Take a social media break as you explore the dangers of social media addiction on the human brain and it's harmful effects on society. College scholar Amber Quinney shares with you how she lost her appetite for virtual interaction through her year-long social media fast. Through her talk, learn how to be more mindful of your social media presence and how to be more present in your own life. Amber Quinney is no average college student. A Marketing major at Canisius College, she has completed seven internships and earned more than $50,00 in private scholarships. Amber was a finalist at the national C.E.O. elevator pitch competition, won two research grants, and twice was a WNY Prosperity fellow. She completed the University of California Emerging Leaders Program, and is the founder of “Charm School for Sisters,” which teaches young girls of color about self-love, sisterhood, and success skills. Her talk is based off of her recent research for candidacy for her degree and explores the negative effects on the brain of over saturation of social media exposure and addiction. Her talk also explores the critical role that social media and media stimulation plays in our everyday lives.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I’ve been quitting social media for 3.5 months now. And the reason i chose to quit because i felt like social media has changed my personality. I realized i’ve become more judgmental and ungrateful for what i have and who i am. It was because social media exposed me with other people’s “online” life that seemed to be a perfect life. This triggered me to always compare my life with others. I am a hundred percent agree that social media makes us seek for social validation ultimately. We tend to post something happy and beautiful in order to get as many likes as we can. So that we become popular among our friends or peers. Thankfully, after 3.5 months quitting social media, i can feel some changes in myself. I can focus more on myself without worrying people judge me, i feel more content with my life, and i am happier than ever before. Last but not least, quitting social media enables me to spend quality time with my loved ones because i got no distractions. Sooo for people who are still caught up in social media, you should consider about it ;) God bless, and have a nice day!

@C M thanks! I actually improved A LOT since I last commented here. One thing that helped me is I created a new account and only followed people that really matters in my life. I only have 17friends in that personal/private account. So what happened is I no longer see posts from toxic people and I don't get bombarded by nonsense posts in my feed because I only have a few friends. I also followed pages that only matter in my life, those that help me. So since I only see a few posts in my feed, I no longer spend so much time scrolling because the posts are not many. My original accounts in FB and IG were all deactivated so I only use my personal ones hehe. That worked for me so far. I am only chatting with my family and real friends so I also no longer receive chain messages and chats from unnecessary people xD I am still in my journey to fully go digital minimalism but I have improved so much. I hope everyone's journey are good too!

I damaged a relationship dear to my heart and I had few arguments with people online. it was not worth it. I think quitting a smartphone and switching over to a basic phone hits different. That was what my experience had been when my smartphone broke and I had my exams the coming month, so I resisted getting a new phone and had to switch to a basic nokia phone just for urgent calls. I felt much much more at peace during those times, my insomnia was gone, and sleep routine was automatically fixed to early to bed - early to rise, i felt more energetic and more productive as I did not waste any time on my phone, and I was mentally stable with no anxiety or anything even during my exams. It went on for almost 2 months and then I bought a new smartphone and then life was back with anxiety, to sleeping late, and unproductive days wasting time switching between apps and scrolling and chatting and ultimately it becomes a vicious circle. I still feel like I should go back to my nokia phone but can't actually do that.

"Social media is a symptom not a tactic." Meaning the really successful "influencers" were mostly already in successful positions before their social medias amplified it, or they at least had something they were passionate about and then used it to share with the world. Too often we're trying to "prove" we have good lives, while not really believing it ourselves. I think the main difference between successful and unsuccessful social media users is that the former knows they have good lives and shares it with others, while the latter is trying to convince themselves more than anyone.

Watch "pink drunk tank" speech and maybe you will realize that "those things " are many things but nothing that is designed to help you. In fact social media is the first stage of priming you for listening to the outside source which tells you what to do next, what to buy, so that when AI becomes widespread you and other would buy what some bot r a robot maybe will suggest you. You're supposed to follow the crowd, do what the group would do, ovework yurself and overspend to have to overwork again without asking questions why things are the way they are. If this is your definition of "amusing yourself to death" than yes, this is what this all is really about. Internet is nobody's friend. It never was. It was born as a military tech and it remains what it has always been- a tool to manipulate, control, tool used for surrveillance, control of information etc. It never was a toy and it never will be. You want a harmless toy? Buy a boardgame.

I don't do much of Instagram, Facebook (about 1 hr a week each) but I do at least 15hrs a week on WhatsApp and 35hours a week on my phone in total. Recently I took a GRE timed test practice and I realised I couldn't be still past 30mins to an hour. I began craving WhatsApp status updates... had to pause and check if I had new messages.. I used to read a book every two days years ago but I have only completed 2 books in the last 2years. I'm not sure where to start the fast from.

Reclaim my time! Yes ma’am! I’ve been off fb for about a week which is no sweat for me to do. I have less than 100 friends on fb because I don’t like friending people who I don’t know and I will drop friends if they are negative. NOW KZfaq and Instagram are a beast for me It’s becoming a serious addiction.

So much truth in your speech. I am taking steps to spend less time online and be more present. It is very addictive and a lot of time can be wasted without even realizing.

You’re smart young lady! Well said! I love being off social media. I don’t consider KZfaq to be in the same category as Facebook and Instagram since I am not posting videos or connecting with people I actually know.

What a wise and beautiful young woman! I hope I can be like her someday. Honestly, we don’t need social around 24/7. I only have Instagram and KZfaq now. I don’t have the Instagram app on my phone and discipline myself to only browse youtube after lunch and after dinner. Quitting social media really is much more productive and distressing.

Good talk. As long as these platforms have algorithms that addict and manipulate there is a good reason to abstain. Watch the talks of Tristan Harris and Jaron Lanier to gain a fuller insight into the problem and why deleting your accounts is the best course of action.

When she talks about comparing yourself to a character in a book and you start laughing cuz you always compare your life to book characters. I never really pay attention to real people but when it comes to books I CRAVE that life 😂

I use social medias like search engines ,to find career related groups , during my college time I used this strategy to get simplified notes ..etc..it helped me in many ways ...in my opinion it's up to who is using or how you are handling social media ,, don't let someone else life style to trigger your ego,, just be aware about the negative side and use it wisely ..
