Huub's Maud, the lemsteraak is really beautiful, as is this episode (again). A few additional details: The way the mainsail is attached to the boom is called "een losse broek" (loose trousers). And the 'aids' at 17:34 are called "kloten" (balls, as in cojones), which Aladino held in admiration... ;-) The lee-boards are called "zijzwaarden" (side-swords). The ones on Maud are actually "zeezwaarden" (sea-boards) as they are long and narrow. Inland boards are normally maybe a little shorter (not necessarily) but surely much wider (twice ore more). Looking forward to your next episode!

17:54 That's my sailboat there in the background! That day in October there were few ships on the water, despite the fact that there was a nice breeze and it only rained for 15 minutes. Like you, I took shelter inside and after you left, I too went sailing again. If I had known you were on board that Lemster barge, I would definitely have come and have a chat, because I'm a big fan of your KZfaq channel! I wish you a safe journey!

I haven't seen one of these leeboards boats for several decades. While sailing a 60 ft schooner in the Virgin Islands, we met 2 men who invited us to sail to St John, Virgin Gorda etc. on their 75 ft x 25 ft Dutch steel sailboat with huge leeboards. It was a beautiful boat, inside and outside. It's sailing abilities couldn't compare to our schooner with a 9 ft draft but what a beautiful liveaboard she was. Oh, one more thing, while visiting Holland a long time ago, I thought the Dutch were perhaps friendliest people I'd ever met.

Oh that brought back such memories .. I used to sail a similar boat built 1904 and 63ft long in the east coast of England and some inland waters too. She was an original trading boat. A funny thing with these flatbottoms is that if you're in the tidal area of the Wadden Sea in one with very low draught and you sail while the other flatbottoms are already stranded by the low tide there's a little envy, and a lot of respect and interest in the boat. Of course it doesn't matter, it's only half an hour of sailing extra and beeing stranded on the Wad is no problem for a flatbottom at all. Nor is it a bad place to stay the night and step out to find some mussels and oysters. It's not a competition, but in low draught boats the draught can't be low enough.

Oh, and the music is beautiful as well, as alway, even if you did not play yourself. (At least not in the first 15 minutes). This looks like lake 'De Fluessen' . I remember 40 years ago that i sailed an 'Optimist' , a small dinghy with a wooden sword. And that sword BROKE... while i was supposed to follow the big family Etap28. But without a sword (skegg?) no more tacking for me, the only thing i could do was to go down wind to that very same island. No mobile phones back then! So i was stuck on that 'deserted' island. Luckily my struggle with the Optimist had been noticed so the Etap had turned around to 'rescue' me. Simpler times. Happier days! That Lemsteraak is a sweet ship. My great-great grandfather used to own a flat bottom 'Skutsje' cargo ship called 'Nova Cura' , he and his family lived on board while carrying cargo from Friesland to North-Holland and back as 'beurt schippers'. Beurt being that schippers had to wait for getting a load assigned to carry. Sadly the ship ended up in Amsterdam as a 'woonboot' ( basically a floating house). Thnx for the lovely video!

My understanding is that they're less well suited for blue water boats, but now that I think of it that may be just the overall design of these boats themselves rather than the leeboards in particular. Perhaps someone else can weigh in? -Maya
@ajknives4192
@ajknives4192 3 жыл бұрын
Yes they are more likely to sail in shallower waters and maybe some parts of the Northern sea. But an Ocean crossing I would not recommend in such a boat. Most or all Blue water boats have a very low point of balance (below the waterline) but boats like this are more stable due to the large area that's touching the Water (like a Catamaran)

@@ajknives4192 . As a matter of fact . The eel barges that sailed from Friesland to London , they had there own mooring close by the tower bridge , where also flatbotom ships with leeboards . Also the Thames barges that sailed with cargo all around the North sea . And the realy big "Groninger zee tjalken" where going as far as Newfoundland . They also had leeboards . And in the 1600's all Dutch fleets employed one or more jachten mainly for carrying people between the ships of the fleet . All over the world and with leeboards . Sailing with leeboards is very different than sailing on a keelyacht . But when handled with respect and good sailorship a lot is possible .

Sailboats with a deep, heavy keel sail to windward better than other designs. I had a Irwin 10/4 when I lived in SW Florida (shallow water). It had a shallow draft keel with a centerboard and 2000lb ballast but, it was wide for it's length, 10'4" beam on a 25' LOD boat. The 2'9" draft made it good for the shallow water but, it gave away a lot in upwind ability. There was a small boat design that some people built in the 60s that had lee boards but, Google won't find it for me. There are some rather beamy, shallow draft, twin keel boats, Westerly made several (Centaur 26' was most popular) but, I think the main advantage for them is they stay upright when the tide goes out and leaves them aground.

What an amazing journey you are making and welcome in the sailing nation number 1. Great to see you have already enjoyed sailing here on these amazing waters of Fryslân, on the Waddensea as much as on the inland waters! I myself am the proud owner of a Samourai MK2 small sailing yacht and am a youth sailing instructor in Arnhem, where my son has learned to sail from his 7th year on. Now he has his own refurnished Flying Junior. Enjoy your stay here.

I really enjoy learning about sailing through your videos. They are beautiful in all respects and educational too. I don't know much about the Netherlands and even less about their sailing culture.

I love those dutch barges! Really unique. Ty for the video. I went to the netherlands once, but was never in sight of the boats.

Great stuff, none of it looked weird to us, we are 'Broads' sailors where nudging into the bank to raise sail is routine. The area you are sailing in looks like a gigantic Norfolk Broads! Love it :-)

Took me back to a Wroxham boatyard, especially turning cruisers using prop walk, always baffled the hirers

@@spentacle ha ha, brilliant. Everything we do seems to baffle the hirers. Mind you, sometimes we don't know what's going to happen. The wind does weird things up those rivers!

Fantastic! I've wanted to take a sail on one of these boats for a long time. You got me that much closer!
