Jadon Sancho has not been included in the England squad for the World Cup. What's even more surprising than his omission, is he wasn't even in the conversation.
After signing for Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for £73 million in July 2021, he has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League and finds himself with just 8 goals and 4 assists in 52 games.
Once one of Englands brightest young talents who played under Gareth Southgate at Euro 2020, Jon Mackenzie looks at what has caused this fall from grace.

He's 22 years old. United have not been a good team for the vast majority of the time he's been there. I'm still confident his time will come. Garnacho is objectively not a better player but is doing well because of confidence.

He might not be a better player overall but he has more raw pace and flair than Sancho does. As the video points out, Sancho at Dortmund was not the type of player that would beat his man regularly or spend much time at the by-line. He would drift centrally and unlock defences through killer passes. He still tries to do the same thing at United and has had some limited success. For instance, when he scored against Liverpool early in the season, he drifted centrally. When he scored against Leicester it was through some good link-up play with Rashford but not through him moving along the by-line. When he scored in a Europa league match (can't remember which one) he also drifted centrally. The most recent assist I can think of was also in a EL game and he was close to the box as well. So it seems like he does need better chemistry to work well in this team.

Garnacho is also 4/5 years younger than him so I'd hope he's not better. They also just play so differently. Honestly Sancho is not a winger, he's a cam or wide midfielder and everything in the stats and play show it

I still believe in Sancho, one of my favourite players to watch when he was at Dortmund so creative and such a livewire with the ball at his feet. The quality he showed at Dortmund was incredible and I'd not seen goal contribution numbers like it from a young English player, numbers wise you could say he was one of the best attackers in European football during his time in Germany. While I did anticipate a bit of a drop off when he joined United ,especially during his first season, I didn't expect such a large dip in form and I really hope he's able to show his proven quality at United soon

The guy just looks unathletic. He isn't explosive, he can't beat a man, most of the better teams have fullbacks / wingbacks who can easily cover him. He reminds me of the sorry sight we often see with ageing once-great players when injuries and wear and tear leave them looking like they're running in lead boots.

The bits I saw of him at Dortmund had him more often than not creating in the half spaces or in the space occupied by a traditional number 10 even if he started out positionally as a winger. At MU, he's being played as an out and out winger tasked to get to the byline or to take on the defender, which is not his strong suit. As some others have pointed out I would give him a try in the number 10 when Bruno needs a rest or is out of form.

@dafunkyshit
@dafunkyshit Жыл бұрын
Exactly - I saw some highlight videos of him at Dortmund and he was always drifting centrally. He is more of a 'wide playmaker' style of player. I think he can still offer a lot to this team. He has a lot of versatility and that is always an asset. It is too early to write him off but right now it is not looking good for him on the LW with Rashford and Garnacho both in form. He should be explored as a CAM or played more on the RW when Antony is unavailable.

I think when Bruno is out, Sancho would be a better option than van der Beek at the 10. Our midfield desperately needs a dribble threat, McTominay is the only strong dribbler in our midfield, so Sancho could give us a different dynamic there.
@dafunkyshit
@dafunkyshit Жыл бұрын
@@LeeHusk19 Yeah dribbling and ball-carrying is what we need there. If Sancho can work on his fitness levels and work-rate (he looks quite tired after being on the pitch for like 45 minutes+) then it could be a possibility. The main issue is that he does not see green grass in front of him anymore. At Dortmund, many of the opponents were all gung-ho and leaving spaces all over the place. Most of United's opponents are much more disciplined and therefore Sancho does not have the same opportunities to run at defenders. He also seems to be unable to play with any sort of urgency, which make it easy for the fullback to get support.

I think it is unfair on players, how the game has started to cement a players identity and style at such an early stage of their career, yes the way Sancho used to play at Dortmund is not ideal for what ten Hag needs from him right now, but he is a coach/ manager who has made skilled players modify and develop to fit in his system, or find a way to utilise specific abilities of players. Sancho is a talented young player, although his physicality, was not up to Premier League level, and i r ckon he is talented enough to modify his game, we might see a evolution in his style in coming months that might suit the team better.

Interesting video. As a United fan, it is clear that he still plays in a similar kind of way here as he did at Dortmund. Great at link-up play and is a composed finisher as well. He has actually been somewhat successful with his penetrative passing into the box against low-block teams but lacks a lot of confidence and consistency. He doesn't have explosive pace unlike Rashford and now Garnacho, to beat his man. The video fails to mention that he can also be played as a right-winger as well. Obviously being right-footed, he is not going to invert/cut inside relative to our first-choice left-footed RW Antony but he has shown more glimpses of creativity when he plays on the right hand side. It would have been interesting to have seen an analysis on his playstyle when he has played on each side of the wing, for this season so far.

