I agree with all of this and I love Pyke. I know it isn’t cohesive with his lore but his ban voice line, “My list just got longer” I think is pretty awesome.

I do like both interpretations and honestly if they add voice lines where he acknowledges control subconsciously like "I don't rememember yo- oh... right on my list..." It'd fix the ludonarrative disco biscuits. He can act suave, sarcastic and even aware that he's killin for cash but he needs lines that acknowledge he isn't in total control of himself and doesn't exactly understand how much control he has. This would also explain the clean clothes. "A man dresses sharp, as sharp as their dagger... why am I killin again... oh right the list".

I can actually see how the initial reveal/lore version of the character could develop into the in-game iteration. At some point Pyke realizes that his list isn't getting shorter, after all, even a mind as twisted as what he has been shaped into eventually has to contend with the fact that there are only so many people that can fit on a single fishing vessel. With this revelation come others, he begins to remember what happened after he was thrown overboard, not everything, but enough to piece together a basic picture of what happened. Teeth, yes, but also eyes, and voices of a sort. He remembers the Swimming City, and he remembers what happened to him, what is still happening to him. Of course, as soon as he remembers, he begins to forget. But as these last reclaimed vestiges of sanity are torn once again from his rotting mind by his abyssal masters, he manages to get a word in edgewise. Wouldn't he be more useful to them sane? Sure, without his wits about him he is still a useful weapon, but think how much more dangerous he could be if he knew the full picture? might he not turn on them, then? the voices, if one can call them voices, ask. he has been made to kill his own people, after all. As far as he can tell, they're the only thing keeping him alive. Besides, all he's really done is trade one employer for another. Captains asked him to kill fish, fish ask him to kill captains. Seems fair.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who thought that the in-game version of Pyke had something wrong with it in contrast with the teaser.

His voicelines seem to be a Pyke that's been at his thing for a long time and evolved far past his state in the teaser, one who has managed to collect his wits and scrounge together some form of lucidity, and yet still decides to keep killing. Like you mention in the video, his voicelines seem to indicate that he is closer to understanding the purpose the Sunken city gave to him, and something that stood out to me when I first listened to them was his voicelines towards allies. They imply a measure of restraint, when I think if he matched the personality in his lore story he would immediately attempt to kill his allies. I interpret that the way the people that designed his voicelines want people to see him as one who applies his mercenary mindset to his mission and is at this point more willing than teaser!Pyke to carry out the Sunken City's mission. Willing to work with friends, willing to share gold, as long as long term he kills more people. I agree with what you say though, the Pyke that exists in lore is more appealing as a character to me and loses a lot of uniqueness translating to the Rift. It is a similar disappointment that I had with Kai'sa, a high potential for uniquely flawed character given up for generic badassness.

Pyke's biggest flaw: He's too fashionable for a drowned man.

It's a case of creepy vs cool. Unfortunately, the character we wanted was the creepy one, because it's a pretty original idea for this game. Instead...we get yet another cool character. Which is fine, it's just...not unique.

His lore sounds like a better interpretation of Nautilus lore, that fits Pyke better cause its easier to do that kind of lore on a small humanoid character than the TITAN OF THE DEPTS. Man that tittle is so cool. Hope they dont screw his lore, and maybe tweak his kit a bit.

It's not fair to call old Pyke greedy, but "ambitious" sounds about right. Not ambitious in the "take over the world sense," but ambitious in the "do as much as I can" sense. His lore sounds _awfully_ similar to the old lore of a certain other hero...I mean, except more detailed and with an air of mystery. Speaking of which, I _love_ the air of mystery. I wonder all sorts of things about him, from what reanimated him to if that thing is directing him or if he's just a loose cannon. Though his voicelines do make some of that less ambiguous... From what you're saying about the disconnect between concept art and the final model, it sounds like the guys creating the in-game assets were going more by the concept artist's image than their ideas. That, or the concept artist wrote some detail-checks that the engine couldn't cash. My intuition is that, if there _was_ a change in vision, the more professional vision came first. Things like abilities, voice lines, and visual assets are _much_ harder to change if you change your mind than biographies and short stories, after all. Not to mention that the lore side is more intricate and unique than the game side...

