I'm having an issue with the check engine light I purchase the ECU I tried to put it in but it says I have to program it first so I ended up putting the old one back in there dealing with the issues on a cold start now it's pretty bad to where it's not staying on

I have a98 prelude non sh that got converted with the p28 ecu and got a trans swap to a 96 manual . my smog guy has to connect to ecu now and of course cannot read any data now that its obd1 . I guess the new way of smogging has made it more difficult. Now can i run a Honda ecu from ebay purchased for my make ,model and year and be good to go , or do i need to get it reflashed with my vin ??This would only be needed for smog then i would swap back. thanx
