FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock was already famous as the screen's master of suspense (and perhaps the best-known film director in the world) when he released Psycho and forever changed the shape and tone of the screen thriller. From its first scene, in which an unmarried couple balances pleasure and guilt in a lunchtime liaison in a cheap hotel (hardly a common moment in a major studio film in 1960), Psycho announced that it was taking the audience to places it had never been before, and on that score what followed would hardly disappoint. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is unhappy in her job at a Phoenix, Arizona real estate office and frustrated in her romance with hardware store manager Sam Loomis (John Gavin). One afternoon, Marion is given $40,000 in cash to be deposited in the bank. Minutes later, impulse has taken over and Marion takes off with the cash, hoping to leave Phoenix for good and start a new life with her purloined nest egg. 36 hours later, paranoia and exhaustion have started to set in, and Marion decides to stop for the night at the Bates Motel, where nervous but personable innkeeper Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) cheerfully mentions that she's the first guest in weeks, before he regales her with curious stories about his mother. There's hardly a film fan alive who doesn't know what happens next, but while the shower scene is justifiably the film's most famous sequence, there are dozens of memorable bits throughout this film. The first of a handful of sequels followed in 1983, while Gus Van Sant's controversial remake, starring Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche, appeared in 1998.

Abraham Lincoln I know, it's great. Hitchcock tried to trick audiences into believing the movie was about Janet Leigh's character because she was a huge star at the time. When I first saw the movie, I assumed the title _Psycho_ was an exaggerated reference to Marion Crane temporarily going a little crazy when she makes the decision to steal the $40,000. I thought the movie would be some kind of chase/crime drama about a woman falling further into darkness while at the same time trying to regain her sanity after committing a crime that's eating away at her conscience. I thought the bit with Norman Bates at the motel was a tiny subplot that would end quickly. It wasn't until I heard Mother's voice that I knew something else was going on here. Then after Crane was murdered, the focus shifted and it was slowly revealed that the story was not about her, it's about _him_. Great movie.

I love that Hitchcock chose Anthony Perkins to be the Psycho. He wasn't like the typical crazy, ugly movie murderer. He's so damn beautiful. It screws with your emotions and perception of what's actually going on. I think that's what makes it so memorable. Just brilliant.

+mousehead2000 Actually, the first time you see it you think he is covering up for the mother. So you really do not think it is him that he is that bad. Nothing like the first time you view Psycho. Still a great film but once you know the end not quite the same.

+AmericanGraffiti Begins He wasn't even nominated? I think it was because he was just too damn good. Before Psycho, horror movies were almost always about the supernatural. But Perkins scares us in a way not even Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing could do. And he doesn't ham it up, like Anthony Hopkins did thirty years later in The Silence Of The Lambs (which he won an Oscar for). Perkins' performance is subtle and understated, but utterly sinister.

For my money, THIS is the most terrifying scene in the movie. Norman is so _intense_ that even though he hasn't done anything bad to Marion yet, she finds herself oddly terrified by him. He is an actual human being giving off serious Uncanny Valley vibes, almost like a robot doing its best impression of a human. Anthony Perkins was brilliant.

i don't think 'oddly terrified of him' is an accurate description here as he is acting quite intimidating so she's naturally terrified and feels unsettled by his manner and tone. Any person-particulary a woman on her own would feel terrified here. She is a defenseless woman too and he is a 6 foot man- much bigger and stronger so he could easily overpower her.

Shane Folan I think you’re focusing too much on Norman’s physical attributes. The tension in this scene doesn’t come from the notion that Norman could overpower Vivian, or that he’s especially strong. It comes from how he goes from calm, relaxed and personable to intense, accusatory and defensive within seconds, and all without raising his voice or taking his eyes off her. I love the subtle expression change 0:25 you can see fear come across Vivian’s face and she realises that something is very off about Norman.

Anthony Perkins was perfect for this role. He's handsome in an unremarkable way, shyly charming, disarmingly polite, with a dark side. He almost seems to make Norman Bates a fictional version of Ted Bundy, years before Bundy even existed.

Funny enough, the description of Norman in the Novel doesn't match the movie at all. I like the movie version better though, he's a lot more unassuming.

It's been said that when the Oscar nominations were announced early in 1961 and Anthony Perkins was snubbed in the Best Actor category for Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock called Perkins on the phone and told him that the Academy had robbed him and disgraced themselves.