In my opinion Pyke is really coherent. Before he died he was just a guy doing his thing, getting paid, killing what he has to kill, ambitious, but not greedy guy. After he died not much changed - instead of captains telling him what to do, there are voices in his head, instead of fish and beasts from the depths there are people from his list. He never was the "Main character" type of guy and after he died he still isn't. He is still the fisherman he always was. And this is imo really well preserved - in game he fights with a harpoon he's always used, he shares his gold because he still thinks that he's working for someone. I can't really argue with your opinion about the model - i think it would be really hard to make his mask more "soaked in blood" while still giving an impression od sharks teeth and STILL being readable in game. And I have to agree with you about the rest of his clothing. Its just too new and clean. But aside of his clothing I think he does look like he knows the difficulties of life and this way they tried to show that although he sunk but he's still on the board and he's still doing his thing.

One of his in-game lines is Quote on quote: Captains told me to kill fish, Fish told me to kill captains. So maybe the memories of various sea creatures flooded him and thats what drives him.

There have been similar disconnects: Kai'Sa, Miss Fortune, a bunch of the older champions, although, yes none have been THIS bad.

Hey T.B. could you do a “What’s the Deal with” for Taric? I love his character, but his design is REALLY all over the place. I believe Old Taric was a more put together character while Current Taric has too many loose ends. Current Taric was Demacia and features “Demacian blue”, but is no longer sided with Demacia. He is the Aspect of the Protector, yet unlike the other 4 aspects we have as champions, his title is “The Shield of Valoran. He is the Aspect of the Protector, yet his heal and shield are often leveled up later in favor of his offensive stun “laser”. His whole thing is supposed to be protection, but his lines constantly reference gems, stars, and his climb up Mount Targon. He has so many facets to his character (pun intended) that the current Taric doesn’t feel as well-put together. So maybe you can shed some (star)light on this gem of a champion: “What’s the Deal with Taric?”

From my point of view, the gold sharing lines tells me that he is not interested in killing for the gold, that he is only in it for the sake of crossing a name off his list. So he gives this 'useless to him' sack of gold to whoever helped him achieve this goal. What I'm a bit more upset about is that his lore doesn't mention him getting help. Like his gameplay role (An assassin who relies on the help of others) isn't portrayed well in his story where he is clearly doing all the killing himself. I would have liked a dynamic where let's say, Pyke employs (Read: Threatens) a crew member to help kill their captain and then tossing them the bounty. This conveys his 'hunting together' nature, which I absolutely love and only wished it came across better in the lore. And as he clearly hates how captains treat their crew from the voicelines and his general state of being, I think there's a possibility Pyke might have some degree of sympathy for crew members like his past self and also believe he is doing the right thing by ridding this man of his scum of a boss. Of course this contradicts the part where he starts killing other crew members than just captains, but hey, maybe this short story would then end with him asking the crew member for his name after the deed is done and going "Wait, that name sounds... familiar.". But what do you think about this 'missing' aspect?

i think they decided to voice and design him more "accessible" for the Players. not too many People have such an interest in the lore, and if they dont know about that it would have been too difficult for them to even understand this wierd character in game. the Bountyhunter is an easier theme to grasp for the most of the playerbase i guess

Well he is literally working with a "Captain" in The Ruined King game so I think the in game Pyke is after the short story before The Ruined King kinda scenario and riot should clarify him working with Miss Fortune obviously and we should get a backstory on how he got calmer. And honestly I would like to think it is character development more lol

I agree with your analysis of Pyke, both variations are interesting in their own way. I would assume the gameplay version was created first then the artists and writers came after. This kind of thing happens often in my workplace, I create something for a purpose, even do a write up, but others don't read it and then go and do their own thing. Very frustrating sometimes, because I work hard to design what I create, and I shouldn't have to redo it all just because the artists or someone didn't listen properly. Even though what they came up with is often cool in its own way, its hard to say whats better, so I tend to settle on increasing the commonalities so its not immediately obvious that there was conflicting ideas going on. Though I then I worry that when people that take closer looks at things, such as in this video, they will definitely notice.

