The Hub World: a central, interactable, story-driven environment that brings together smaller levels and serves as a home for the player. When executed well, they provide a game with cohesion and unity, but when done poorly, they feel clumsy and needless. This begs the question: what makes a good hub world? Join me and a very special guest as we delve into answering this question - from Peach's Castle to the Comet Observatory, Rogueport to Flipside and Timber's Island to... Springfield?

The Super Mario Galaxy games really captured the gradual decline of hub worlds into simple, streamlined level select maps. All of the ones covered here are just fantastic, but Rogueport is definitely one of the most memorable. I always appreciated its grittier flair and how it was a community bustling with the Pianta mafia! 🎉

Haha too true, the run-down vibes of Rogueport are hard to match! It's a shame that a lot of games are moving towards level selection maps, but with 3D platformers making a bit of a comeback, maybe we'll see more hub worlds in future!

Station Square, Mystic Ruins and Egg Carrier from Sonic Adventure will always have a special place in my heart, especially the latter two with how expansive they feel. I remember first playing the GameCube version in 2013 and just staring at the skybox when it changed to the evening. Sunset Station Square and Nighttime Mystic Ruins are just beautiful. Being able to change the Egg Carrier, thus changing the hub world layout, will always be cool and getting to explore Eggman’s living spaces is charming. Some other hub worlds that stick out in my mind includes: - Gruntilda’s Lair and the Isle O’ Hags (Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie) - Sentinel Island and Haven City (Jak & Daxter and Jak II) - Bikini Bottom (SpongeBob: BFBB) - Springfield (Simpsons: Hit & Run) - Mystic Manor exterior (Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights)

I need to get around to playing the Sonic Adventure games at some point, I've heard good things! Love the Isle O' Hags as well - the concept of this whole world existing just beyond Spiral Mountain was always so cool to me.

There are many videos on this subject but I've found this one to be the best. There are so many examples of games and differences in what a hub world is/does here. I'm researching this topic to better my own hub world; I'd say Banjo Kazooie and that racing game are the most what I want to go for. The inclusion of the clips definitely makes me want to go play those games also. Thanks for making the video. :)

Thanks for the kind words, it means a lot! Gruntilda's Lair has to be one of the best 3D platforming hub worlds ever made, Rareware did an amazing job with that one. Best of luck with making your game!
