Disable Planets were seen as a group at the forefront of an image Hip Hop was supposed to be. Cool like that was top 15 on Billboard, their album went gold and the group were still in a happy place. All things looked bright for the future of Hip Hop as long as we had groups like this creating. What I like most about Digable Planets were while they certainly had the opportunity to excel in a music industry that at some point began to illuminate and sort after how many albums did you sell or what could make them the most money, they stayed true to the art form of hip hop and didn’t compromise their creative journey just to be the highest selling artist. For them they were creators through music that respected the listeners and wanted to give us music lasting longer than a hit song of the summer or billboard topping single to propel their sales. In the end that thinking may have hurt them, as music did evolve, and a leading element of its evolvement was finding ways to best capitalize financially of the art being put out and only interested in artist willing to play the game. Digable Planets only release 2 albums together that were both received well critically, but shortly after the second album, they disbanded and hip hop was robbed of great music that could’ve lasted the rest of the 90s. No. The industry fell short of it. At that point, "conscious" rap was on it's way out. Instead, what we got was Compton's Most Wanted, and 2 Live Crew. No more Tribe called Quest or Jungle Brothers, at least not being pushed by their record label. And then you have issues like creative differences and ego that can split people apart. Who know's the real reason?

Groups like them don't last long not because they're not talented but because they have integrity and vision. The music industry short sells most good artists by making everything disposable.

Idc what no one says, Blowout Comb was a classic. If they would've done another video (namely "Jettin'") with the same vibe as Cool like Dat, I think they would've done better. They're A&R & Managers should've worked harder. All the pieces were there. When you have ARTISTS not numbers, you have to treat them as such.

They were hot in the last golden age year of hip hop in 1993. Digable planets unfortunately peaked at a transitional time period where diverse styles were encouraged just like Arrested Development and Souls of Mischief, respectively . From 1994 and further on; hip hop became more commercialized and the art lyricism wasn’t held to the standard like it was once were in the 80s and early 90s. Their second album was dope! Very underrated

I agree. Plus, gangster rap was becoming the new flavor of the month by 93, and the industry started pushing the gangster narrative. Artists who weren't on the gangster bandwagon were starting to get eclipsed. I think that gangster rap was bad for the art, and Hip Hop never recovered.

In 1994/'95, sometimes I would walk into a record store like The Whiz or Tower Records, and be soooo confused by the amount of amazing top notch groups AND solo artists on the shelves that I wouldn't buy anything! I had to go back home and think it over!! Thats how dope Hip Hop was in the mid '90s. It was the Golden Age and I was silly enough to think it would last forever. I took it for granted, for real!

@xariqx_
@xariqx_ Жыл бұрын
@Jeffrey Juliano of course, you can. just because an artist is influential doesn’t mean that their career wasn’t impacted negatively. his breakup with eric b, him being dropped from his label, then signing to dr. dre’s label and then never releasing the album due to creative difference. i wont even include his lack of touring, delaying of “seventh seal”, etc. y’all can’t tell me all that didn’t stunt his growth.
@xariqx_
@xariqx_ Жыл бұрын
@@miiiiisvibes contractual issues with eric b which led to a court battle that dissolved the group, being dropped from the label, signing with dr.dre only for his album never to come out, “the master” performing poorly in the charts, announcing the release of “seventh seal” in 2006 and it being delayed until 2009. rakim is a legend, and his legacy should recognize by the whole world, but these issues stunted that.

Digable planets was very tight of golden age of hip hop in the early 80's and 90's. Cool like dat was talking new ultra classic and black culture of the streets and show how the environment was going on? Making from time to time. It takes courage. But it was cool songs of generously with hipster and revolutionary music of hip hop sounds. Mariana "ladybug Mecca" Vieira from our hometown of Maryland one is sliver spring. I'm Baltimore Maryland.