Could it be that when he was reformed as a specter, that he was reformed as the man that he was before he was eaten as a reminder of what he lost? That would make sense for why he is so clean and has nice clothes

You know what would be kind of funny? If the reason Pyke acts they way he does in game is because he's under the influence of something in Summoner's Rift that stabilizes his mind but when he's not on there he's full Jack the Ripper "You look Familiar" ghostly killer.

i dont think he's supposed to look like a "zombie thats can barely keep himself together" or howver you describe him..it's hard for a monster shark thats like at least 5x bigger than any regular sharks we have here on earth to rip an average human apart...like it says in his backstory he was crushed and drowned...crushed due to the water pressure from being in the depths of the depths and..well drowned due to being underwater. I do wish he looked a bit more "dead" though

Perhaps pyke isn't deranged per say but actually has dissociative personality disorder which explains the inconsistencies in the short story that's the original and his hatred and hidden kill lust manifested itself and the original has alterior motives then the persona in game and the persona he probably sees himself with the in game model's appearance and the teaser pic is the actual appearance. Just a thought

I hope we get to see more of the lore Pyke in Ruined King, I prefer the "revenant with amnesia" version of him over the "Ghost Rider for hire" one

Been waiting for this vid for a while, i really lover your character design and lore analyzation videos. I dont even play league of legends (though I plan to), but your videos really wanna make me wanna play the game, keep up the great work on your videos.

When it comes to bilgerwater Riot like to do Edrict horrors at the bottom of the ocean, but it also talked about how the sappite sacs in the beast mouth where used for magic, maybe being around so much gave him his power, but also made his go insane so thats why anyone he comes across his mid warps what happened to fit them into it.

I've seen someone else voice this opinion and it happens to coincide with my own. What if the lore Pyke is how he was when he first started but after however long past he met the "voice" in some way which cleared his mind. This would create the Pyke we seen in game who is most likely what he was like before death.

It's very weird how different the two versions of Pyke are between in game and on paper. Which sucks so bad because I'm pretty sure that he is filled with hints toward the true nature of Nagakabouros. The Bearded Lady respects the desires of ALL creatures, including the sea monsters hunted by Bilgewater residents. We are seeing Pyke act as an agent of life through death. Respecting true balance by extracting the cost from those who have benefited from the endless slaughter of leviathans and off the poverty of their lessers. Just my opinion, but as always I love your character analysis!

Maybe the fact he acts like hes a normal cutthroat, as he once was, reflects that he still sees himself a normal sane person. Anyways I would like you to visit Jinx and Vi in a video if you havent. I'd like to know how their personality/designs have held up

You could explain it by saying that he first started out like in the short story, killing his crew mates but after the final name was scratched off more names started showing up and at first he was tricked by the false memories but eventually after more and more names are put on the list he figured it out and accepted his new role, which is where we see the more in game version

I feel like RIOT are really screwing up their recent champ designs when pit against what they COULD have been, especially in comparison to their lore

I think, while the character model in game and *some* of the voicelines don't quite reflect the "lore-pyke", the overall personality and a few voicelines (especially the ones about sharing gold) are actually totally compatible with lore-pyke and even add nuance to his character. He is not just a madman that kills everything he sees because the eldritch entity that saved him is messing with his mind. He is a sardonic, calculating killer who wants revenge, in the concrete, from the ones who let him die, but deeply and maybe unknowingly, from everyone who tyrannically exploit the work of and starve their men (i.e. the most ruthless captains), as was done to him. He thinks he is taking revenge for himself, but the entity that saved him muddles his mind (if it just wants for him to kill or it has some deeper motive, we do not know), and so, without being fully conscious of it, he is actually taking revenge for every suffering fisherman in bilgewater, fulfilling his deeper ideal in a ghostly, exquisitely fucked-up way.

there is one way to have to have both pykes as one person its a bit weird but think about it this way what if the lore pyke is how e started out and then after some time his mind clears up maybe by finding his drowned city in the prosses then we get game pyke I don't think that's what's happening but hopefully that may become the case down the line.

