When it comes to skirted jigs there really is a TON of versatility, the bite is what drives me to modify, if I am getting bit but missing them for example, that’s when I like to explore and go more compact, to me, being able to change bait size without tying something else on is important, especially if you have been working all day to find em and need that little something. Love talking jigs man, my favorite way to catch ‘em for sure, great video man and thanks !!!

A jig freak, and always have 2-3 tied on at all times. I like to cut my skirts in clearer to light stained water, when vision will be more obvious and possibly a factor, as I want that thing to look alive and "defensive". I do, however, fish a lot of darker, mudder water, and won't have the skirts trimmed, as I want that extra bulk to move more water, as it's more of a reaction bite anyways and the extra bulk helps sight as well. I also make my own skirts, as I"m very picky about color in clearer water, but even more picky when it comes to having a very dense skirt. So I use the fishingskirts/boss material and, though it's a pain with the skirting tool, I make 80 to 100 strand skirts for my jigs, and it made a huge difference in the 10 years I've done it. Summer night fishing is my fave type of fishing, and those thicker, bigger skirts move a ton of water and I don't think I've ever had a fish hit anything harder at night than a jig, they literally freight train it and actually had my forefinger broken by an 8#'er 6 years ago when she slammed it, and actually tore the rod out my hand and finger got broke under the reel as she yanked away.....it's like she located it and then swam back 10 yards and ran at it as hard as she could like she was angry.....probably because it was during the bluegill spawn and she was giving some payback. Good times lol. Just my 2 cents and experience. Gonna chk out more of your vids....nice job.

I trim the skirt to trailer size. 3/8 swim jig I won't trim depending on skirt length but I normally trim a flipping jig skirt to expose the smaller craw trailer more. I also trim the weed guard if it's very stiff

When it comes to jig fishing my confidence is mainly a finesse jig. Having said that there really is no need to trim a finesse jig considering the skirts are normally shorter, but if I'm fishing a full size jig then yes I will trim the skirt 9/10 times.

Those finesse jigs are some of my favs too. I have a bitsy flip jig always at the ready. Back years ago I used to throw an Eakin’s jig but haven’t seen those around for some time. It was a real great finesse jig as well.

@@SteveRogersOutdoors I like the dirty jigs Luke Clausen finesse jig, they have great colors to choose from. I also use the Kietech finesse jig if I want to go really small. Both are effective. Jig fishing is one of my favorite ways to catch bass however where I live it's actually pretty tough to get on a jig bite. This year the speedworm has been my go-to.

Steve, do you have a certain method or way that you like to trim your jigs? Intresting topic and great under water visual. I dont think as anglers we really take enough time to understand what a bait is actually doing or looks like under water. You are doing a great job on highlighting that very thing. Keep up the great work 👍

Happy Father's Day Steve! Great video, I'm just getting into jig fishing everyone says to trim the skirts and weed guard and I have. But so far no bites yet but I have gotten hung up and lost a lot jigs. So I'm gonna stop trimming the weed guards and see if that might save me some money. What's your opinion on trimming the weed guards?

The reason why I trim my skirts is to make a more compact profile and it allows me to fish a smaller trailer and the claws can still flap freely

Randy Blauket had a video about trimming skirts unevenly so the bristles are a mixture of short and long, to break up the profile. I don’t use jigs or spinnerbaits much due to snags, so I can’t say whether it’s effective. But it seems I’ve spent more time prepping lures than throwing them.
@SteveRogersOutdoors

Hey Mr. Rogers it’s me again, I do not have a lot of confidence with a jig. I have been using jigs for quite a few years… but I have not once caught a bass on it. I need some advice on how to retrieve it.
@SteveRogersOutdoors

Here is a link to a video that may help on figuring out what the bite feels like: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qr9jhZmdqpynfIk.html The bite on the drop is by far the hardest to learn. To keep things simple to start I would focus on a dragging retrieve at first. Just let the lure drag across the bottom and wait for a thump or spongy weight. If the water you are fishing has lots of debris on the bottom you may have to hop the lure instead. Let me know if you have questions after watching that video. It was the hardest lure for me to learn by far.

@@cgravey I would use a color combination that matches the primary baitfish in your waters. Bluegill patterns work well and when in doubt a green pumpkin or black/blue will get the job done. I am a huge fan of twin tail grubs as jig trailers. My favorite is the Rage Menace.
