Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. The first encounter between Albus Dumbledore and Tom Riddle was in 1938, when Dumbledore visits Wool’s Orphanage to offer Tom a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During their meeting, Dumbledore informs Tom about the existence of the wizarding world and his magical heritage, and Tom, who had already sensed his own powers, is intrigued by the prospect of attending Hogwarts.
At the time, Tom was an 11-year-old orphan who had exhibited signs of magical abilities, but he was also known for his manipulative and cruel behavior towards the other chi*ldren at the orphanage. On the outside, Tom looked fairly innocuous, but underneath was a brooding dark force that would stop at nothing to cause pain and suffering to others.
This encounter between Dumbledore and Tom Riddle is significant, because it marks the beginning of their complex relationship throughout the series. It also highlights Dumbledore's role in the early life of one of the most dangerous dark wizards in history.
Right from the very beginning, from their very first encounter, Dumbledore was cautious and wary of the young boy- sensing Tom’s dark nature and potential for evil. Despite all of the warning signs, however, Dumbledore proceeds to offer Tom a place at Hogwarts- hoping that the school and new environment would help shift Tom’s life in a more positive direction.
All of this is shown to Harry via the pensieve, the purpose of which was to give Harry a sense of context for the task that he would later give him, and the memories that he would later show him. He wanted to give Harry an idea of the troubled boy that lord Voldemort once was, show him that Tom Riddle was once a student much like him, and show him how his path of darkness began.
But my question is: how did Dumbledore, who we are led to believe is particularly intelligent and strategic, suffer such a massive oversight in assessing Tom Riddle’s nature?

After first meeting Tom, it was pretty evident there were rather dark tendencies from the young boy, but I always found this scene to show more insight about Dumbledore than Tom. It's a pretty basic backstory for a villan, but it shows how Dumbledore chose to see the possibility of good in someone if given the chance. A boy of about 11 having such a bleak childhood would indeed lash out, but I'm certain Dumbledore saw a chance of Tom growing into a caring person and perhaps even a protégé, and maybe even the slightest part wanting a future partner for Hallow hunting again

I think that Dumbledore realized that there was something seriously wrong with Tom Riddle, but he couldn't fathom how deeply warped he had become in his short life. It could be that Tom was so good at deceiving people, that even Dumbledore was fooled into underestimating the potential threat that Tom Riddle posed. At his core, Dumbledore was a nurturer, whereas Tom Riddle was a master of deception.

It is true that Voldemort only used the dark parts of magic and was blind to the others. Via statements his natural ability and innate power was above everyone, but he limited himself due to his personality. Love is an actual power in Harry Potter, such an emotion would make him more powerful. Dumbledore would have been completely surpassed imo

It is known in the Wizarding World that a child conceived when one or more of their parents is under a love potion, will be born incapable of love. There should be laws against that sort of thing - send the one who made/administered the love potion to Azkaban, if you can prove, via legilimency that they intended to create a child this way. Also, do not allow the child to learn magic. Forbid them from learning, and anyone else from teaching them. It sounds harsh, but just look at how Voldemort turned out, and at all he did!

A different alternative for Dumbledore could have been to perform a very strong Obliviate Spell and an equally strong Confundous Spell on young Tom Riddle, and then put him in St Mungo's hospital on the incurable ward. Dumbledore could have even waited until after he took Tom to get his own wand and then used Tom's wand to cast the spells. That way his actions could be covered up, he would not be a child killer, Voldemort would never come to power, and Dumbledore would still be free to defeat Grindelwald.

I think explore the secondary timeline a bit. Have the foster family similar to the Weasleys conflict with his natural thirst for power. Honestly? He then becomes a mirror for Dumbledore and Percy Weasley. They both put their own families aside for their own ambition. Tom Riddle could still become Lord Voldemort, but somehow with more dimension, realizing similar to a Sith in pre-Disney Star Wars that his attachments are holding him back from power but in death they become his strength. An inversion of the loss. That he becomes a guy wanting to prevent those he cares about from dying, but in his quest he becomes the monster. An Anakin Skywalker tragic figure, somebody whom Harry could feel sorry for and try to redeem, even til their final clash, and upon his final moments does Voldemort understand: HE needed to make SELF-sacrifice if he wished his loved ones to continue on, NOT this dark path he took himself down. But too late. It is over. Sure it makes the story more in line with Star Wars, but I don't think the overall plot points change so much as the engine behind the antagonist.

