What is a solar charge controller

People ask what a solar charge controllers is when they see the solar panels on the van. We use the Renogy 30 amp pwm charge controller that came with the kit. (Link below). This is our first custom van build. So, we're open to suggestions and questions on how to install solar in a van, or about the pwm solar controller. We've had the camper van for three years and love it. Solar just makes it better and getting the right solar charger is crucial.

This was very helpful! Thank you! I just bought a little camper trailer with this same controller already hooked up. But mine doesn’t have wires going out anywhere in the 3rd section of wire spots where the little lightbulb is. Do I need to worry that there’s no “out” wires connected?

I just bought a HQST 100 watt system for my van. Im super excited. Goimg down the rabbithole. Bought a cummuter car, my van is staying put. I love vans! Why rent for $1500 when i remt for $250 in the greatest location. Lol.

My load indicator is an auto model does that mean it just comes on at night or if a got a switch cood I turn it on that way

Is there a setting to change battery type to sealed, flooded, agm? Or does it automatically know what kind of battery is connected?

What happens if there's no sun? Will it hold a charge for a long time?

It will depend on the size of your batteries and the power that is being drawn. The panels will collect some light on even cloudy days. The batteries will hold for at least a couple of days if all we need is to charge laptops, phones, tablets and the like. I would expect weeks or more if nothing is being charged.

E1 is an error message. You'll need to Google your particular model to determine what that means for your manufacturer. It could be a simple issue and not catastrophic.
