WE DIDN'T MILK OUR COW FOR 2 MONTHS... WHAT HAPPENED TO HER MILK PRODUCTION?

6 жыл бұрын

We moved 2 months ago to our new homestead. We brought our cows with us, but because we have been so busy we have not milked Ladybug at all for the last 2 months.
Luna our Calf has been "on" ladybug this entire time, milking her for us. We use the calf sharing method with our cows so that we have the ability to not milk everyday. We were not sure what 2 months of NO MILKING would do to her production.
Today we milk her for the first time. Let's see what happens.

The babies have to be separated from the mother so we can have the milk instead of the baby. If that isnt abuse then I don’t know what is.

Now that’s how all cows should be treated. Edit: I meant it in a good way oml. I’m just glad the cows aren’t in those factorys. And the girl is gentle and not rough towards the cows. That’s what matters, that the cows have a good life.

If the dairy industry did this, the prices would shoot sky high, there wouldn't be nearly enough sales, the companies would go out of business and the cows would be turned into delicious steaks and hamburgers. Is that really what you wish?

What a abuse are you referring to? There is so much misinformation out there. You really should visit a farm yourself before you make judgements. Our herd was our livelihood, and we took care of them. Me very cow had a name and we knew the history of every cow, and their quirks. Each cow is different.

Robert Heinkel I’m talking about the industries who lock their cows in between bars and make their utters sore by the machines they put around them. The industries that get their cows pregnant to make more milk then they rip the mother and calf apart immediately or end up killing it. Those are the types that I’m disgusted by.
@benth162
@benth162 5 жыл бұрын
Honey, you really do need to get a grip on reality. By the way Rebecca just how old are you? Robert is correct. Also, stop with your Anthropomorphism. (look it up). AND NO, they don't rip the calf away from the mother because the calf does need mother's first milk which is call Colostrum and has all the antigens and antibodies the calf needs to get its immune system up and running and humming along. No the machines and the metal bars do not hurt or harm them. Do as Robert suggested and go to a dairy and ask when they are milking to put your finger in one the suction cups to feel what the cow feels when it is attached to its tit. It is a soft pulsating sensation from the pulsator, and it sucks to your finger by the vacuum from other machines. Yes there are some people who treat cow badly, but they are far and few between. Some cows such as Jersey need to be disciplined when they are young because they can be cantankerous on their first milking. I have seen one man just about have the "S"it kicked out of him by an angry Jersey, who, by the way are actually one of the shortest breeds but with the best high fat milk. I believe the cow in this video is a Guernsey.

My Great Aunt and Uncle would go to friends of theirs on the edge of town who had two cows that they milked. They would buy a 2 two gallon jugs of milk from them every week or so, and separate the cream out themselves. My Aunt made her own butter, buttermilk, and we always had cream for strawberry short cake and black berry cobbler. They also used it in their coffee. They also had friends who ran a lot of chickens, and they went and bought their eggs from them. Huge 30 egg flats. We always had enough to eat. The had an acre garden behind the house. They only bought coffee, bacon, bread, sugar, flour, baking soda and powder, salt, pepper, soda crackers, and any other pork that they consumed. Which wasn't much. That's how old farmers lived. They were both in their 80s when I was a kid. I still miss them.

Becky.....actually.....grain feeding for calves was something that my Great Uncle did, but his grain was nothing but cracked corn. Today it's all pellets that have been infused with antibiotics, hormones and a host of other chemicals that are starting to show up in our kids making them fertile, and little girls producing breasts, way too young. Grain fed beef is the ideal as long as the grass is natural, and not specially planted. And did you know that cows shouldn't look fat? They should be well filled out, but not fat. A cow was only fattened up for slaughter. My uncle grass fed most of his Black Angus, and always had good resale when he needed to. He had a huge Hereford bull, called Lucky Sunday, and with that produced a very large well fed calf every year for sale as steers. Hey..as a farmer you have to get used to the idea that what you are raising is going to be eaten. Including the heifer we kept in the paddock and called Tinker Bell every summer. We ate the Tinker Bell from the year before even as we were petting, special feeding with table scraps, the current one. That's the way life was. Still is if you want to get down to brass tacks. My family had been out on the farm since 1832.

