Following the release of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis in 1991, Sega, along with the newly-formed Sonic Team, experienced a lot of success. The game sold millions, and managed to ship truckloads of Genesis units. While the console, also known as the Mega Drive overseas, initially seemed it would end in lukewarm market performance as Sega's other home console ventures had, Sonic arrived on the scene and immediately changed that. As with any game that does well, a sequel will inevitably follow, and that was certainly the case with Sonic. However, development of Sonic 2 would be wrought with infighting and conflict, as well as heavy crunch that made it seem the game may never be finished on time. In the end though, it was, and it released just in time for the 1992 spring/summer season. It would go on to surpass even Sega's expectations in sales, and the rest, as they say, is history.
To this day, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains one of the series' most beloved games. Last time around, I talked about why I liked Sonic so much, using the first game as a jumping-off point. That said, the game wasn't perfect, and had some things I thought could've been improved. And that's where Sonic 2 comes in. Yeah, no hot takes today, fellas. As the title says, I think Sonic 2 is not only a good sequel, but a great one. Why is that? Well, strap in and prepare yourself for the next 42 minutes as I explain why Sonic 2 remains one of my favorites in this long-running series.
