Diabetic ketoacidosis (or DKA for short) is a life-threatening complication of type 1 diabetes. While not as common, it can also develop in type 2 diabetes. DKA can develop slowly prior to your diagnosis, or very quickly in a matter of hours if you don't have enough insulin in your bloodstream. If you think you're in DKA or headed towards DKA, call your healthcare team and go to your nearest emergency room. DKA cannot be treated at home!