I like to think Dumbledore would walk into Wool's Orphanage and materialize a muggle "metal wand", hit little Riddle with wizard special. Then he just strolls out of the room while casually popping a confundus charm in Mrs. Coles direction while placing the metal wand in her purse and with a wink, walks out of the Orphanage and disapparates to Honeydukes for some fudge.

Killing young Riddle, also known as Tom Marvolo Riddle or Lord Voldemort, at a young age may seem like a logical solution to prevent the chaos and destruction he caused in the wizarding world. However, it is important to consider that his emergence as a dark wizard was not solely a result of his own personal traits, but also a product of the circumstances and environment he grew up in. Riddle's early life was marked by abandonment, neglect, and a lack of love or guidance. Growing up in an orphanage, he experienced a profound sense of isolation and developed a deep-seated resentment towards those who had rejected him. These formative years played a significant role in shaping his character and fueling his desire for power and control. If young Riddle had been killed, it is plausible that another individual with similar or even more dangerous tendencies could have risen to power. The wizarding world, like any other society, is not immune to the emergence of individuals driven by ambition, greed, or a thirst for power. The conditions that allowed Riddle to become Lord Voldemort, such as the existence of dark magic and the presence of prejudice and discrimination, would still persist. Furthermore, the wizarding world itself is not without its own flaws and conflicts. The existence of pure-blood supremacy, the marginalization of certain magical creatures, and the power struggles within the Ministry of Magic all contribute to an environment ripe for the emergence of dark forces. Killing young Riddle would not address these underlying issues, and it is possible that another individual would exploit them to further their own agenda. Additionally, the prophecy surrounding Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort suggests that their destinies were intertwined. The prophecy foretold that "neither can live while the other survives," indicating that their fates were inextricably linked. If young Riddle had been killed, it is conceivable that another individual would have been marked as the chosen one, destined to confront and ultimately defeat the dark forces threatening the wizarding world. In conclusion, while killing young Riddle may seem like a straightforward solution to prevent the chaos and destruction caused by him, it is important to recognize that his emergence as a dark wizard was influenced by a complex interplay of personal experiences, societal factors, and prophecies. Another equally or even more perilous antagonist could have emerged in his absence, as the underlying issues and conflicts within the wizarding world would still persist.

Could Dumbledore have reported to the proper authorities Tom's ability to talk to snakes and then gotten some investigations launched into Tom's background discovering the ties to Salazar Slytherin? From there, maybe no one educates him on how to be a wizard (cultivating his talents was risky) and the Wizarding world keeps an eye on him while also landing him a loving muggle family. That removes the orphan killer option while also not giving Tom insights into what allowed him to do things to people and animals.

IMO The alternative to what actually happened is not „kill Tom“. It would have been to get him therapy or the magical equivalent and integrate him into a family - and an actually good one, not the Dursleys all over again. If he then continues on his path, commit him somewhere. The wizarding world seems very good at abandoning children to fend for themselves, as seen with Harry, Tom, Snape, and to a degree Neville, but I doubt seeing dark potential in someone prompts the decision to either leave them to their own devices or kill them off.

Dumbledore has two faults. The first is, he reminds one of some college professors who are well-educated but have no common sense. Aberforth alludes to this. Secondly, Albus can't stand the notion that some people are evil, and should be eliminated, which is why he couldn't kill Grindelwald during their fight. He thinks people should be given second chances, and more. Look at how many Death Eaters walked free under his nose after Tom fell to an infant Harry. Also, look at how he allowed Tom to stay at Hogwarts, where he could have reported what was taking place to the MoM and DMLE. Tom should have been placed in a psych ward at St. Mungo's. Tom was either a psychopath or a malignant narcissist; it's hard to tell which. A malignant narcissist has a small amount of empathy, and can feel a small amount of affection, which I think Tom showed toward Bellatrix. That's the only thing that separates a malignant narcissist and a psychopath. Plus, a malignant narcissist is more apt to have an inflated sense of self-worth and a need for admiration to an extreme extent than a psychopath. Both overlap and are from the dark triad, and both point to someone very dangerous. To be honest, Albus even showed signs of narcissism, which one could pick up when he was talking. He was bad to brag about how Harry need not worry about being attacked when with him. He also bragged about being smarter than most, and spoke about how his brother was uncultured and illiterate. That is how narcissists act.

