Doja Cat is so funny to me because I think she resented the fans she got by not being edgy so she felt uncool and she decided to flip it, make her fans seem uncool instead for liking her in the first place, and now she’s doing this shallow dark shit that no one’s really buying

I feel like someone she respected or an alt white guy she was thirsting after called her a pop princess and called out that a lot of her fans were teeny boppers under the age of 15. Probably said she wasn’t really an “artist”. And it stuck with her. So now she’s doing an edgy phase that a few pop artists do after mainstream success to prove something. That she’s deep or something. I guess. It all seems very performative. Next album she’ll have a completely different aesthetic, further solidifying her pop artist status and people will look back at this as her “devil worshipping” phase.

@@CrabQuesadilla keep in mind we’re all entitled to our own opinions, but i do agree, however i think every single woman has a bit of internalized misogyny because of society and history. We are always criticized for being too “sensitive” etc etc. Purposely trying to distance yourself from what is considered normal for a woman is fine if that’s how you want to express yourself/your femininity but with Doja specifically she’s such a “pick me” in the way that she tries to be a contrarian with literally everything i don’t think her shaving her head was to express herself i think it’s another way that, she thinks, makes her better than other women. idk it’s just my opinion, i like frilly girly stuff, i like dark “emo” things as well, i think there’s nothing wrong with being girly or not as i teeter the line myself, i think it’s the intention behind those actions that makes the difference & something about her attitude just gives me the ick. also she’s interacted/dated a few incels if i’m not mistaken? that speaks volumes to me.

It’s just the way a women will act not according to society’s idea of them and how they behave and so they get pegged as a pick me. It’s a quick label to throw on and just shows pretty shallow thinking. Not to mention the amount of careers that’s have been able to be amplified by this new album. She isn’t just getting random people to develop her look and aesthetic. She’s going into creative spaces of people who aren’t aligned with society’s norms and giving them opportunities to show what they can do, on quite frankly every part of this new project. I can guarantee if Doja was a white women doing the same shit she would be championed. But instead everyone is trying to knock the brown girl down for being quirky.

@@notyourplasticdoll sorry I didn’t mean to delete my comment. Thanks for the reply though :) Absolutely agree about over explaining. To paraphrase something Layne Stayley of Alice in Chains said, the thoughts a songwriter has when they write songs are for them … and whatever the listener thinks or feels when they hear it, that’s the right meaning for them. Even if it’s nothing to do with what it was written about. I mean for sure, if it’s meant to have a specific message then that might differ… but having a big fat tantrum because your fans didn’t get your songs, is pathetic. And slagging off fans for being fans is just a bitch move. Like bitch, if you want people to understand your songs, write better. I’m being mean there, I don’t even know the songs that are being referred to. But she is definitely being a megabitch and it’s a low move. She's already made a selling point with "Attention" (which I enjoyed) and her many livestreams going off on "fans" making it clear that she's fed up so can this new content really be construed as a clapback? By telling everyone that her prior songs were just cash grabs and meaningless. Obviously those songs had a lot of meaning to a lot of people. I feel like I can somewhat relate to Doja on an artistic level. I'm an illustrator myself, and I've always identified with spooky and dark themes. However, during my time in university and while freelancing, I frequently found myself creating bright, minimalist, and flat graphics. Surprisingly, these pieces garnered more popularity than my "authentic art style." Over time, more people began associating me exclusively with these bright, nothing like me illustrations, and it reached a point where I started disliking my own art. My artistic persona became so disconnected from my true self, which caused something similar to personal crisis.

Either she’s pretending she doesn’t understand or actually doesn’t understand that when her fans say they love her and wish she’d go back to saying she loves them, they don’t mean literally. “Balut” is cooked fertilized duck egg that’s a very popular dish from the Philippines. It’s very controversial since eggs are almost always eaten unfertilized in other places & it looks pretty disturbing, though my filipina mom said the embryo can’t feel pain when it’s being cooked. Now, I’m very skeptical of the idea of cultural appropriation, but her saying that her song “signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive” rubs me the wrong way. Balut is NOT eaten alive, so her misunderstanding that for no reason feels like she’s just doing it for shock value. Perhaps she just wants to rile up pinoys because she made it seem like they eat live ducklings by her wording? Tbh I have a hunch that she’s trying to emulate Melanie Martinez by drastically changing up her image in her next album with the presence of a lot of non-Christian themes. Melanie’s newest album seems to have a lot of pagan spirituality in it, so maybe Doja’s trying to one up her with using satanic imagery? Some more extreme fans of Mel will say that you’re not a “real fan” if you don’t like her new stuff & Doja might want that kind of exclusivity for herself. I could just be connecting the two in this case because I’m a longtime fan of Melanie who’s stuck around after her style change, but I think it’s weird how some people try to gate-keep her music. Edit: I’m an agnostic witch (still figuring it out) but I’m not a fan of Doja. I just wanted to add that because it was mentioned at the end that other pagans/wiccans/satanists don’t like her either lol

The difference between Melanie and Doja is that with Melanie, you can see that she writes her music from her heart, as cheesy as it sounds, but it's true. You can feel her artistry even in the costume. I felt similar to doja with her previous stuff. I really believed in her versatility and flexibility in music production. Now her stuff is just boring, imo. The lyrics are often about how she is the main bitch, how everyone else is stupid, and just overall flexing material goods as if it's impressive in today's world (consumerism). Someone wrote that her new look reminds them of the "it's not a phase mom!" phase of 16 year olds and I agree, as someone who loves dark and edgy shit.

