Hi Wren I would like to know what ink you are using before painting. I have been having trouble having my fountain pen ink bleed when painting over it. Great work Wren. You are inspiring.

Hello there, I also prefer doing it the old school way like you do, however, I've ran into some trouble with the coloring, specifically. I cannot seem to find watercolors that would not cover the ink itself. Are all colors of your Daniel Smith set transparent, or are some of them opaque?

Fantastic work .... I was wondering what kind of ink do you use that doesn’t mix with watercolor when it comes as next step to finish your work because all the ink I use is not like that I have to use colors then ink as the final step of process I mean coloring comes after the sketching then inking as the final step. Best regards

I am glad you enjoy the videos. I have tried to ink on top of watercolor and it is just not the same. Something happens to the paper after it gets the watercolor pigment and the ink tends to bleed a lot more and it is hard to control. If you can figure out how to do it, I am very impressed. Wren

Amazing work. Is this cold press paper? I recently bought 140 weight cold press and can not achieve the light washes. The paper frays a bit and leaves a nasty texture.

Hi, Yes, this is 140lb cold press. I am not sure which brand you are using, but try Arches. The surface is pretty durable. The one thing you need to be careful with is erasing, because that chews up the surface. I change pencil work with a gum eraser, pressing it down and picking up the graphite. Try not to rub the paper. Good luck!

Wren Nowan I will pick up archers brand. Also I was using a white plastic eraser and a water brush with those synthetic bristles, maybe too coarse. Thank you for the response! I love your work

Would you ever consider doing an Illustrator tutorial on how you did those word bubbles and boarders? I really want to make my own comic but figuring out that kind of thing is proving iffy.

Great to hear from you, and thanks for asking. Now that you mention it, I am about to hand letter and bubble my new story, but I will do a video about how I did it digitally before and how I plan to hand letter and bubble now. I use illustrator and photoshop for my lettering. I hope you have both those programs.

Thanks for the videos, the art looks fantastic. Hand lettering would make it even better, the bubbles would be in your own style instead of the generic illustrator oval. The lettering could be on an overlay and dropped in in photoshop or illustrator, similar to what you do now. It would really tie everything in, and you definitely have the ability to hand letter. Keep 'em coming.

So amazing to see the different stages of the art! Thank you for sharing, this is incredible. I'm starting to work on a comic and it's very helpful to see someone else's process. One question, if you have time: do you have any advice on how to keep colors consistent throughout the whole story? For example, if you draw the character in the green jacket later in the story, how do you make sure the color if his jacket matches the one from before? Is it just a matter of accurately mixing your colors to match what you painted before?

That is a great question, and I have not done a great job of keeping colors consistent. One method I tried was to mix up a big batch of a recurring color and just keep it in a jar. What I have been doing lately is painting out a swatch page of all my important colors and noting on each square the colors I used to create that color. Good luck on your comic! Wren

After you put the speech bubbles in digitally do you then print off the entire page..? And if so what paper do you print onto that gives good enough results to turn into a comic etc ?Beautiful illustrations, great work

Thanks for stopping by. Yes I do add all text bubbles digitally. When I want to print out a finished page they usually print nicely on inkjet printers printing on heavy weight presentation paper. Good luck with your work.

What does it mean " old school"? Is it because you don't use computer?

Yes, "old school" refers to the traditional medium that I use, pen and ink and watercolor. There is a lot of beautiful digital work being done, I just enjoy the non-digital approach. Wren
