Oscar was a star for Chelsea and Brazil, he left European football for good in 2016, aged 25, and then headed for China during the peak of his career, and never returned.
So, what did happen to Oscar?
Jack Lang and Peter Rutzler write. Craig Silcock illustrates.

Even as someone who simply wants to see the best players playing in the best league, I do respect Oscar for being up front about his motives. Some people put money over footballing legacy and there’s nothing wrong with that at the end of the day. Compare that to someone like Henderson who is still trying to BS people into believing he went to the Saudi league for footballing reasons.

I think a lot of it comes down to culture too, a lot of South Americans, Brazilians especially don’t view European football the same way Europeans do. Coming to Europe is just a job for a lot of them, so if you get a job offer that’s more money, 95% of people take it. Their passion for football comes from their own continent and they choose to end their careers playing for the club they supported growing up, similar to Europeans.

I think a lot of people are missing the point and also don’t know about other things like taxes. Basically half his wage at Chelsea is taxed, while living in the most expensive city in the world, London. Bro got wayyyy more money and was able to funnel that cash into his family and friends. Friends btw in countries like Brazil are very much like family, especially when you all grow up poor. He saw a way to take care of everyone right down to multiple future generations. He is the guy in his family tree that maybe even hundreds of years from now, his great-great-great grandkids can say “hey grandpa Oscar was really the man, he put us all in a position where we can do as we please, not have to worry and pursue life vs just survive it”. He's made over 160 million in wages since the move, not to mention his wealth from before. Assuming he invested the vast majority and has avoided nose-bleeding taxes as all footballers seem to have a knack for since he left in 2014 then he's probably worth anywhere from 200-300 million pounds now.

Oscar is a rarity in football that he was at least honest that he went for the money (unlike players like Delph & Henderson would lie consistently about their reasons for moving). As much as we like to romanize sports if someone offered to pay you x4 your wages you'd be a fool to not at least consider it, besides he'd won the Premier League, the League Cup & the Europa League with Chelsea (not mind blowing but he has won things in Europe). That's why so many football players go bankrupt. To support your family, you just provide them with good education and they can earn a good living with them. Many players dream of a European career like his time at Chelsea..playing for a top team, winning a league title and scoring impressive goals in the Champions League..Some might see it as wasted talent, but he prioritized maximizing his financial gains..I don't blame him for being realistic..What if he suffered a serious injury the next season ending his chances forever..It's easy for fans to say giving up money leads to greater achievements but the decision is complex when you're in that position..His choice ensures a prosperous life for his family for generations..While achieving this might be possible by staying in Europe signing a contract provides certainty..unlike the uncertainty of continually striving for the top..Perhaps he valued the financial reward more, having already experienced genuine European football..This situation is similar to Al Nassr's Talisca even though his exposure to European football was limited..Every week I click on a highlight of Talisca and it's a crazy goal..It's puzzling how Brazil dismisses players not in the top leagues but includes those from their domestic league...

The only thing I remember about him is the last minute goal against Germany in the 2014 World Cup semi-final but it was a loss of 7-1 for Brazil. It was the most horrifying moments for Brazil back then and even now.

Damn! I forgot about this man! He was really fun to watch. I just searched for him, its odd that he still is at Shanghai (that are at least 2 contract extensions since 2016), i would have assummed he earned his money and did go back to Brasil. I know i would have.

To understand Oscar's career, you've got to explain his controversy in his youth team promotion. He was widely regarded as the "new Kaka" in São Paulo's system and even played some games in first team at 16y. But he decided to leave for Internacional despite being a teenager, which led to a judicial battle that ultimately made him stay at Internacional (not before an overrule of a decision that made he go back to São Paulo). He did so because he felt he wanted more money. I held a grudge at him for that decision at the time being a São Paulo fan, but now that I'm older, I understand him, he always felt he had to take care of his family.

For the record, Oscar is still getting paid an absolute premium salary on a contract that was signed shortly before China added their strict import salary caps. In addition, he was close to a deal with Barcelona but it fell through. He's not just there out of a desire to raise up the local league or his love of living in Shanghai (though he and his family do).

He was honest about why he wanted to go. All Chelsea fans know that, and we don't hate him for it. He came from a poor background in Brazil and wanted to provide for his family.

If going back to Europe is possible then I don’t see any big premier league clubs make a move for him other than smaller clubs like Brighton or west ham. At his age and years of playing low level football he seems more suited for serie a or la liga.

As a Chelsea fan I never held anything against him for moving. I respect his decision to move for money and provide for his family. Yeah I wish he had stayed in Europe but it is what it is. I remember Mourinho chose Oscar over Mata which in retrospect mightve been the wrong move, but at least we did win a title with him. With the current Saudi controversy, its much easier to respect players who are just up front about the money and their motives.

What happened to him? He took the smart move and earned the wage that he otherwise wouldn’t be able to, no one else would have offered him that kind of money. As simple as that. He took the road less travelled, but he is not lesser off because of that. He did what’s best for himself, because no one else will look out for him. Kudos, well played, smart man. Enjoy every bit of your success Oscar💪💪🍻

And now the CSL has fallen back to pretty much the same level it was at in 2010, most of the money has disappeared and the stadiums are near empty again. All the players rushing to Saudi should really have taken notes, I've already heard a few reports of players not receiving wages (Lewis Grabban being the most recent and notable example). Its amazing how fickle football is across the board.

My confusion is that even playing in Europe you get that balance. I appreciate and understand why he did it, but you don't have to throw away your whole career. The money in Europe is very good and always will be. There's plenty of money to be made in Europe to support your family whilst also progressing your career. Granted it won't match china's salary but the top leagues to pay well whilst also maintaining that level of prestige. Balance 🤔

Fairplay to Oscar for being honest about just wanting the big money. Nothing wrong with chasing the money or the fame as long as you're honest about it. Guy had a good solid European career and then got paid more than most could ever dream of for years, good for him.