Actually Brian, that's not exactly right. A calf's *rumen* doesn't fully mature until the calf is at least 3 months old. (The rest of the digestive tract is already mature by the time the calf is born. But the rumen? In a newborn calf, it's barely the size of a pea!) Between the time that it starts eating grass, hay, grain, sampling what momma's eating, the calf is still pretty young, by around two or three weeks old. By the time it's a month or so, it's starting eat more feed and forage, but still needing momma's milk. All that eating other things besides the milk helps the calf's rumen develop over time, until it's mature by around, typically, 3 months of age. A study was done to test what feeds were best to help develop a calf's rumen, and it turned out milk was the least favourable compared with grain and hay, with grain being the most favourable in the study. So, even when a calf isn't weaned until it's 6 or 8 or even 10 months old, the milk is only acting as an extra source of nutrients for more weight gain, growth, and the like for that calf. Between 3 months of age, and say, 10 months, the calf could be weaned at any time. The *biggest* factor beyond that 3 month-old age limit to determine when is best to wean the calf is actually the cow herself: "Is the calf 'pulling down' the cow?" "Is she losing body condition by continuing to provide milk for her calf, when the calf could be weaned so that she can then focus on herself without also having to have her body convert what she eats into milk for her calf?" I've no doubt that Luna's rumen is already fully mature. She could be weaned at any time, because she's ready to be on "full feed" and no more milk. But, since it's not any of our decisions (naturally), and Ladybug is still in great condition, Luna could be on for as long as Aust and K need/want her to be on. Sorry for the long-winded reply. :)

Most people who are lactose intolerant can drink Raw ( unpasteurized) milk. Pasteurization destroys the Lactase making the milk i digestible to those with an intolerance to lactose. Lactose pills are putting back that past of what the heat of pasteurization destroyed.

Not sure if you're familiar with this. I used to bathe my horses the usual way, but then rinse them with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar, which is a smell that all flying insects absolutely despise. Really works to keep yeast and fungii under control on the skin. Putting a little apple cider vinegar in the drinking water also helps change blood chemistry to repel the pesky critters too and will purge intestinal parasites. When the flies get really bad during the hottest months, you can use a hose end sprayer ($7.95 at Wal-Mart) to wash down the walls of the milking parlor with the same 50/50 mix of water and vinegar. The smell lasts until all the liquid evaporates (about an hour) and should make the chore more comfortable for you. Ladybug has Ingrid Bergman eyes.

3:23 that was magic!! Woah! She dumped the bucket and I saw nothing come out then a second later the feeder is full of grain! Btw I really like what you do, this how cows were supposed to be treated. Living in a grass field, raising their calf and being milked by hand. It’s sad what the worldhas done to them... female cows are locked in muddy, poor conditions eating all day and hooked up to metal machines to take the milk. When they have calf’s they don’t even save milk for them or get to raise it because male calf are taken away to be slaughtered or female calf are taken away to become another steak or milk provider. It’s so sad. Thank you for treating your animals with some respect. I really appreciate that!

Yeah--I noticed that right away. In a previous comment, Homesteady responded that they had edited the glove change out. Based on a lot of the grossed-out comments, it is almost guaranteed that if they ever show something similar again, that they will leave it in! It was probably such an automatic thing to change the gloves, that they didn't even think about it.

Great video! 2 questions: 1. What have you been drinking for milk the past 2 months? Store purchased milk or did you purchase raw from a local farm? I am curious if there are any digestion issues alternating between pasturized and raw? 2. How long can you keep raw cow's milk in the fridge? I really enjoy your videos! I have been milking a Nubian goat since she freshened in March and I love it! She gives us about 2 quarts of milk per day. I am seriously considering adding a dairy cow to our homestead in the future - your vlog has been very educational! #askhomesteady

stacey gresbach after milking the cow/goat everyone at the countryside I know is boiling the milk. After that it's good to drink.