Alright, it's 2:40 AM on a school day and I need to shower but I'm still gonna write this because I have a whole lot of thoughts regarding Pyke. My problem with your primary criticism in this video is that you feel like Pyke is two different characters under the same name, but I don't actually feel like the versions of him we see are in any way exclusive. While writing a character as the antagonist of an ocean-themed ghost story is fine and good, that doesn't actually make much a person. While Pyke has a premise he also needs to be a person because we're gonna be hearing his thoughts constantly as we play him, and I think the person we hear in his voicelines reflect, partly, who he was before he became this revenant. Related to that, I think it's interesting to point out that basically all of Pyke's more coherent, less bloodthirsty voicelines play when he's out of combat, which could be read as him actually having moments of clarity, despite his incoherent memories. In that sense, he wouldn't be unlike Sion, another undead character who reflects on his own pitiable state when not fueled by his bloodlust. Regarding his appearance, I do think it's fair to assume that Pyke is more spectral than he is physical. There's a scene in Then, Teeth where he's described as "falling apart into salt and drops of water", and one of his abilities has him disappear into the "spectral waters". As such, I'd say the version of Pyke we see in-game is what he was like BEFORE he died. It could also be the case that Pyke's model is the way he sees himself, while the first promotional art is how he's seen by his victims as he comes skulking out of the darkness in the middle of the night. Differing appearances makes sense if we already know he's an unreliable narrator. That's my takeaway, anyway. I'm making a lot of assumptions in my reading, of course, but I'd personally say that's something you're guilty of doing in this video as well. As a final note I'd like to say that I am way more fond of Pyke as an "agent of the depths" than I am of Pyke as just a "ghost story antagonist" because I do just absolutely love the almost Lovecraftian deep-sea horror stuff they've got going on with Pyke and his voicelines, with all the ominous hints towards what lies in the depths and what it did to him. On the topic of sea-themed stuff, do you have any thoughts and opinions on Splatoon? If you do, maybe consider doing a video on it? It's a subject where I'd love to hear what you have to say.

I'm glad that you were able to point this out, I felt this kind of difference as well. Even his in-game short bio is different from the story's and audio drama's "Pyke". It almost paints him as this kind of vigilante killing the exploitative wealthy upper class of Bilgewater, but the lore says he's also taking revenge on the people he assumes cut his line or watched him drown. Maybe there was confusion as to whether Pyke should be more of a villainous, manic character or a kind of vigilante during development?

I'm pretty sure pyke is like the revenge of the seas around bilgewater. It fits with nautilus' new lore too and fizz's too.

I play Dungeons and Dragons and Pyke gives me the vibe of of a warlock, a hex blade warlock in particular, but regardless it seems to me that he made a deal in those depths. My theory is that this deal was his life to be the oceans hitman. The ocean brought him back and now he excites it’s ever growing hit list.

My idea (I main Pyke, he so fun) The deep sea monsters that have been fished out of the ocean want revenge. He was the fishermen, the huntsmen of fish. Fish don't die in the water, you have to bring them up on the deck of your ship then club them. The memory of the eyes and ship are from the monsters they killed. If you were hunted my a thing with no name, TERROR sounds like a name the fish have for the fishing boat. They are using him to take revenge, his mission. Memories are how they tell him who to hunt. That Noxuian captain didn't have to be from bilgewater to hunt sea monsters. The list is a second way to talk to him and keep him on the right path. the LUDONARRATIVE DISSONANCE could be split personally disorder or my prefered idea the short story is a earlier pyke fresh from his death and the one we play is pyke two or three years into hunting his fellow man and has put his mind back together. His ult pulls money out of his ass, who is to say the sea monsters didn't pay for his services.

Bruhhhhh, trippy. I want to play him to get the missions complete :/ but I don't wanna pay if I'm not good in the long run. On that part where he's put together well in game. HOW awesome would it be if that's just how he looked from the players prospective(the person playing as him)? And to everyone else he looks decrepit, torn apart, beastly? Since in his mind he feels a driving force and that all his killings are just. What if that also affects the way he views himself? I feel like this concept would be amazing to use on another character that has a lore better represented of that concept:0 just a thought that popped into my head during that part. Thanks for these. I think that there will be 1 more story released that connects the two, that the in-game Pyke is not entirely a different character, but is perhaps Pyke after he realizes that his list is magically expanding itself and that he’s being manipulated, so he dives back into the water to find the source of what it was that revived him, and then they have to bribe him into continuing the list.

What if the Being that turned pyke into who is now, also are the being who merged Nautilos diving 🤿 kit with his own flesh and became the feared beast under the sea?

What are thr chances of him being the bilgewater kalista? There might be new names on the list because more people get betrayed in the sea so those who drowned in similar to the terror ship situations have thier memories transfered to pyke as thr one to take revenge for them.

I always thought of some things about Pyke (like his voice lines about sharing gold) coming from his past as a fisherman and member of a crew, where everyone shared the gold for their catch But yeah, there's definitely some conflicting between the Lore and Game interpretations of Pyke

I feel the same thing with Pyke. When they released the teaser it was like a Slasher movie with pirates. It was so cool, the art, the story, fuck, it was genius! But later I saw the in-game model and I was extremely disappointed. I was expecting a pirate version of Jason, killing everyone for revenge. The in-game model doesn't scream ghost scary killer it says "I'm have drowned and now I have powers and I kill people".

