fun little detail that commonly goes missed: if you go back to the episode where Gaeta programmed the network firewall to jump back and calculate and jump to the fleet's real position, there is a split second frame shown of his computer monitor, after he pulls the connection, that shows the Cylon hack/virus attack actually breached the final firewall at the VERY last second! :D such amazing tiny details!!

Mary McDonnell (President Roslin) was apparently fighting a massive fit of the giggles during the commissioning scene of the Blackbird, and improvised the "smash the champagne bottle" bit to cover it. Since that was a real glass bottle rather than sugar glass, the concern from the other actors is genuine, and worked so well they left it in. In fairness, no-one had told her that they were going to name the plane "Laura" beforehand, so that reaction of her being so touched was also genuine (and heralding the start of her giggle fit) (as for why their characters would be concerned- the thing was a performance machine, but the hull was only carbon fibre [pretty much] over a tube steel frame. That bottle would break the brand new plane's skin, and potentially do some serious damage to the innards, and they only just built it...)

I LOVE that they named the ship Laura, and I love Laura's reaction to it. So sweet, and she needed that so much. But my favorite thing this episode is how Chief keeps coming at Helo and Helo's just like "Hey, are you ok? I'm sorry" 😂 Helo is too pure for this world.

It's weird though. To most of these people, Roslyn is a distant figure they've had no interaction with. The *show* knows she's an important main character, but these people wouldn't. If anything, I think they're likely to look at her with animosity as a vestige of the final government of the colonies that led them to their destruction.
@screamr2d2
@screamr2d2 Ай бұрын
@@silikon2 that's a negative take. Everyone knows who she is- a school teacher who had this job thrust upon her in a time of unimaginable crisis. She's handled the job with grace and with the fleet's best interests at heart. And many of them, if nothing else, see her through the lens of the old man. The Chief knows her. It's his ship. A lot of the people who worked on the blackbird have met her personally. Have witnessed her character. In the show's world, it makes perfect sense that they would honor her that way. Hell, in our world if we were cut down to less than 50,000 people and we had a president as characteristically decent as she is leading us, somebody would no doubt name something after that president. Even a stealth ship.

Thanks for watching BSG! 22 Years later and I still think this is one of the very best sci-fi series ever made. Equaled ( if not surpassed) by The Expanse. There is a very, very deep exploration of the reality of what it means to be human that is a recurring thread throughout the show. This was a real rarity in the 2000's. No wonder BSG won a Peabody Award.

The type of pipes used in the incidental music for the show are uilleann pipes. They're a bagpipe of Irish origin, but they've also found their way into Scottish music as well. Rather than using breath to pressurise the bag, as is done with the more familiar great highland pipes, they use bellows which are pumped by the right arm (Northumbrian smallpipes work the same way). The instrument can be seen here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hppgjLKGnc3Lep8.html

For the movie Kubo of the 2 Strings (a superb stop motion animated feature (worthy of a reaction)) Matthew McConaughey and the director were trying to get his voice to have particular quality/timbre. That discussion about beauty standards goes for women as well. I've been recently diving into that hole of 20 somethings doing botox and ending up looking like 40 somethings as a result. Body dismorphia is a hell of a thing. Don't expect to look like movie stars. They are specificially chosen and in part train themselves to look like the ideal archetype for a male or a female. You don't have to. Sure beauty privelege is a thing, but don't concentrate on it too much. It's all fleeting anyway.

Another great reaction girls! It was nice to have a bit of a 'lighter' tone to the episode - the Stealth ship bringing the crew together & the visible joy (for want of a better word!) in the pilots when Sharon essentially 'turns off' the Cylon attack fleet brings a smile, but the most heartwarming moment is the ships naming ceremony - proper lump-in-the-throat moment! Enjoy what this episode brings as without saying anything spoiler-y, the next episode is a tough watch (although it sounds from your thoughts after the episode that you're kinda aware of this?) - all I'll say is brace yourselves!

The actor who plays Chief Tyrol originally didn't expect much from the role, thinking he would be a background character like Sulu or Checkov from the original Star Trek. But then when he got scripts, he was amazed that episode after episode, they kept writing so much great material for him. This episode in particular blew him away, as he now sometimes referrs to "Flight of the Phoenix" as "The Chief Tyrol episode".