There is no way DD could *know* Tom would become Voldy. If the future can be predicted accurately, that implies free will does not exist. But if Tom had no free will, and was "doomed" to become Voldy, then he cannot with any justice be regarded as morally responsible for the evil he did; beccause where there is no moral freedom, there can be no responsibility for one's acts. So Tom cannot be regarded as evil. He is as much a victim - of forces beyond his control - as those he kills. At most, DD might have some hunches, and intimations, about how Tom was likely to turn out. This interpretation seems to agree with what the books say.

I see no reason why a magical foster family couldn’t have had the same, or at least a similar effect on him.

Mayne not as powerful, but that's maybe, he was already practicing magic on his own, no teacher, doing feats like talking to animals , mind control, and many other things, no he was to powerful , without a wand, without any training, he was a force of nature. I actually question the need of wands for some wizards. Yes using them makes it easier and more focused, but someone like Tom may have found a way without an object. Of course he knew. One of the reasons why he went to the orphanage in the first place. He wasn't afraid when Tom told him stuf, nor was he surprised by his behaviour and collection, nor reaction when the wardrobe was on fire. Oh no. Dumbledore knew, and since he can read minds, he is well aware of Tom and his abmition. He had hoped that Hogwarts would mellow him. He always kept an eye on the kid, but did nothing. He was neutral in Grindwald and Voldemort, until he was forced to fight. He brought evil into the world knowing full well of the intentions. He refuses to admit to any of it, since thousands died because of him. Dumbledore has been manipulating the timeline since the 40s under his Grand Plan. It isn't clear on what his motive is...but there is a lot coming out about him that's changing a lot of things.

I'm inclined to think that if Dumbledore wanted to do away with Tom Riddle he could have done it without anyone knowing. Choice two would be to leave him. Either with his powers intact, or without. And if anyone would know how to short out someone's magic it'd be Dumbledore. Of course there is always the possibility Dumbledore realized the boy was beyond redemption and chose to take him to Hogwarts thinking he could manipulate the boy into causing a crises which Dumbledore could then swoop in and and be the dashing hero.

Dumbledore was not omniscient, and far too many Harry Potter What Ifs seem to operate under the assumption that he was. It's like asking how the seventh Harry Potter book would have gone if they had asked Dumbledore to examine a sinister locket they couldn't open while cleaning in the fifth book. Yes, he would have realized it was a Horcrux immediately and the seventh book would have been smoother sailing because they wouldn't have lost their safe house after a raid on the Ministry. But they had no way of knowing any of that. Anyways, Dumbledore knew that Riddle was well developed for his age and was a bully. Should he execute every badly behaved child he encounters in case they grow up to be Wizard Hitler?

Killing a kid as an adult male is always a thing. So he would have had a lot of problems doing that. Probably would still have been the best solution though. But, I do still think Dumbledore being very naief/ignorant, thinking he could help the boy, but still carefull if he couldn't.

He didn't actually try to help him personally,he just put him into Hogwarts. But they didnt really have the relationship Dumbledore would have with Harry. Dumbledore would just occasionally pop out to tell Tom that he is keeping an eye on him and treat him suspiciously

IF DUMBLEDORE KNEW THAT TOM RIDDLE I THINK HE WOULDN"T HAVE LET HIM ATTEND HOGWARTS . I THINK DUMBLEDORE SHOULD HAVE TRIED TO FIND A MAGICAL FOSTER FAMILY FOR TOM PREFERABLY WITH CHILDREN OF BOUT THE SAME AGE.

You forgot the third option. Dumbledore could have used Obliviate, The memory wipe charm on Riddle to erase his memories of the wizarding world. or perhaps augment his attitude in someway so he wasn't as big of a dickhead and sociopath as he had grown to be

I feel like Dumbledore groomed Tom into the role whether consciously or not

How would he explain that though? Murdering an eleven year old. 😂 It’s only because WE know what he became. Hard to justify though. It’s not like Dumbledore is omniscient either. 😂

So, was Dumbledore going to persecute Tom Riddle for what he might possibly become? Dumbledore had his suspicions, which is why he resolved to "keep a close eye on Tom". This speculation about what a fantasy person would do in a fantasy fiction book series is a waste of time. Find something more meaningful to do with your life.

I know its a what if but come on its really impractical! If Dumbledore cant even kill his own ex then what sense would it make for him to off an 11 year old boy 😂 also jude law is great at transfiguration so it seems... he went from grindelwald bester dumby to old man dumby before the duel... now THATS power, little tommy hasnt got a hope in hell 😂

Obviously "legilimens" was used and some memories seen in their first interaction. I do not believe he knew exactlu what type of child he was dealing with at the time.