He’s playing in a team that doesn’t have strikers with good movement. Erik ten Hag likes runners off the ball, Manchester United do not have a luxury of players who do that or can do it effectively. At Dortmund he was playing with willing runners and clever players, that’s why he bagged so many assists. Haaland was running in behind, Reus was and even Alcacer did, which is why he bagged so many goals there (Alcacer). Sancho makes things happen if other players present that opertunity. He’s not like Sterling or Rashford who will use pure pace to beat player. Jadon is more about movement on and off the ball, 1-2’s, triangles, killer passes. That’s Sancho’s game. If ten Hag can sign a striker and other players who are willing runners who don’t play behind the ball, then you’ll see a more creative and better Sancho. It’s a shame Martial is injury prone as his movement and link up play is very good. Sancho needs the right players around him, and United need to accomdate him, because he cost a lot of money and he can get you the goals and assists to change games.

I guess sometimes it´s also linked to the fact that not all young players understand that fame needs to be sustained and skills improved, you need to work extra hard on your own to improve certain parts of your game. While Messi was a natural he worked a lot on his own and even more so did CR7, but we do not need to look at the best world stars, Beckham could spend up to two hours after training trying to improve his freekicks. Sancho has lost a lot, it´s not only confidence, his technique and vision have deteriorated continuously and he often squanders simple passes.

Yeah he is not good at dribbling against low-blocks or beating them on the by-line but he has been decent at unlocking them from outside the box with his slick passing and one-twos.

that's not really true. Teams in the Buli usually sat back and just parked the bus against BVB with sancho and Hakimi back then. But he always had guys running into positions well which made him deadly or when he was allowed to cut inside and create. ManU is just using him wrong. just give him back for 20 mil or so

@@nathanielknight1838 Teams in bundesliga rarely 'sit back'. They are mostly aggressive and press high, so during transitions that lead to counter attacks, lot of space is offered to the runners. That is why there is a significant 'bundesliga tax' for players that move away from the German league. You can look at Werner as an example. It doesn't by many means signify that the league is better or worse than PL, just different playing styles.

As a United fans, i think Sancho is played better at the right wing. That's the reason why Ole brouht him, to fill the right wing position bcs United's wide players is more left wing type back then. But then Ten Hag chose to brought Antony to fill the right wing. To be honest i don't know why Ten Hag brought Antony when he has Sancho on that position. I can't see Sancho will playing much in the near future if Rashford or Antony is fit.

He was meant to come in and become number 7. Literally the front 3 would have been combinations of Rashford, Martial, Sancho, Greenwood and Cavani. They had no plan with Ronaldo. He became available and they only got him to prevent City having him. It’s not Ronaldo’s fault but him coming in really messed Sancho up the most after nearly two years of trying to purchase him he lost his number, place, manager and confidence.

ETH should try something like scaloni did in the final. Play asymmetric forwards. Play sancho like Messi, Rashford central forward like Alvarez, Antony winger like Di Maria. Diamond midfield tiki taka Casemiro - Eriksen - Bruno - Sancho.

At the Bundesliga he played against mostly attacking teams (it's a league now averaging almost 5 goals per match), so much more open gameplay and he was almost always a starter for BVB. Since arriving in the Premier League he's never played at his best position, nor been a regular starter. Physically he does not seem to be at his best level, and since Rangnick and now with Ten Hag it has never been clear what his role is supposed to be at United. I think it would be better for him to go on loan to a team where he can start most games and play in a role that fits his skills.

Great analysis. To phrase the conclusion another way, firstly, Jadon Sancho and his management team did not do their due diligence before signing with Man U, because Man U's playing system was in a mess when he joined. Secondly, Man U does not have the personnel to play a system that is in synergy with Sancho's strengths. Thirdly, one of the solutions that wasn't mentioned in the video is, Sancho should quit Man U and find himself another team. Finally, the real problem and the root of the problem is this: Sancho and his agent signed for the money, not for the football that Man U could/can offer. Classic way to waste a talent.

What's worse for Sancho is that his current bug contract runs until 2026/27. If situation on the pitch doesn't improve for him he will waste most of his prime sitting. He certainly won't leave anytime soon because of his good deal, and by the time he does leave I'm afraid it's already too late to turn things around

He's not played alot with martial, think he would help him alot. But personally from watching him, it's just a mentality and confidence issue. United have done quite a good job this season in getting him 1v1 with the fullback, and he just doesn't attack them, he always looks to pass, and it's mostly backwards. I'm confident he will come good

He'd fit into arsenal as the number 10 - Arsenal's wingers though are far more aggressive at running at defenders and stay quite wide. I think he would've suited Liverpool a few seasons ago as a winger.

His dribbling numbers are excellent, but part of the reason is that he only really tests them against players he thinks he can beat. I think that Sancho benefits from having Shaw behind him, as he overlaps more than Malacia does.

So, United bought a player that creates openings for left footed run makers... Of which they have one. They bought a player that didn't suit them then, doesn't suit them traditionally and doesn't look like he will suit them for the foreseeable. They should part ways whilst he can command a decent price.

I've been saying this and will keep saying this. If Sancho is to succeed at united, he should be converted into a 10 or a free 8. He has good link-up play and is a decent ball carrier. Plus he is best when he has players running in behind if him
