I see a lot of you tubers say “a cord is x, or y, etc”. Everything you say here is 100% correct! It’s good to note that a cord is actually defined by law. The Texas Agricultural code actually defines it as “128 cubic feet, well ranked and stowed”. We define what a pound is, what a foot is, and so forth, but unfortunately not many people know that a cord carries a legal definition. I used to sell firewood and always sold by the correct measurements. Thanks for the content!

I have a 96 F250 with 8 foot bed and a trailer to match.. Up to the top of the bed (stacked) I can haul a half cord. With the trailer its 1 full cord.. So far I haven't had anyone complaining, but I have had a few give me complements on bringing them an honest cord.. Thanks for posting as someone out there will need this information..

Yesterday's price in my neighborhood was 110 delivered. This is for 16 inches by 48 inches high and 96 inches long tight stacked. That puts a true cord at 330 dollars delivered within ten miles. Fuel prices dictated a 10 dollar additional delivery fee. Stacking is another 20 per face. I've got a full size 3/4 ton truck with sideboards and a true cord of wet rounds is more than It can hold. If I cut maple that's about 4000 lbs net.

In Germany and Europe we use "Festmeter", which is a theoretical full cubic meter of wood. A "Raummeter" is a tightly stacked cubic meter of wood. A "Schüttmeter" is a cubic meter of thrown wood. 1 Festmeter = ~1.5 Raummeter = ~2.5 Schüttmeter. That's it. Seller will sell either Raummeter or Schüttmeter, so it is easy to know, what you get. Of course there are slight deviations in the conversion factor depending on type of wood and log length.

You touched on a great point there at the end: You can often get a much better price for your wood, if you buy a year in advance. If you have the space to stack it, and let it sit and season. As an added bonus- you're not likely to run out and be at the mercy of whomever. It's the last minute, and emergency buyers who get the shaft most often- esp if you're a one time buyer to this seller. Firewood is a long lead time item- it takes around a year for good split hardwood to fully season. Some, like Oak, can take up to 2 years! No seller has an unlimited amount of perfectly seasoned wood on hand, and if it's the middle of the winter-they may have none at all, having sold out already. As for species, the question you need to answer, before you start making phone calls is: What do you need it for? The wood "everyone" says is best: Oak, Hickory, Locust is best for HEATING. You'll pay a premium price for it, too. Special aromatic woods, like cherry, apple, hickory for smoking can also fetch premium prices. If that's what you need, get it. If you don't- say you want it for recreational fires , you can afford to be much more flexible. Woods "everyone" says are junk or garbage, are often the best choice for that! And they will cost you a lot less. Pine/spruce; poplar; basswood; cottonwood; aspen; soft maple- all make great campfire wood. They burn hot and bright- just what you want, right? You aren't trying to heat a house, or need a fire that'll burn all night without having to add more every couple hours- you just want a nice cheery fire to sit by, and enjoy the company, the night sounds, or the peace and quiet. Save yourself some $$ and buy the "mixed wood" or "campfire wood". If you want that classic campfire smell, and like the crackle and popping sounds, get the pine and spruce. * all of this assumes you live in a part of the country where there are a wide variety of different species growing. Where you live will determine what is readily available for you.

YEP! Buy mixed. 1/2 seasoned and 1/2 green. Plenty of sellers around. Just make sure you support your family owned local folks. They're in business for a while for a reason. In TX, word travels fast with us old timers and we spread the word. TX is self sufficient and support each other. I go to other states and earn my trust! I'll just leave it at that as this country is so divided and sensitive. I do handshakes and my bankers deal with the contracts if I don't have that relationship.

