Does steel - more abrasive than lead - wear out shotgun barrels? We start our steel vs barrels test, with a stand at a Nottinghamshire shooting ground dedicated to trying to wear out the barrels of a new steel-proof gun.

As US hunter i shot steel for decades. It was terrible at first but has improved over the years. I don’t hunt much now and use nothing but Kent Tungsten. Expensive yes but it’s the best there is.

Did some testing myself and the major issue I had was the steel shot don't penetrate or hold velocity over range as they are much lighter than lead. For clays at up to 70y I would recommend a minimum velocity of 1450fps and a minimum shot size of 5. For game or any rough shooting, size 1, the same speed.

Aside from the probable damage to gun barrels, you can’t argue with simple physics (although the “self proclaimed experts” do). Read the comments on here and everywhere else when shooters have actually used steel shot cartridges for actual practical shooting situations and you will see that lead is ballistically superior to steel. That really should end this argument. But it drags on and on and on ad infinitum.

I dont really understand how shooting lead is bad for environment....doesnt the lead come from the environment to begin with???
@NorthCedarCreekRanch
@NorthCedarCreekRanch Жыл бұрын
From what I understand it was implemented because duck hunters would fire so many lead shells over bodies of water that the waterfowl would eat it, then get lead poisoning and die. Plus it’s a good way to sell “premium” waterfowl shells

Uranium comes from the environment, but you wouldn’t want me to spread it around your property despite that being “the environment”. Lead is naturally occurring, yes. However, you wouldn’t likely find a bunch of waterfowl living right there for the reason that they wouldn’t tolerate it well. Other organisms that do exist near natural lead deposits would have adapted to that over time. Also, a lot of pellets end up in the water which make their way into fish. Now lead is introduced into the food cycle and increases the risk of human consumption. So yeah, there’s plenty of reason not to use lead.

So does oil from supertankers, but birds doesn’t seem to like that either. 😂 Seriously look it up, lead is very bad for the living organisms and will accumulate in the body, slowly making one sick. Kind regards Niklas.

That’s a really great question. Form what I understand, The problem is that lead is a neuron toxin that are bad for almost all living things including humans at very low levels. Like others say if you have lots of people shooting over many years it can get into the water and into the birds. It’s not just about killing ducks form lead poising… if the ducks have high levels of lead we are also eating lead when we eat the animals we hunt. Im on the fence about shoot lead at the range but I’m planning on using lead alternatives for anything I plan to eat.

I used to think the same way about lead, “what’s the big deal?” Yes lead comes from the soil, however it’s not CONCENTRATED like over bodies of water, where lead shot is literally distributed like “bird seed” in heavy heavy concentrations by us hunters every season. There’s bodies of water that have been getting these high concentrations of lead shot for over 150 years from lead shotgun hunters. The lead piles up at the bottom and ducks and other animals injest them. So switching to steel (or other non toxic shot) helps keep the concentrated levels of toxic lead out of the food chain. Every little effort helps. Steel when sitting exposed on the soil or in water, oxidizes and eventually turns back into iron and “rusts away.” It’s far less toxic in concentrations than lead. Lead does NOT oxidize away.

Why cant copper ones be made like eley zenith surely copper would be a better option then steel ?
@davidcurran1607
@davidcurran1607 3 жыл бұрын
Pure copper cartridges are already on the market by rottweil and Fob but come with a higher price as expected. Pure copper shot has been used by reloaders for some years now with great results but the cost is the problem. Copper coated steel is used also but it will not change the composition or rulings with steel shot usage and choke/older nitro proofed shotguns

Steel shot through full choke . How about a marlin 55 goosegun shooting steelshot bb shot at 1500 fps from federal , 2 3/4 12 gauge shotgun. Ive heard people shooting steel through these old gooseguns. They say the steel compresses when it hits the full choke and that the barrel is protected by the plastic shotcup that holds the steel bbs. The marlin 55 goosegun is 3inch chambered but im sure lead only.

As a US duck hunter from the lead shot days to steel let me sum it up. Steel shot sucks, it is not as good as lead, it doesn't kill as good as lead and it will damage fixed choked shotgun if tighter than modified choke.

How does steel not kill as good as lead
@Rambocop9
@Rambocop9 Жыл бұрын
@@ethannewcombe7093 steel doesnt keep its energy/velocity as much as lead does and steel deform very badly while lead keeps it energy/velocity further and have much better deformation/wound cavity than steel because lead is softer and heavier. Rule of thumb, you need to go 1 or 2 shot size bigger with steel to keep the same killing capacity but you'll obviously get less pellets and less density in your patern.
@colt10mmsecurity68
@colt10mmsecurity68 6 ай бұрын
@@Rambocop9WRONG! You have it backwards…. Steel does NOT DEFORM. LEAD being softer, DEFORMS easier when compressed than steel. The issue with steel is that the tighter the choke, the harder steel shot is to,that choke because it will not DEFORM to,adjust through the tighter choke. Something’s got to give and since steel won’t give like lead through a tight choke, the choke and barrel will “give,” DEFORM, and bulge badly. Steel works fine if one knows how to adjust to it. Go 2 sizes larger with steel shot and one choke diameter size larger with steel shot and it performs nearly identical then to lead. I’ve been hunting with steel in the USA since 1991 when it was mandated nationwide for ducks and geese. I bring home my bag limits with #2 Steel 3” magnums and a Modified (1/2) choke every season. For small game like dove and wild quail, I used #7.5 lead shot from an Improved Cylinder (1/4) choke. Now I switched to #6 steel and dropped open to,a Skeet (1/8) choke. It works just fine and I can’t tell any difference. Remember, steel shot holds TIGHTER with a more open choke than lead. A Modified (1/2) choke with steel is nearly identical in performance to a Full choke with lead. Yes a Full choked family heirloom is just ass-out with today’s steel ammo. You should never use a choke tighter than Modified (1/2) with steel, otherwise you will damage your choke. That’s just the breaks, but that’s a good excuse to tell your wife that it’s time you reward yourself with a new modern shotgun! 😊😊😊 Stop going out to dinner every single weekend for a couple of months and save up for a nice Beretta, Browning or Miroku 12ga that can handle steel if you don’t already have a “steel shotgun.”

Why did you just not go in your backyard and do all this shooting with steel there's no risk of lead contamination why did you just not do it on your own property I'm confused of course I live in the United States and we're used to being free to do what we want here short of damaging the environment 10000 rounds of steel good iron in the ground for plants and trees if you ask me I own 100 acres of forest 4 less than you would pay for a two-bedroom one-bathroom pad per year in England

What I have tried for my self were very disappointing by various manufacturers. Here it is definitely being promoted like the Holy Grail. No matter how many factory rounds you put down the tubes, why the hell would you be looking for damage or wear? I have tried the various options for myself and found performance to be a very poor second to lead on both game and clays. The shooting organisations would have done a lot more for its customers by promoting and fighting its corner. The BASC is a disgrace and it seems that the cartridge manufacturers would rather promote selling its good and loyal customers an inferior product. This is my own opinion based on my own findings.