Lots of artists go through different eras-see how the likes of The Weeknd and Taylor Swift have evolved and changed their sound over time. Yet they have still retained huge fan bases. Hell, The Weeknd character is retiring after his next album, yet the majority of his fan base are excited/here for the change. I feel like no one would have an issue with Doja’s new album/devil era if she hadn’t belittled her audience and showed no respect to her fans in the process. Her behaviour is so entitled and preachy, she’s driving people away then using her loss of audience to say ‘oh they don’t like rap/they don’t like my new sound’ when the reality is it’s her behaviour. And to be frank, she’s not as deep as she thinks she is. (I also think the ‘balut’ post might have been a joke/meme….but no one can tell these days with her)

the fans who would've enjoyed this era have mostly left, me included lol. i don't mind when artists take a change in direction, i listen to a lot of music and i'll get it a fair chance. but when you attack your fans because they raised critique (and lied making it seem like it's about parasocial relationships or complaining about her style) that's a problem. like why lie? idc if you shave your head and go for a gimmicky halloween creepy look. if you switch to all rap. but i don't take disrespect so yeah i don't even bother. and from what i've heard with paint the town red, it sounds just like her older music too. also, i'm really curious with what new fans she is gaining. she might over time. but i don't think there will be any loyalty. so far the only people i see rooting for her are the "anti- woke" movement because she's shifted gears to that. but that can only last so long. she's going to have to completely shift to that essentially or wait for people to forget. but it also depends how forgiving people are to women in media, which isn't much (esp woc). this is all to see years down the line. i feel like she's just very insecure about the pop/tiktok brand she gained, not realizing that was making her one of the biggest stars. which she might not want, so we will see

Doja from what I understand started making music in and around edgy KZfaq, maybe like 2013-2017 ish. She's definitely made stuff before but from what I've heard that's where it started. She initially started out pretty unconventional, a different character, a meme, etc and loved that sorta internet-core thing. She then got her hits around 2019-2020, became more worldwide and radio famous, was probably under stricter mgmt for publicity and public image reasons also hence why she kinda refused a one point to acknowledge her much earlier work while she was in that era of her life. I think this is her lashing out in a way that probably would've been more accepted on reddit, earlier days of KZfaq, earlier online forums etc, places she's come from and maybe can't accept and won't accept that people move on from that stuff. Those who were in that earlier era with her have probably moved on with their lives, aren't as internet focused anymore as most of us aren't. I certainly know I don't identify with who I was when I was younger and what I was liking on sites etc, we move on, we grow up, she very clearly hasn't. She's making a stupid attempt at being edgy in a way everyone knew how to back then as it's what garnered attention, through image. But, her music isn't reflecting it at all ironically, which is what I have an issue with but I don't truly care at the end of the day. If she went onto a more heavy sounding project to match her image or even went back to that edgy internet core stuff, it would make more sense, suddenly image and such wouldn't have to have such a stark difference. But really, at the end of the day, I think she knows with how fast the internet moves now, she's washing up a little and is just trying to stay relevant somehow, just in a very pathetic and childish way ://

I was also strong in my convictions while thinking I was “open minded”. She’s going through what most do and that’s figure herself and life out. These thoughts change all the time. If she wants to alienate here fans while doing so the only one who gets hurt is her. I think similarly about Azalea Banks. She has alienated a lot of people by simply being contradictory in her actions and words. I do wonder about the pressures these women go through. Because in my heart of hearts, I think what I've done is maybe the start of something good, or has potential--and others who decide they "love" a certain way you write or the type of stuff you make sort of hold you back with their expectations, even if they don't mean to. But if I'm being honest, I feel like Doja and many other artists are using a lot creepy/devilish themes lately for no particular reason. Like they just wanna be edgy and shocking. I'm gonna use Lil Nas X for an example because I feel like this recent wave of music with devil themes started after his Montero video. When he used Satanic Imagery/themes it was for a purpose. It was to comment on Christians saying that being gay is a sin etc. But with Doja's new music I don't see the reason for demonic themes. It's like she's using it for the soul purpose of being a rebel.

I'm gonna add this, it's not linked to her behavior directly nor it's a comment of approval/disapproval; I think a "positive" of all of this is that it's a reminder that celebrities are their own people and should not be idealized/idolized. There is a worrying tendency imo to create fandoms that almost worship celebrity X, and I think doja was like a cold shower for a lot of people. Now I'll admit that a lot of her fans were probably very young and a 13 yo idolizing someone famous is nothing new. And I'll also admit if you do all of this by being a massive b1tch to everyone you kinda start losing the "positive" effects of "celebrities are people" and you're starting to pass the message of "doja is mean unlike other celebrities so we should idolize others more!". I hope I made myself clear, but I'm not quite sure about it.

Doja cat is insufferable her and her very creep boyfriend(he didn’t just bully people) are off. But doja has a lot of deep rooted hatred for herself and wants attention but claims she doesn’t. She reminds me of 14 year old going through the growths of life. She dates bad people, says she hates everyone, does questionable things on the internet, makes crappy music, and wants love but the next day tells everyone to leave her alone.

The funny thing is, I didn’t even know who she was until now. I guess I’m way out of step with pop culture. I think there’s a problem with pseudo intellectualism now because being considered learned is somehow negative these days. Educational standards in the US have declined drastically over the years, and I don’t see it getting better anytime soon. So people can’t form cogent arguments and just say whatever 30 second sound bite they can muster. I have no expectation it’ll get better, at least not while we have fascist politicians burning books and removing entire chunks of science and language arts from public schools.