Wood heat......used to be a great way to keep you home warm economically. I live in northern Minnesota. This is my 21st season running an outdoor wood boiler. I wouldn't have it any other way. But it can be expensive. I am lucky to have 35 acres to harvest wood from....and I do. But I also purchase wood. I just had 12 cords dropped off, and that is true 4ft x 4ft x 8ft delivered at $100.00 per cord. It was 4 cords of birch and 8 of red oak. Green....cut right off the stump and brought to me in the same week. It is too wet to burn this year. So, what to do...harvest dead, standing, dry trees....I've been burning punky popple, elm, and spruce.....And I have been going through a lot of wood....New Years Day it was -25F with a windchill of -40F......Here is my take on firewood..... Even if you plan on buying wood, have all the equipment to harvest your own wood. A chain saw, peavey, ax, bow saw, sledge, wedge, splitting maul, limbing ax, and splitting ax....plus the supplies to maintain them. Oh, and a come-along and or tow ropes..... You may not have a lot of wood available to harvest on your own land, but put the word out and someone always has a dead tree, downed tree from a storm, or wants to remove a live tree. You might even be able to negotiate a "disposal" fee to haul away all that wood "cluttering" up a nice manicured yard..... Also, there is a lot of good, kiln dried wood that gets tossed away, wood for pallets and crating. Or if you keep your stove pipe cleaned, hit dumpsters at construction sites, for end boards. Just watch for old lead paint or chemically treated wood. Yup, about 30 miles from my home is a pallet factory, and they make pallets out of red oak....kiln dried. Other places to get wood are from a logger, ask them about less marketable species, you make be able to take it off their hands at a pretty good price. Or find out about taking wood off a landing site on a recently vacated cut....Check with foresters on county, state, and federal lands, they may be able to direct you to slash piles on logging sites. Often you need permit, and it is free or relatively inexpensive. Some of my best firewood comes in the spring, I live on a small river and wood is always being washed out in the the spring flood....and that being said, if you can find an area with an active beaver colony they are a great source of wood that has had the bark removed, allowing for rapid seasoning. And lastly, you can never have enough wood....not once in 21 years of burning wood, have I ever said, "yup that will last".....because you never know when your primary wood harvester in the family will have a heart attack like I did in the summer of 2020....not fun, and a real source of anxiety...... Keep your saw sharp and stay warm. Dave

I came to KZfaq looking for a visual of a cord. What great information for people that buy wood. I've been cutting and splitting wood for my mom's wood stove for several years now. The barn has a dark brown metal roof. Using a moisture meter, I have found it only takes a few days for split and properly stacked wood to season in the loft. When daytime loft temperatures reach at least 130 degrees summer is a fantastic time to season the next year's firewood. Even with outdoor temperatures in the 70s the loft can get pretty warm. By the time Tennessee gets into the 90s it's a wood seasoning dream.

Hi, I live in NW Arkansas. Most important thing I can think of is don't try to burn high moisture content wood because the smoke will not be hot enough and will condense on the inside of the pipe. This effectively builds a layer of flammable creosote inside the pipe and is why catastrophic flue fires happen. If I burn very dry wood, I never have to clean my flue, although I still check it fairly regularly. A stove that suddenly starts smoking the house up every time the door is opened is a good sign you need to check the flue, as it isn't drawing properly for some reason. Wood stoves are actually pretty safe, in my opinion, if they are installed and operated properly.

Where I live in southeast Alaska a cord is a cord, 4×4×8. Wood is abundant as water. Its soft wood, hemlock, spruce, pine, or cedar, both yellow and red. The only hard wood here is alder. We do have a little bit of cotton wood but it sucks because its wet as the ocean and takes a few years to cure enough to burn. I've burned them all, but prefer yellow cedar and hemlock. I usually don't get my years wood until fall. The yellow cedar is ready to burn as soon as you fall a green tree. It has lots of pitch and burns hot. That's what I use to get a good bed of coals. Then I throw in the hemlock as it burns slower, last longer. Once I split and stack the hemlock it's ready in just a couple months. It's not cured by any means but dry enough. I've been heating my house with a wood stove for 40 years and never had a creosote problem. The trick is to always have a hot fire. Most people here get their own wood but less able folks buy it. If you try and pass off less than a cord as a cord, you'll be lucky to ever sell anymore. It's a small town and word about your business gets to the end of main street before you do.

I like your videos and have really learned so much. I live in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, so wood burners are not common but are becoming increasingly so despite rumours of government legislation to restrict their use for environmental reasons. It is very common to see internet or local notices from people who have had trees felled and invite you to help yourself to the wood, to save them the cost of disposing of it. Occasionally I have even been paid for felling the tree and removing the wood. Of course you need to clean up any mess left behind, but it is a small cost for keeping your house warm.