The problem with these 'light' episodes is, you KNOW something dark is coming soon!! Funny enough, "The Closer" and "Major Crimes" (Mary McDonnell's show after this) had the same pattern. Look Out!! One of the things I love is haw shows like this examine prejudice of all types; you can easily replace the Cylon in "Cylon Lover" with many demeaning names we all know and it hits the same. I was never daunted by the grimness and the nastiness in Battlestar Galactica, and it was the only series I have seen where if you see one episode there is a strong urge to see another immediately afterwards! Perhaps its grimmer by American TV series standards. Mind you I live in the UK and really good UK TV series are a lot more grittier and grimmer than their American counterparts- and Battlestar Galactica is positively light compared to certain UK TV series (Line of Duty, Prime Suspect, A Touch of Frost, etc.). Also, for BSG, keep paying attention to the human attitudes towards the Cylons and the attitudes of the Galactica's crew about having a Cylon live among them- it's a subtle thing but I think the racism and hostility between humans and Cylons is one of the show's strongest features. It has fascinating commentary about actual racism and bigotry that range from the overt to the subtle.

One of the frustrating things about BSG reactions is that the how compels you to speculate on who is a cylon, and since I already know I can't point out things from past episodes you may have missed in your analysis. Guessing at who was a cylon was the major source of entertainment for fans on the messageboard back in the day. A lot of us discussed this on the internet as the show aired. The problem with using this ability to connect to fiber optic cables, or Cylon strength or survivability in high-pressure water, to detect Cylons is that these test would either kill humans, or a Cylon could fake it. If you try to shove a fiber optic cable into the arm of a Cylon who is trying to hide their Cylon nature, they could simply turn off the port and/or not communicate over it. These tests would all work for a Cylon who is trying to prove that they are a Cylon, but they are useless for identifying Cylons who wish to remain unidentified. The only difference we have learned so far that theoretically could work is that Cylons apparently cannot have children with people who they don't love. In theory, the fleet could require people to have a baby with a stranger in order to prove that they are human. But apparently they are not that desperate to identify Cylons.

Makes my BSG heart oddly happy to see the both of you so emotionally invested in these characters as I!!! Glad you have warnings for the next episode and yet as triggered or emotional as you may feel, it's in my humble opinion one of the best episodes. I have LOVED Karl Helo Agathon since day one. Looking forward to your upcoming reactions ☺️💚 Thank you.

@Dularr we chose to go with the broadcast version after some careful consideration. One is that having an extended scene of the assault is not something we felt we needed (We are aware there's a couple of other small moments as well). The second reason is that the broadcast version is more easily accessible to others and for our Patreon watch alongs we wanted to make sure and be mindful of that.

Jamie Bamber's (Apollo) body is inspiring to me, as a man, to put in the work and be in shape. It is the type of body men should strive for, not to arouse women, but to show they care about themselves.

Have you guys thought about when you are going to watch Razor? You're an episode or 2 ahead right? There's always a debate about when you should watch it. Broadcast order or timeline order. Every reactor I've seen has done broadcast order and I think it's a massive mistake. By the time you get to when it was broadcast the emotional impact of what it reveals has lessened. You should watch it at the appropriate place in the timeline for maximum effect.

I believe Razor is best to watch after season 3, as so to not make any spoilers.
@rexmundi2986
@rexmundi2986 Ай бұрын
Personally, I think everything should be broadcast order EXCEPT for the Plan, which is extremely underwhelming if you watch after the series, but works great if you watch it after S4E15 or sixteen, I forget what number, but if you've seen the show, you probably know what episode I'm talking about.

Razor not only doesn’t spoil anything, I would argue it sets up the thing you call a spoiler better than season 3 ever did. It hits more as an origin than a post-hoc reveal.

I mean its only unrealistic because most of us are too lazy to put in the effort at the gym. Most people could get in shape or jacked if they put forth a dedicated effort.
@KatAlysha

Getting fit is absolutely a thing people can do, but we're talking about the drastic actions that are taken to make a body look *that* ripped. Hugh Jackman has literally stated he can not shoot scenes like that anymore (along with other actors) because of the grueling, unrealistic process they have to put their bodies through. Even body builders talk about how before a show they have to dehydrate themselves in order to show the bulging veins and muscles, but that is not what they do in their regular day to day.
@rafetizer
@rafetizer Ай бұрын
@@KatAlysha Sure but you can still look ripped if your body fat is kept low. And you can cheat by spritzing yourself down with a water bottle every so often so that you glisten XD
@GuerillaBunny

@@KatAlyshaIt's not even whether you can, or how, but that beauty standards are external and objectifying. It's ignoring the person. Also, "fit" in this sense doesn't automatically mean healthy, nor is it needed to be healthy.

I really enjoy your reactions and commentary but will never get over the need people have to warn you about the content of coming episodes. It robs you and us of your unprepared reaction. If you were watching first run you would never know so these are spoilers just as much as telling you events outright. It’s like getting a weather forecast so that you dress accordingly. I wan’t to see your reaction to the sudden storm.

It’s just utterly ridiculous that people these days feel like they have to desperately explain themselves for liking a hot and attractive body . As if it’s almost a *bad* thing to be fit and healthy. Insanity. 🤦🏻‍♂️