+Courtney Cook I don't think it would have been better in colour. It was shot and lit for black and white. Of course this was partly due to budget constraints but his use of black and white and his TV crew gave the film a very stylistic look and feel that just wouldn't have been the same with colour. In fact, I doubt the film would have even been made (or at the very least, it would have been a lot different) if it was shot in colour. One of the reasons he chose to shoot in black and white was so the shower scene wouldn't be too gory for the studio and censors. The studio didn't even want him to make the film in the first place but of course Hitchcock was a master and did it anyway. He pulled it off in an incredible way partly due to it being in black and white. Bit of a ramble this was, eh?

When you realize in Bates Motel Norma says "these places can help" in reference to an institution she was looking to put Norman in. He says "Places?!" In this clip at about 30 seconds in he gets all weird about her calling it "Some place" and says "people always call a mad house some place". Attention to detail is great in that show.

What I really love about Anthony Perkins is he's one of the few people that really makes his character almost too "real" for comfort. He did such an amazing job, and I really love it all. What I really love more than anything is the subtle little twitches you can see his face barely make. It really adds a lot to the character.

My favorite scene in the film. Anthony Perkins switches back and forth from harmless to menacing several times within a few minutes so subtly, it's incredible.

Now I have noticed that Norman's personality changes a long with his tone as he comes closer to the camera. It might imply that he had a temperate and a bipolar disorder before he killed his mother making Norman all the more scary.

I have the dvd....Have watched this movie many times. Absolutely brilliant...and you're right. The way his expression changes...in pretty much every scene but in this one especially....shows how his mind is conflicted by his thoughts and those of what he believes to be his mother. Incredibly skillful acting.

Though of course this is just pure speculation. • Antisocial Personality Disorder • Bipolar Disorder • Schizophrenia • Multiple Personality Disorder • Dissociative Disorder

I don’t usually admire English for how it sounds, but there’s just something about the way this line sounds, or maybe it just how Perkins delivers it. Anyway, wonderful performance on his part. I watched the movies up to 3, and he didn’t lose a single bit of what made the character great and genuinely scary even though 3 was honestly just a total mess. Anyway, I love this scene a lot. Probably my favorite in the whole movie.

I'm currently reading the book and the original line is "we all go a little crazy sometimes." The change from "crazy" to "mad" just makes it scarier. Mad makes it feel like she goes on a rampage and loses it. Crazy feels like a way to describe a self tortured person.

This scene is so brilliantly scary. That line, "We all go a little mad sometimes." And the way he gives that smile right after he says that. "Haven't you?" And she's probably thinking yes, since she took off with the money, and is paranoid about people following her, and knowing about it, but she is so unaware that the man talking to her is even madder than she is. You can already tell she is a little unnerved by his presence and the way that he talks to her, and sets things up. This is one of my favorite quotes of all time. Truly scary, but truly real, because the fact is that it is actually *real.* We all do go a little mad sometimes. It's just that when Norman says it, it is so scarily ironic, because he is truly one of the maddest movie characters ever made. 😠😱😱😱😱😲😲

I took Film Study a while back. The way you know it's MOTHER is when he's standing tall, confident and upward. She goes back to NORMAN when calmly going back to his seat in his relaxed manner

you are correct...norman wants to be free and live like everyone else but same time like we saw on this clip he want back that old mother what was good and innocent but mother side wants to keep norman locked in that hotel and away from "filthy" girls by any costs...mother's physical form is dead but she lives inside normans head...i truly believes norman is not schizoprenic after all by that sence schizoprenia should be...this thing is more like spiritual possessing...or atleast i like to think it is.

The Academy considered this a cheap, horror film of little artistic merit back then. Some people considered it disgusting and deplorable because it was full of "unlikeable people". I'm going to give you some advice. When you view something from a historic point of view try informing yourself of the culture and mindset at the time it was released in not something which is commonplace and "normal" half a century later.

I always felt and say that Anthony Perkins' acting here is so ahead of it's time that even to this day, you still see some antagonists in psychological horror films follow or somewhat incorporate some of his way of acting here. Truly remarkable! 💯 The fact that the Academy didn't acknowledge Perkins' performance here clearly tells you that they weren't ready for such kind of acting.

Man what an actor.. In this scene you can really dig all his frustration for the insane relationship of hate n love between him and his mother. And after the storm in his mind for her phrase suddenly he calms down like never happened. This charachter belongs just to him. No contest even if i really liked vince vaughn and the kid of bates motel

I have never seen this movie but this clip alone makes me want to watch it so badly. The Psycho (I think that's who the man is) is portrayed so beautifully, it's haunting. You're not sure whether or not you want to be on his side, he's seems so dangerous but so intriguing, you can see exactly how his mind works, but maybe it's only how he wants you to see his mind. "We all go a little mad sometimes... haven't you?" I'm in awe.