I cut my wood 16" and my wind stacks are 4'x24'. When I sell someone a half cord they can't believe it. I have a lot of Douglas fir, some wild cherry, maple and alder. It amazes me that people never look up what a cord is. Prices went up since 3 years ago though. I can easily get 150 a half. Gas is crazy high here, not to mention how long it takes to grow a tree and how much work goes into getting it out of the woods. People buy it. In fact I could sell daily here if I had that much wood.

Good video! Around here in NWPA I see people selling by the cord, by the rick, by the truck bed etc. I just sell it by the face cord (or 1/3 of a cord) because Im mostly selling to city properties that don't have the room for a full cord all at once, plus I always throw on a couple more arm fulls to makes sure. I try to limit my Oak inventory for now due to it taking up so much room and takes a long time to dry but yes, Oak and Locus are the hottest burning wood there is. I'd say the most important thing is to make sure the wood is dry! I always split my stuff into pieces I can easily pick up and throw with one hand and those size splits dry very quickly. I got a load of Maple that was initially in the 30's for moisture percent and after splitting 4 weeks later I stacked and checked and the highest reading I got was 19.7% but it's been warmer and sunny and my shop lot always has a breeze.

Hi, from Lawrence in southern NH. A long time ago, at the beginning of time, I believe without exception, firewood was cut and "stacked" in the woods where it was found. It was piled 4ft. high (maybe 4ft 4in to allow for drying) in 8ft "long" piles. fractions of the 8ft piles _OK. Of course, the wood itself was in 4ft lengths. Then after drying (usually) in the woods it would be brought out on a "scoot" pulled by oxen, horses, and later tractors. Here is the issue - there's a multiple of factors affecting the heat value, size to fit the stove or furnace, convenience to those involved, type of wood, and moisture content. etc. Here is my point - it's not just buyer beware or seller beware but few people, I believe, have any idea how much variance there is. For example, a volume of large round pieces of wood can double in volume when split. [96 cu, ft. large un-split stove length wood can turn into 128 cu. ft.] When 4 ft is sawn into stove length and thrown into a pile the pile can grow to be 160 cu. ft. When thrown into a box or truck bed the same cord can grow into various volumes as the size of the box changes. {error is less as the box becomes larger} What was once a cord of 4 ft. wood diminishes by losing saw kerfs and stacking as straighter wood in a much smaller space. larplarry@gmail.com

I am sure others have mentioned this, but the biggest thing I learned was to buy green wood, or to cut, split and stack my own, long before I will need it. I like to have wood stacked for three years, but I also stack a few cords deep in a woodshed. I have three that will hold 17 cords in total. Right now, one is almost half full, for 2025-26, and I have wood split and dry for the next two winters already. I am working on filling that last shed, and hope it will be done soon. Still, I find wood does not really dry during a northern New England winter, as it is too cold. The water in the wood is frozen. And the word "seasoned" is pretty meaningless. How dry is it, measure, if buying.

