can easily do the translated versions if my text is on its own layer.

I've always been too concerned about my nib not faring well on cold pressed paper because of the tooth. Do you have to change your nibs often?
@wrennowan704
@wrennowan704 6 жыл бұрын
Most of the nibs I work with get better with time, not sure why. I use some nibs for up to a year without changing them. The ink is also really important. I find that Higgans ink is too runny and flows to quickly from the nib. Dr. Martins ink is my favorite. Thanks for stopping by. Wren

I wish My comic storylines is good. Can you do a tutorial how to make a good storyline.
@wrennowan704
@wrennowan704 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Velmar, Thank you for reaching out and I appreciate you spending time to check out my work. Your suggestion is a good one. All the pretty pictures in the world are for nothing if they don't contribute to a good story. I will get around to discussing how I arrive at my stories. One thing I will say, and this may not be too helpful, is that there is a lot be said about living enough of life to know what makes a story. For people to connect to a work of art, it has to be sincere and speak to them about the human experience. When I was in my early twenties, I always wanted to create some awesome, moving story, but it was really hard because I just hadn't lived enough life yet. Now that I've been married, divorced, raised kids, struggled - all that translates into what I say and how I say it. I know that sounds odd coming from a guy who does comics, which are often disposable stories written for 14 year old boys. If you want your stories to be more than disposable, if you want your comic to be collected and cherished by your readers, then you have to put your whole self into it, everything you know about relationships, tension, fear. What brings you the most joy? What crushes you? I know this is a very long winded response. I believe every person has a unique perspective worth exploring, and a unique voice that should be heard. Even when I was too young to really be able to tell a good story, that didn't stop me from honing my craft, refining my drawing skills, practicing dialogue and listening to what people say and how they say it. Sometimes there are great stories around you, you just need to listen. Anyway, thank you for the suggestion, and I will post something about story structure. Wren
