What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To Fix It

Constipation is an often uncomfortable and extremely prevalent condition affecting close to 80 million people. And while constipation might be common, it is definitely not normal and it can have disastrous consequences. Having healthy digestion and eliminating waste every day (ideally twice or three times a day!) is critical to your overall health. Your liver flushes out toxins and dumps them into your intestines. However, if your digestive system isn’t working optimally, then all those toxins and waste can get reabsorbed into your body. So, it makes sense that constipation has been linked to multiple diseases, including cancer and even Parkinson’s disease, plus it actually makes you feel like crap!
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the importance of getting to the root cause of constipation. They share information on the most common drivers of constipation including diet, chronic stress, antibiotic overuse, and a wide range of many other issues.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health - a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

In the 1980's and 1990's, ALL OF MY FAMILY PHYSICIANS who were all licensed medical doctors (MD) told ALLLLLL of our family members that bowel movements 2x a week is sufficient and NORMAL. These were all conventional medicine doctors. That includes pediatricians, emergency room doctors, internal medicine doctors, etc. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 Need we ask why we don't trust family physicians in America????? "Name it, blame it, and drug it." This doctor in this video is spot on!!! It wasn't until I met a random iridologist in my mid 20s that I was told humans should have a BM after every meal which makes sense. That is what a healthy and happy GI tract is designed to do, but American conventional medicine doctors are full of crap!!!!
@kurtbecker3827
@kurtbecker3827 Жыл бұрын
--- Need we ask why we don't trust family physicians in America?????---- So true... When it comes to bowel movements, I heard anything from "2 to 3 times a day" to "only once a week". I personally would be happy with "once a day"... actually "after every meal" does NOT make sense, in fact I have never met a single person, EVER, who has a #2 after every meal. The truth is, like always "somewhere in between" or it "depends on a lot of circumstances". If you keep researching this very same issue, you will find that 50% of doctors advocate dietary fiber for regularity, while the other 50% claim that fiber (soluble or otherwise) causes constipation... now what? Do whatever works for you, but getting it wrong the first time, can have SERIOUS consequences and permanent damage to your colon.

What about a child born with constipation? His stools were firm from day one, and he was breastfed. I don’t recall him passing meconium unless he did it in the hospital nursery. He was tested for hirschsprung , and celiac, nothing wrong there. Dairy and refined carbs makes him worse but even when we eliminate them completely he doesn’t get better. He’s 8 now and lives on laxatives. This is not any way to live for a child.

Make sure his stomach has the raw ingredients to make stomach acid as per Dr. Joel Wallach, ND and Dr Jerry Tennant, MD: 1) Iodine, 2) B-1 3) Real Salt 4) liquid zinc ... taken first thing in the morning, add apple cider vinegar to aid ph for absorption. H-Pylori can be an issue for half of people - mastic gum often works best. Also, sulphur in the form of MSM for bile formation. Silica from red ocean algae helps the intestines lower inflammation and repair. Every disease has a mineral deficiency involved. Not even these guys look at mineral deficiencies first and every time. Check out Dr Gundry, MD as his info and supplements are only things that finished solving my constipation after decades on research, diets and supplements.

Many people are taking Zn to help the immune system/thyroid which competes with Cu. Cu helps the connective tissues/gut lining. It is not just gluten/Lyme hurting the gut lining, but also low Cu. Orthobiotic probiotic before a meal may help and HCl and enzymes with meals. If the liver/kidneys shut down then bile may come out to help bowel movements. Taurine may help make bile. Hidden gluten in common and may destroy the gut lining. Gluten is in wheat/barley/rye...oats/corn/rice. Rice is low in gluten. Wild rice has no gluten. Nuts not sold in the shell/meat basting/some spices/air/lotions/food with a label/gluten free food may have hidden gluten. LDN may help, but maybe too strong and then people take it in the day when it is weaker. Slippery elm/glutamine/Aloe/Vit A/green tea and more may help heal the gut lining once gluten is 100% stopped.

I cannot take laxatives they just give me vicious cramps and i dont pass anything. Im scared that my bowel might perferate or ill get C or something. Lazy bowel and stomach is a whole diff level of constipation. My stools are rock hard and im very sick and overloadded with toxins. Has anyone else got this? That's really serious and I would definitely seek out and work with a functional medicine doctor. Meanwhile, I would avoid all grains/gluten and also all dairy and, of course, sugars, processed foods, junk food, etc. Focus on easy to digest foods, high quality foods, anti-inflammatory foods. Chew food very well. To detox bowels: Mag07 (ozonated magnesium) works wonders to relieve constipation and cleanse/detox the bowels. No cramping and non-habit forming.

Does genetics play a part? Dad, grandma, aunties cousins everyone on dads side 'got it'. No matter how many apples, pears and prunes, & foods with roughage, that is eaten, nothing works. How do you treat constipation naturally without 15:16 the laxitives and pills if its gentically past down?

I used to have really normal and healthy bowel movements I mostly follow a paleo diet but suddenly out of nowhere began experiencing chronic constipation for like a month ?then it suddenly went away then it came back briefly? had no changes to my diet or lifestyle i exercise regularly so it was super weird ... any idea what could cause that ?! I'm young so I'm not sure why , maybe stress ?

I'm always surprised when Dr. Hyman talks about things like constipation, gut inflammation, putrefaction in the intestines, etc. but never addresses the fact that all these problems can be caused directly by meat in the diet. Even though he is a fan of grass-fed, organic beef, these problems can be caused by beef--and other animal products--even when produced under those conditions.