Great video brother -- > Know your measurements (4ft x 4ft x 8ft = 128 sq ft) -- Many delivery companies can fail to get you proper amount. > Know length you need for your wood stove or fireplace & what you want. If lengths aren't 16in or 24in that give a pretty clear stacking measurement, the (4ft x 4ft x 8ft) will be slightly different to get the 128 sq ft. > Buy a moisture meter & know what to look for (15-20% is good for burning right away) -- If too dry, you may blow through firewood too fast (dead trees make harvesting firewood quicker, but sometimes that can result in a very DRY wood, if seasoned for a full year before burning. It isn't a terrible thing -- again, you just might burn through a cord of super DRY wood much faster, thus, will need a bit more wood quantity than you normally need. ~ You should of shown the viewers the moisture content of your new wood purchased to explain why it isn't seasoned & may not be ready for burning right away. Many folks don't understand. You could get that wood burning in a jam; but you loose so much heat as the moisture in the wood pulls away the heat with it while it burns in your wood stove, or fireplace. Therefore you don't get great BTU's. ~ Moisture reading of the OAK log you have sitting in the yard unsplit would have been neat to hack that open into firewood pieces & show the difference between moisture level on "seasoned ends" VS the interior, which as you said will have dramatically much more moisture. People need WIND & SUN to dry firewood (unless you're lucky enough to purchase from someone with a kiln -- that is best bc it drys to exact moisture needed & can kill off any naturally hibernating bugs -- spiders, wood roaches, beetles, ect... It's natural, but always bugs in wood, so don't stack indoors unless going to burn right away). If covered on top of wood (not fully tarped all the way to the ground) -- so wind can pass through often, as well as hopefully sun, then you will get seasoned wood much quicker. If you're stacked inside, or heavy shade, or thick wooded area, it may take longer to dry your split wood. Air flow is most essential -- Again, direct sunlight also helps. > Firewood soaks up moisture from ground (so, stack on pallets or some sort of frame or built wood shed > Firewood soaks up moisture like a sponge in general, from fog, rain, snow -- that's why it's important to have top of stacked pile covered with tarp or roofing of some sort -- But, NEED the airflow for constant drying ~ You can get firewood that develops mushrooms & mold & other competing fungus more often if stacked incorrectly in shade, wet areas, or on the ground, because it doesn't dry the way it needs to. > knowing the Species of wood is essential -- Know the BTU's of various trees -- easy to find list online & print out & have on hand if needed. Know how to identify OAK, ASH, Maple, Cherry -- knowing how to identify some easier species to spot by bark or interior wood color & grain, will help you make the best decisions & not get ripped off. ~ We have customers who want to pay premium price for top BTU wood -- While others are happy with discounted pricing for mixed hardwoods. Other clients have very low budgets & are happy to purchase seasoned Evergreen species -- These clients save a ton of money, because they only burn a few times for holidays & gatherings (Christmas, Thanksgiving, ect....) -- You can heat with any variety of wood, but can save money depending on your goal for burning. >> No matter what wood you burn. ALWAYS clean your chimney beginning of the season, right before you start burning. You never know what gunk is built up in the chimney from creosote & or animals, birds, who knows. Chimney fire can be a disaster. Easy to avoid with 1-2hrs of work, or hiring a professional for pretty cheap. ~ Depending on how often you burn, it may be beneficial to clean mid-season, if safe conditions -- And, end of season. Do some research, ask a professional. Once you do it once or twice, its super easy & will be a tremendous reduction in liability of a potential house fire. Thanks so much for the video brother!! I know it's a ton of work to make these videos, but showing a quick chart to display to folks the BTU variety you can get is helpful for new folks (I've been burning for 20yrs). Keep on burning.

A tip for the firewood sellers. The customer can inspect the load while it's still on the pickup (or trailer). Don't let that wood hit the ground before being paid. You don't want to deal with a customer trying to haggle after you've unloaded. If your load is honest there shouldn't be a problem.

Great video...I went to my firewood supplier and told him I wanted a true chord and he said no problem. He loaded 3 face cords into my trailer and charged me 1 face chord 3x. Moral to this story, every one knows what a true chord is, but if you want a true face chord for the price of a face chord, well you'll have to invest in a chainsaw and splitter and do it yourself!

@@lynardskynard8443 I don't want the past price. I understand inflation/rising production costs. Problem here is people are selling less than a true cord for the price of a true cord. Whatever the market sets as the price then that is what it is. I am warning those who are not as knowledgeable what the sizes are and to compare across suppliers. When I started looking 2 years ago some dude was selling a face cord (1/3 cord) for the same price as the common East Texas 2/3 cord. In Michigan, I could get a true cord across the board and all the prices were fairly close. That is the issue.

Yikes, that sounds complicated. In Britain we just buy bulk bags usually of one cubic metre - hard wood, soft wood, mixed. Size of logs negotiable. I tell my supplier I can't easily burn anything more than 13" long because I only have a small stove. He mainly complies and I chainsaw the ones that won't fit. Incidentally a bulk bag costs, around here, (north-east Wales) in Dec 2022, about £75 (around US $90) for seasoned hardwood. Prices are heading up, however, due to the fuel crisis and rising costs of gas and electricity.

