"The natural of competing to make something the 'shortest' by its very nature trivializes the activity being carried out, [...] as such, we have been forced to cease listing records for the shortest song, the shortest poem and indeed, the shortest concert" That means they fear that people use the facts as trivia, that's why they avoided the record

@@tess7758 I was more thinking some people don’t know they’re about to die, so they don’t know that what they’re saying are their final words, hence they don’t really count as final words. They are technically final words in the sense that they are the last thing the person said, but I think they are only really final words if the person saying them knows that they are the last words they’re ever going to say and are using them as such. Otherwise those words often aren’t as meaningful.

There was a poem called "Soldati" by Giuseppe Ungaretti. It reads: "Si sta come D'autunno Sugli alberi Le foglie" I wrote it in italian but it pretty much means: "we stay Like leaves On trees In Autumn" It described the state of soldiers in wars. This poet, in fact, fought WW1.

The shortest poem would be any background. Why? The background (commonly white background) is an important feature of any symbolic literatures. It represents the "silence" as no one makes any sound when encountering it, and it rhymes as it would be a repetition of a sequence of 1 note. Moreover, there are a lot of meanings behind an "long" repetition of silence. It's basically a sound symbolism at its finest. In addition, the background is also what allows our eyes to make constrasts with the drawn lines so that we can identify the letters. From that we can make "2D" letters and generate backgrounds on a letter, and the letter would be embedded in a greater background, and repeat that pattern. I believe that's peak poetry.

One of my favorite written lines that i got off like tumblr or something is someone did this WHOLE monologue about brevity, and about how they can't write short poems because they NEED to elaborate on everything, and they can't stop talking. Someone replied to it with the entire post again, but everything was blacked out except for the line: 'I want to distill myself the way poets do.' Now that's my primary poetry strategy. Just write a bunch of brain vomit and then pick out the most compelling lines- trim out the fat so the audience can fill in the gaps. It certainly works.

I personally think one of the most poignant uses of silence in recent media that was pretty mainstream was in Bill Wurtz video History of Japan. When he went over the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by just showing a list of "cities that exist" and crossing them off after an explosion and ball of light on the map that fades into a few moments of total silence for you to soak in what happened and think about what it means to you. Everyone knows the bombings were rough, but the fact it has been drilled into us by the school system since a young age really mitigates the import of it. Having it simplified and recontextualized with no elaboration but silence for us to bask in was a really great move on his part.

Came back here because one of my favourite rappers Pharoahe Monch made a song with his band called "666 (Three Six Word Stories)", inspired by the story attributed to Hemingway. Only became familiar with the song recently, despite it being out for almost 2 years. Monch put these three six-word stories at the end of the song: - "I breathe like oxygen is expensive." - "Don't be offended. I am defensive." - "I love you. Take care, intensive."

Making inferences on poetry is a common mistake. While this could be an interpretation, they never mention an older brother or the shoes meaning anything at all. It is simply a six word poem describing baby shoes that were never worn. How do we know that these shoes are even a memento in the first place? When factory’s make shoes they aren’t worn until they’re sold.

In Czech, we have a similar one, about what happened to a mushroom after it rained. It's "Masák nasák." Means "a blusher soaked up (water, only implied)" It's a poem that's hard to translate because of the structure of our language. I still think it's interesting.

I like how he doesnt say “and as always thanks for watching” just to show us exactly how powerful silence is. We knew what he was saying without him saying anything

I interpreted the silence as the power of not saying something we'd expect and are used to, still, for the reason of showing the power of silence. Interesting how poetry is depicted differently by others. I guess it shows how different brains work.
