They won the war against the Old Ones, and then rebelled against the C'Tan who were controlling them. It was not an easy war to win. Meanwhile the Elder and Krorks were quickly becoming the new threat, as they were creations of the Old Ones. They are the reason Necrons decided to go to bed for millions of years, hoping that the Krorks and Eldar would just not stand the test of time.

As a massive Necron fan and player. I personally find it funny when Eldar and Ork fans cope with that fact their factions lost the war in heaven. And the only reason why Necrons chose the go to sleep instead of dealing with the Krorks, Eldar, and warp bs is because they just finished bitch slapping not one, but two races of Gods (exterminating one and shattering/enslaving the other) out is shear pettiness I might add. So in essence they were tired and just straight up went “Fuck this, fuck you, I’m going to bed. It will sort itself out when I wake up”.

I had a really goofy idea a bit ago of doing a necron army of flayed ones who all were dressed like regular people and painted to "blend in" but you could still see the metal underneath, give them all little wigs too

To clarify on the Necrons going to sleep The reason for it was that their chronomancers predicted that if they slept for a time, the Krork (lacking any enemies to fight on the scale of the Necrons) would eventually devolve into a weaker state, and that the Eldar would more or less destroy themselves through excess So while they could have stuck around and fought another massive war, they'd literally just finished slapping two races of gods and the Silent King decided that a better course would be to return autonomy to the people who could still think for themselves (essentially necrons that still have a mind of their own can now refuse orders from him), he'd leave the galaxy and explore while his people sleep

My favorite necron is anrakyr the traveler. He hops from tomb world to tomb world helping out other necron lords or to take revenge if the tombs were destroyed. The "Gods"/Old Ones didn't gave them anything; the Necrons are, as far as I know like the Humans and T'au, are a Species which weren't brought into the Galaxy by the Old Ones. The whole issue with the Old Ones was the that they didn't gave them anything - the Necrons wanted to get rid of their special Cancer which followed them even on other Planets due to "nobody knows"; the old ones said "Hahaha, lol.". That's in addition to their pettiness which leads them to constant infighting was the reason for the war in heaven.

On Necrons The Necrons are one of the oddest cludges of lore in the setting, sorta terrifying but sorta a bit silly kinda with some goofy asthetics leftovers from the very early WH40k days and nerfed (though for good reason). [Short(er) Version] You could really look at the necrons story as the origin story of WH40k, it sets up many of the things that the current grim dark WH40k galaxy lore is built on. From entire factions, like the Eldar and the Orks devolved qworks, the webway, to lore like the emperor maybe fighting and imprisoning a shard of a c'tan on mars is the omnisor? Are black pylons necron tech to hold back the immaterium and deny chaos access to real space, while they sleep off the war in heaven and want their galaxy back. Black fortresses ... and maybe even the Tyranids etc Plus the necros have some good characters, the silent king, trezen the infinite ... classes like those cursed ones, the flayed ones? WHAT could be more terrifying than an immortal robot with no feelings or emotions, you can't reason or negotiate with or really even kill made of a living metal with weapons that disintegrate you to atoms just slowly enough that you get to watch it happen I KNOW all that, plus it's insane, psychotic and it's wearing the skin of the last guys he met, covered in blood n viscera and will not disintegrate you but try and slash you up, rip you apart and eat and skin you. Necrons have a potential to be absurdly cool, but are getting no love from GW. In my head canon every warrior is inside their head whoever they where before the transference, but unable to speak, understand what's going on and move witout an order. Imagine the horror - your a young mother, your child was born just few weeks before, but it's nowhere to be found and you can't look for it. Your body just moves on its own bringing you to the most hellish warzones imaginable. You feel pain (or you think it's pain) of getting your body blown up and rebuild constantly. Flayed ones are just like warriors but with autopilot turned off, that's whu they have the thing for flesh. They are bringing themselves to life in their minds.

I do collect nekrons and run them as sautekh and the color scheme i like to use is a mix of Nemesos Zahndrekh and sautekh but with a bit more color because i think they look dapper in white gold and green.

There is a more straightforward answer to the "Why did they go into the Great Sleep?" question. Essentially, the War In Heaven is what corrupted the Immaterium into the Warp as we know it now in lore, and that had disastrous effects on Real Space. For example: the Enslavers were a Warp based entitinty capable of pushing into Real Space by burning out a Psyker; since all the Old Ones' creations were Psykers, the Enslavers were a serious threat to anything alive. Necrons, having no soul or living body, were unaffected by both of these problems side effects, but the destabilization between the Warp and Real Space was a problem. So the Necrons built their Dolmen Gates and Black Stone Monument to repair the border between spaces and, still recovering from the War In Heaven, went to the Great Sleep to wait out the destruction and repair time. Remember this: the loss of one Dolmen Gate at Cadia is what ripped open the Great Rift in the first place.

My favourite dynasty is novokh, I love their brutality in melee and their colour scheme is cool plus the history behind them and what they did recently with their lore is cool, but if I were to play necron I would play them as the destroyer cult army of renown: flayed ones, lokhust and skorpekh destroyers, I couldn't ask for anything else

Hey Arthur! A guy I really like ClassicManD gave you a shout out in a short he made, got asked the question "Who are worst, Necrons or Terminators" so just wanted to say your videos are being used by content creators for research on the setting, I hope that makes you feel good bud ^.^

I'll explain why the great sleep happened and why most of the strongest necron weapons were ordered destroyed by the Silent King just before the great sleep. Those weapons were so powerful, they tore holes through reality connecting the universe to another universe that is known today as the warp or sea of souls. The Necrons did this while trying to gain access to the webway where their enemies the Old Ones were hiding. In the process the Necron accidentally unleashed the Enslavers into the universe. And because the Necron were capable of time travel, the Silent King tried finding a time the Enslavers were gone and he found it 60 million years later also found the Eldar nearly ended themselves and so the decision of the great sleep was made and to prevent more accidental catastroph like the accidental Enslaver invasion, the Silent King ordered all the weapon that werre too powerful to be destroyed.

Playing Dawn of War: Sweet, space zombies! Reading the lore: They wear...Egyptian garb? Fuckin' NERDS! The pyramids are sick, don't get me wrong but once you get into the Egyptian cosplay worthy of a night in Las Vegas in their choice of casino, that's when it gets kinda...silly.
