Hey Guys It’s Joel!
Firstly, it was great to finally meet Nes from Zimba Motoring! We wanted to put our cars up against each other to find out exactly what the difference is between the E89 BMW Z4 and the E85 BMW Z4. Thanks to Christian for joining us with his 3.0 Litre E89 Z4 and a special thank you to Dylan for helping with the filming and taking the awesome thumbnail photo!

Zimba Motoring 6 weeks. Identical to yours apart from dark grey with red leather. Wasn’t sure about the leather first but the colour combo works really well. Thought about getting a Racechip but warranty etc puts me off.

I have only owned it 2 weeks soo far, I love how responsive the steering and throttle is! It has been in the garage this week for a sensor to be replaced and the heat shield was rattling. I need to source a used or refurbished roof pump as they want over £1k for a new one (my roof doesnt work :/)

Hi Joel do the axel oils need changing periodically on z4s or are they a sealed unit so to speak any advice would be good great vid by the way 👍 best wishes ,Andy

Your checklist for the future: -Black cooling intakes !!! -Bilstein lowering Suspension -Black 18 i rims -6 Speed M gearchanger leather (that thing you put your hand on) on ebay for 60 bucks -Alcantara at your steering wheel. I can give you a pic of mine if you give me a adress where to send them.

Good suggestions apart from the 18 inch wheels. The Z4 gen1 is known to be firmly setup to begin with.

I just sold my 2007 2.5i e85, replaced it with a 2011 23i e89 Highline Edition. The e89 looks better, handles better on 19" rft (I switched the rft for standard tyres on the e85, the handling was still twitchy) and the interior is a huge improvement. No contest!

Great vid Joel. Would have been nice to see the e89 30i comparison. You said you have ditched the runflats and I’m considering doing the same. What have you got in case of a puncture? Can of tyre weld?

Paul D hey Paul, thanks! I couldn’t include it in this video otherwise it would have been way too long! Haha, maybe in another one ... yes I have, improves the ride and handling considerably. I don’t actually have anything which is a bit silly 😂 but luckily I haven’t had any punctures!

Hey Joel, bought an ‘04 3.0 Z yesterday (over the pond) and yours is the first channel I subscribed to! I’m loving the car but the first thing I’ve noticed coming from the e46 is there’s a much smaller aftermarket community. Not that the car needs much in terms of styling. However, you mentioned you had a head unit that worked with bluetooth, aux, etc? What do you have in yours and do you think it disrupts the interior much ? I really really like the dash on my car as is, and don’t want to throw some car toys bs on a bracket in the middle of it. Any input from you or the Z4 community is much appreciated 👍🏽👍🏽

Riley Sperbeck hey Riley! Awesome, thank you so much! The Z4 forum is definitely a good one to look at if you haven’t already! My head unit was in the car when I bought it, and it’s great, but it does slightly ruin the aesthetic of the dash for me, but not enough to outweigh the benefit. I know that a lot of E85 Z4s use the Parrot system which just clips on out of the way so that might be better? Hope this helps? Thanks for your support!

How does it compare to an E46 vert?

NGizzle much sportier/more fun to drive. Less comfortable/practical. The driving position is the biggest difference obv, nice and low right above the rear wheels. Throttle response on the same 3.0L seems more responsive likely due to it being lighter. Yet the handling seems about the same, if anything it’s slightly less responsive & the suspension is much much rougher. Sometimes your fighting the roads a bit, but then you give it more gas and roar ahead with a smile on your face. Imo it’s got all the right ingredients for a sporty car

Could you tell which one is larger to fit in? I am 1.95(6ft5) and not very comfortable in e85, hopefully e89 is larger.

I love the E89 more aesthetically, its more developed but I wonder if it will be as reliable as an E85. Amazing video, though.

You should try a Z3. Z4 E85 feels much bigger inside and roof is a huge improvement. Z3 M44 is huge fun to drive though.

I still prefer the E85 it's a real looker and feels much more like a "sports" car like a boxster. E89 is nice but too similar to the new TT or slk, they definitely lost some of the character that made the E85 such a beautiful car.

The E89 2.0 does not have 2 turbos but twin-scroll turbo technology.

JP Info the Porsche drivers loads better. It’s a proper sports car ready for the track. The z4 just feels like it’s for road use if you know what I mean

BMW Z4 E89 looks way better, not only because I prefer Hard Top Convertibles than Soft Top, but must be way way expenssive... So If I could get a BMW Z4 E85 Hard Top would be amazing!

Automatic is great, but if you're looking to keep the car for a while the repair costs on them are horrific and changes the economics of ownership substantially. The 6 cylinders have a reputation of being bulletproof - the autoboxes, not so much.

Yours doesn't look dated until you put the E89 next to it imo. It's a shame they didn't incorporate the bonnet into the grill as it looks kind of funny with that bonnet line across the front. Would make the bonnet way too big & heavy I guess

I wanted an e89 28i but now I'm not sure. The e89 30i probably sounds a lot better. I would love to own a e85 coupe though. It seems to be a way better driver's car.

Alex Dc depending on your budget, the absolute best drivers Z4 would be the Z4M. BMW took the engine from an E46 M3, ditched the electronic steering for good old school hydraulic steering, got rid of run flats for conventional tyres, and of course, it’s naturally aspirated. They’re going up in value too as they’re quite rare. A 3.0si coupe would be second to that too. But yeah - 30is are coming down to a good price point now 👍🏻

It's Joel the M is too expensive and the engine doesn't seem to be as reliable. I'm sure it's incredible but I don't want to deal with these issues.

It's Joel great video btw. What I liked about the idea of the e89 with the i4 turbo is that the engine is not sticking out in front of the wheels as much as the i6 does. I like the security of a hard top when you park it in the city. The i6 doesn't seem to stick out in the e85 like it does in the e89. Weird. Looks like they went a few steps backwards with the layout and performance.
