Matt Wenning trained under Louie Simmons for years. While at Westside Barbell he learned key information on how to become one of the strongest people on the planet. Westside Barbell was more than a powerlifting gym, it was a mecca for some of the strongest people in the world to come and train their way into the record books. Using advanced soviet lifting techniques, eastern philosophies on building the body from the ground up, and extreme training schedules Westside cemented its name in history.
Matt goes in depth on what he learned while at Westside Barbell. From the methods and workouts that were used by Chuck Vogelpohl, George Halbert, Louie Simmons, Kenny Patterson, and Rob Fusner! There is a lot of media on Westside Barbell but never have you heard from someone who was training under their methods but decided to LEAVE THE GYM to BECOME BETTER! Learn how the lifters at the gym were able to go so hard and stay so dominate and also HOW THEY COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER!
In a gym where there were few rules besides going as hard as possible only the select few could survive and become the best in the world.
THE FULL VIDEO ON CONJUGATE TRAINING SECRETS EXPLAINED IS ON MATT'S PATREON WITH OVER 20 MINUTES OF CONTENT:

He shows FULL WORKOUTS and covers the cycles you need to follow to fine tune your days-months-years to maximize results and make sure you are in top tier form for decades to come! Trained there in the early 90's. Lou was a very gracious Coach to me even though I was NOT an Elite Lifter. Doris, Amy, Chuck, Jeff Chorpenning and others were there in the day. Westside was on the end of an old shopping center back then ... Dempsey Road maybe?

Informative, Matt. Most of the things you listed are universal for any training system! And in the face of all of the Westside/Louie idolatry, it's refreshing to see candid accounts of what actually went on behind the scenes. If we're going to keep training grounded in science, we have to be critical and objective! I look forward to more insights.

Riding solo is the best option. I used to get off in the gym by showing off with presses and arm training? But I wasn't getting any stronger like that. I hated squats and was scared to get on the squat rack cause I benched twice what I squated smh. Then I built my own gym in my basement, with loud speakers and all the time I needed to practice my deadlifts and squats. Now I've blown past all my gym PRs! Good luck

The idea of rotating max efforts sounds like it would have the affect of built in deloads. When you move from max effort low bar squatting into SSB's you would have to pull weight from the bar for a period of time and rebuild on the different movement pattern.

Louie has produced some of the strongest powerlifters in the world, bar none (no pun intended). But when you look at his present physical condition, that tells me going balls to the wall as often as he did and pushing his lifters without allowing adequate recovery training plays a big role in overall strength gains (and injury-free) once you're competing at the elite level. Look at Louie's current physical condition. Spine (cervical) issues, shoulder joint replacement, numerous extreme muscle pulls, etc. As strong as he was in the day, I don't think many lifters would want to be as beat up as he is. While other lifters would probably look at all his injuries as a "badge of honor" and follow him right off the cliff.

IMO - Louie Simmons has severe OCD and powerlifting (and the pursuit of the highest levels of strength) has been Louie's Obsession since his teen years . On the positive side, his OCD hyper-focus has allowed to become not just an Elite Powerlifter and Champion, but also find ways to gain strength more efficiently. Louie's Mechanical Mind is always looking for solutions. On the negative side, he's overtrained badly, probably for decades, leading directly to catastrophic injuries or contributing to those catastrophic injuries getting worse or not healing properly. So, since Louie's first instinct is to train through pain or serious injury, he doesn't hesitate to push his guys too hard and they get injured as a result. Has Chuck Vogelpohl even forgiven Louie? I know Chuck blamed Louie for an injury he got during a powerlifting meet - that he attributes to Louie's squat depth coaching.

Louie said he got injured because he didn't train right for the first 12 years. After injuries he figured out how to minimize injuries by eliminating muscle imbalances. Apparently injuries are pretty rare in his gym now.
@carljacobson7156

Good Points Louis seems to want to push it 'Balls to the Wall' all the time. Only now is he paying more attention to recovery, now that he can't lift anymore. High Frequency training definitely has it's place, but recovery phases have to be programmed in properly or you end up losing your gains to overtraining.

Wish I knew about recovery back in the 80's. What I did know, was Arnold would eat lunch and go out on the beach and take a nap after working out. And bodybuilders were sleeping as much as 12 hours a day if they needed to. Above that you need to actively destress your body and give it all the time it needs. Sometimes I did light workouts or just skipped a day or 2, and ate good food. Great video and so true.

Hey Matt, just a curious follower here! Are you completely sure you can attribute the gainz to conjugate? I mean no hate but when youre in untested we cannot deny how much different doses of stuff and different roids would affect your progression. Add into that food, stress etc. I personally have tried all different kinds of conjugate programming and none of them has worked better than linear progress for me.

He wanted to take over WSBB but Louie said once he died the gym was done, he said no one else could run it like him, but the one guy that could run it like Louie is Chuck, but Louie is a crazy old man that know almost everything about powerlifting so he wants WSBB to die with him

Serious question: I’m just getting into lifting and I watched a competition from earlier this year that Ray Williams won with a squat of 490kg. The crowd went crazy and I was sure it was a world record. From the numbers you mention you and your squad were lifting back in the day it sounds like big Ray wouldn’t have even been close. Was Westside really that far ahead of the game?
@SuperSk33t
@SuperSk33t 4 жыл бұрын
Ray Williams squat was done in the raw category, which means he does not wear any supportive equipment besides knee sleeves. All of Matt's and Westside lifter's numbers were done in the equipped class, which means they wear a supportive suit for the squat and deadlift, and a supportive shirt for the bench press. These supportive pieces of equipment can add 200+ lbs to an individual lift.

I think Louie would wanted people to push back but it’s Louie and people wouldn’t push back on him. Why, Smelly was fried because he pushed back and Louie fired him because there wasn’t more he could teach him. Just my opinion on it all.

Coming back to this after re-watching the documentary. I imagine the amount of dick-measuring shown in it is overblown, but you think long-term that helped you guys push each other or just lead to unecessary injury and not peaking to meets?

Ugh I love what you're doing here but I can't get jiggy with westside. I cant get jiggy with geared lifting either. Westside was great because of the effort but not recommended for almost anyone normal or not westside. I feel like you arent westside at all. Those jumps you elude to shows that what they are doing isnt quite right. You shouldnt be able to make 20 percent gains on ultra elite level lifts in a year or two. You're great. Not hating

Joseph W. I would check out Nate Harvey on Instagram. He was a strength and conditioning coach for many years and successfully used the conjugate method with a wide array of athletes in different sports. Also, Westside is a version of conjugate taken to the most extreme degree. You can certainly run conjugate without doing exactly what Westside does

Maybe this works for equipped lifters but for raw lifters this isnt optimal. Specificity > Rotate exercises.
@Danielllllewis
@Danielllllewis 4 жыл бұрын
It will work for raw as long as you have correct exercise selection. The variations of the main lift performed are close enough to it to follow the law of specificity. It also avoids repetitive strain injuries that are caused by doing tons of volume of the same movement over and over again

Jorge Gonzalez I’ve never got that argument either. It takes wayyyyy more skill to bench in a shirt than raw, so if anything specifically *should* be more relevant to equipped.