I would like to state a little thing: Pykes ship and the story of his death is defenitly true because in his first Legends of Runeterra card the flavor text states the following(Riot themselves said that LOR was cannon): „…the visions are back again. I see his desperate eyes looking up at me whilst the jaul-fish closed his maw around him. We tried pulling but the ship was too small, and the beast to big. I had no choice. I had to cut his line. I had to“ - Blood soaked letter This implies 2 thinks, firstly that Pyke probably already took the life of his „murderer“ and that his memorys are indeed, to an extent, correct. The interesting thing about this is that the Letter would imply that Pyke has killed at least a few people before he got to the person that cut his line. Furthermore, the flavor text of his leveled up form basically says that, Pyke is coming for everyone due to his newfound lust for murder and that his manifest only illustrates what he has become. In the flavor text of the jaul-fish (which was the monster that killed pyke), the flavor text reads the following as well: „Aint nothing like a jaul-fish to show you who you can trust and who you can kill“ which implies that he is, at least to some degree under the control of the jaul-fish. This is particularly interesting when combined with one of Swains Quotes where he says: „They fight the mist above the seas, never looking beneath“ which could have some interesting lore implications combined with all of this context.

I think the dissonance, at least between the written lore and the gameplay video/audio, is that the lore basically details Pyke's origins and early time after his transformation/resurrection while the gameplay shows us who Pyke is after a much longer while of doing this, after he's had more time to pull himself together and realize a few things, such as how his list seems to operate.

Edit: @TBSkyen I always interpreted it as he is remembering his roots as a bounty hunter/fisherman. And his bounty sharing like the opposite of what happened to him. That there should be trust between crewmates. A popular theme with of course is remembering their past. They could easily produce another story and the voice lines would make sense. What do you think?

This MIGHT be a bit of a stretch but maybe the Pyke we see in Lore is what Pyke used to be and this is Pyke as is he now. Cause there's only so many times you can strike a name from a list and only so long a list can BE before you notice something is up, something else is pulling the strings. It seems he's at peace with it tho, like his in character stuff implies he's good with fish's murder list but still enjoys being part of a team like his days of being a crewman. Like the lore is his origin story but that story has continued. Like maybe the reason the ships name wasn't on the manifest is cause the Terror sailed so long ago that everyone onnit is long dead. We aren't told how long Pyke was in the belly of the fish. I imagine there WAS this big moment when he realized he was just fulfilling a list for fish and he's okay with that cause its better than he was treated as a person. He's become feared in Bilgewater, captain's are scared to throw their weight around and act better cause Pyke exists. So maybe he views himself as a necessary evil but he's still a person. Or well as much of a person you can be as a revenant

The shared gold aspect in pykes gameplay makes sense for me. He didn’t think it was fair that the captains got most of the riches when he was alive and I like that he is consistent with that idea even when he is dead. But as for lots of his other design elements I completely agree pyke does feel sort of like 2 different characters mashed together.

I have 4 theories. One: Pyke starts as the first version, the insane one who's barely coherent - and the 2nd one who talks about the evil fish telling him to kill is Pyke, but a few decades later. Two: Vice versa - Pyke starts out coherent, and then devolves into the revenant over decades of this. Three: Pyke v1 was Pyke v2's predecessor. The fish decided to animate a nutcase, and he wasnt coherent enough to be useful enough. He can't investigate. Hes a good bloodhound, sure, but he's not able to hunt on his own. Once he rotted completely, they got another one and kept him a little more awake. Four: Vice versa - the things in the ocean puppeted a guy, but were bothered by his coherence. He was _conscious,_ which means he's not _completely_ obedient. So they got a new one, one that was less person and more attack dog.

I have spent past five hours playing him I am addicted to him. Literally. He is so fun to play

The deal with no one remembering the ship and the false memories makes me wonder if he was dead for a long time. He reawakened after a few centuries and came to bilgewater long after the ship and crew were dead and forgotten.

Could just be that his story isn't over yet.

Pyke's theme is fucking amazing

That's why I think Project Pyke portrays the whole "broken mind" thing better. His voicelines have him constantly shouting nonsense and even himself getting confused and not trustung his own mind (Since you know, his mind is at pieces). Tho I wished they did more with the skin, have him have paint scratches and broken pieces of metal welded and pieced together, making him look more scrapped up since Projecy esentially thore him apart.