Your explanation makes sense for Texas. At Steinhauser's they sell a "1/2 cord" on a pallet. It's closer to 1/3 of a cord if that. A true half cord won't fit on a pallet. Logs are 17-18 inches rather than 16, but they still don't stack wide enough and high enough to make a 1/2 cord once you stack them parallel rather than cross-wise (loose). It makes sense that they stack the pallets cross-wise for stability for shipping, but it adds a lot of air space. Buyer beware. I'm in the Houston area. Not much timber around so all the wood has to be shipped in. Odd to have a fireplace in Houston, but we have one and it is done correctly. It sits in the corner of the room rather than on the "good wall" where the big screen TV goes. I HATE houses where the fireplace (you really don't need in Houston) takes up the "good wall" and you have to mount the TV above the fireplace or put the TV in the corner or off to the side of the fireplace. Needless to say that's one of the big reasons we bought the house we did.

Take what ever outfit the wood comes in, figure out the cubic feet, divide it by 128, and that’s how much wood you have. HOW TO FIND NUMBER OF CORDS IN ANY SIZE RELATIVELY SQUARE STACK OF FIREWOOD Use a calculator. 1. Measure the stack in inches. Inches Wide or Deep X Inches Tall or High X Inches Long = a big number. Example: 36 in wide X 69 in tall X 156 in long = 387,504 cu inches. 2. Now divide 387,504 by 1728, (cubic inches in a cubic foot) = 224.25. 3. Now divide 224.25 by 128, (cubic feet in a cord of wood) = 1.75 cords of firewood.

The main part of our business is tree service work but we do sell a lot of firewood as well (mainly in September and October) here in Oklahoma. I think this is a good video however there's there's some important context missing... so many customers anymore want shorter firewood based on the way homes are built, for wood stoves, etc. We've actually been turned away bringing 18 to 20 inch wood several times the last five years because it simply wouldn't work. Our way around this is to sell what we call a 'rick' of wood of 4ft high x 8ft long @ 16 inches and then just add an extra bit to it.
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The point of the video is to inform the lay person of the difference in measurements and also what a true cord is, so the context is correct. 16" is the universal standard for a length of firewood, not 18 to 20 as the 16 will fit in a standard wood stove. This has been the norm for a very long time as the tradition cord measurement has been in place since at least the 17th century. It is not customer driven but manufacturer driven and historical. A rick cord is 1/3 of a cord and people need to understand that when pricing things out.

@George Vinson It's supposedly 3.5m, but a cord of wood seems to vary on what kind of cord you are measuring, is archaic by anyone outside of Merica, and is more difficult to break down or scale up for intermediate volumes. 2 of my boys are working in Alabama for a guy selling fire wood. I have no idea what they charge however they place 3 or more orders in a truck. Sounds like the guy is ripping people off. I know 1/3 of what each customer gets is green wood. The guy told my boys it is because that is what the customers want which will make their wood go farther. He also told them that after 1 week it is considered no longer green.

Wanted to update the my last comment. Speaking with my eldest son he said they do not sell cords of wood they sell racks. The rack measurement is how much will fit in the bed of a Toyota Tacoma ( can't remember the year.) The customers pay $125. For 2 rows of seasoned a 1 of green. Personally I think he is over charging. However he has made a name for himself (the boss Farmer Cliff) because other people selling fire wood are either selling all green or part green and not telling the customers. Some will also dump and leave. The customers find Cliff who tells the customers why their wood is not burning he also stacks the wood for each customer even if he has to haul it upstairs charging a wheelbarrow fee.

@@yahsomeacres7816 Thanks for the update. Very interesting. You are right, it is expensive for what they are getting.

@@yahsomeacres7816 There is another commenter on this video who lives in NW Alabama. He gets his wood from the Amish for a super amazing price. $50 per cord. That is a lot of wood for such a small amount. I think your boys could open their own business and put the rest of the competition out very quickly.
