I'm a full-time professional Webtoon and Comic creator and I'll be reviewing viewer submitted comics and Webtoon Canvas. I will look at art, storytelling, lettering, etc. This is to try to help you learn how to get better at comics by giving an honest critique.

This video critique was requested by the creator. I don't offer unsolicited advice because I don't believe it is appropriate to force your opinions on someone you don't know, even if you have good intentions. Imagine walking up to a stranger on the street and saying "yellow's not your color."
I'm not going to focus much on anatomy and other aspects of drawing that simply require practice and time to learn. Saying "Draw better biceps" isn't super helpful. All artists are always and forever trying to draw better biceps.

O-EH here! Thank you so much for reviewing my comic! I asked you not to hold back and you certainly didn't lol. XD I didn't realize my summery was slower paced, so I'll be fixing that promptly, and oof yeah speech bubbles are definitely my Achilles heel! I always struggle with font and balloon placement, I'll definitely be making strides to improve that. XP I don't quite have time to fix all of it right now (I am going to be moving soon qwq) but I look forward to correcting those errors! XD (And omg that face you used for the thumbnail) (I'm dead XD)

I love this series as well! It makes think a lot about what i can improve on my comic going forward. I think getting the gutter/timing is a tough thing to figure out, especially if you're used ro more traditional comic format...

Agreed. I find myself sliding panels up and down like "is this good, is this good...what am I doing?!?" Looking at that large empty space on webtoon just makes me feel uncomfortable when I'd editing because I've been trained by traditional comics on how things are supposed to look. But anytime I read a webtoon with larger gutters it feels more enjoyable than one that has them close together. Though I wonder if that's the case for everyone? or at least the majority?

@@walterostlie yep it definitely feels more natural to us, because when we read something to ourselves, the words linger in our brain for at least 0.5 seconds to process. (At least for me. That’s why sometimes I don’t even know what I’m reading if I just read a large chunk of text all at once). It provides time, space, and suspense (if that’s what they’re going for)

The part about speech bubbles- specifically, how long speeches squeezed into a single bubble can make it seem like the character is speaking quickly- that's so nifty! Such a simple tip but I think about this now when I'm planning out speech bubbles. Great content as always, Walter! Love this series!

Your advice on the summary was on point! The rewrite of the summary made me way more interested in the story!

Thanks! Summaries are pretty tough to write. It's a balance between enough detail without being generic, but also not overloading the reader with details they don't need. A lot of the times it seems like it's easier for someone who's not the creator to write the summary. Hard to see the forest for the trees, I guess.

Your content is so valuable and informative. It helped in so many ways when I decided to try a comic in a more webtoon format (I've been used to traditional comics and webcomic page formats). There are many valuable pieces of advice to be gained in this video such as the use of gutter space and how wordy should the average speech bubble be? I also really appreciate the way you do your critique videos. It's always from a place of love and never condescending. Will you ever do series that are on Tapas? There's a lot of good comics on there once you did passed the generic sponsored romance mangas that they put on the front page for some reason

All of these critiques were requested by the creators of the comic. So I would do a review of a Tapas comic, I've just never been asked. Of course, I am super backed up on critiques now, so I dunno when I'd be able to take a new request, but I don't have anything against Tapas. I actually posted their first before I even knew about Webtoons, back when it was still tapastic ;-)

Hi! I love your videos and advice, although I wanted to say that I disagree with the idea of only critiquing when asked for. Don't get me wrong, insulting someone's work under the guise of constructive criticism is wrong and no one should do it, however we shouldn't limit ourselves to opinions from only people you ask specifically. For example, a few years back in high school I used to draw heads really small and shoulders really wide. At the time I couldn't see it in my Artwork, and none of my friends or family ever mentioned it when they looked at my stuff. I was drawing during lunch at school and a girl in my class who I never talked to passed by me and noticed my drawing. She straight up asked me "why is her head so small?" I asked her what she ment and she explained to me how it looked to her. She didn't do this to be malicious, she said this just as a non biased observation. Its because of her saying it I was able to see it and I started remedy that in my work going forward. I don't think getting "unsolicited" advice is a bad thing, it might come across as blunt and little hard to hear at first but I think it's good to get opinions from random people about your work because they reflect the general consensus other people see in your work. We shouldn't equate constructive criticism and being rude as the same thing. Again that being said, that's by no means a pass to insult people's art by saying it's "constructive criticism and your being too sentimental", but we should be open to hearing it from randos! I love your videos and your advice, it's been really helpful for my own webtoon endeavors. Cheers!

Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment. I totally understand where you're coming from, trust me. I don't think unsolicited criticism is inherently mean, people who offer it often have the best intentions in mind. Side note, even if someone asks for a critique I don't think people should be malicious with their feedback either. The reason I don't offer it unsolicited is because not everyone wants to hear criticism or is in a place to hear criticism. It's rude for me to assume they want or need my insights or that they are emotionally available for it. Most creators who are looking for criticism are often vocal about the desire to hear feedback, so it's pretty easy to find artists who want to hear critiques, don't really need to offer it to people who never asked. I often liken it to walking up to a stranger and telling them they really shouldn't wear yellow. I won't condemn anyone for giving unsolicited advice, it's just not something I'm about.

Running out of ideas to do in your current story, or can't come up with an idea for a new story? If it's a new story, just try doing a short story that sort of a rip-off of a story you really like. Just to shake off the cobwebs.
