Spanglish is a hybrid language for a group of people with a mixed identity, who feel that they're neither from here nor there.
But how does it work? What types of Spanglish exist? Is there a wrong way to speak it? And what do I really think of Spanglish?
We'll look into all this and more in today's video.
I'd love to know if you guys partake in any type of Spanglish and what your thoughts and opinions are on the subject.
Let me know in the comments!
xo,
Holly

When I was in high school, I studied Spanish as a foreign language. Since my country Bulgaria is positioned in Europe, we were taught Spanish the way they speak it in Spain. At the time, though, Latin American soap operas, or telenovelas, were flooding the market. I watched them out of curiosity and to expand my vocabulary. And I must admit I was frustrated at some of the words they used. I’m not talking about idioms or expressions here. To illustrate this with an example, instead of going with “un coche” for car, they said “un caro”. Of course, that’s a regional thing. I assumed the closer a country was situated to the States, the more likely it was to use loan words. And that was okay, I didn’t mind. But years have gone by and today it pains me to see us, Bulgarians, tend to borrow more and more words from English. I get it. English is straightforward. A few words can say so much. However, it’s really sad that we are starting to forget our own mother tongue because we’re lazy or because we want to sound smart.

I'm black (trying to learn Spanish) and my former co workers (who were fluent in Spanish and English) would talk to me in Spanish or Spanglish. Sometimes I knew what they were saying, and reply back in English or Spanglish, because I did not the Spanish. response. For example if they asked: "Tiene 50 centavos?" (do you have 50 cents?). And I would reply with "No, lo siento. I only have my debit card. No tengo cash on me" (No, I'm sorry, I only have my debit card. I don't have any cash on me.)

Hi Holly, as I said Spanish version of the video I consider myself as a purist regarding languages, but your point of view it’s making me change my mind, As you say this is a phenomenon that results from a mixture between two cultures and that’s not the first time this happens , a good example of this culture shock is the Mexican society which in its base form arose from indigenous and Spanish elements. By the way as we say in Mexico “se te salió un gallo” at the beginning of this video 😂😂😂 greetings from Cuernavaca my favorite KZfaqr

no se si es porque vi el otro vídeo en español primero, pero me gusta ver como cada vez me cuesta menos entender todo en ingles y poder pensar las respuestas de forma que tengan sentido. Lo que peor llevo es lo de juntar ambos a la vez. Me falta fluidez cerebral para hablar spanglish, sin confundirme de palabras o el orden de las mismas. Gracias por la ayuda que supone tener una profesora a cientos de kilómetros y la alegría que transmites con tus vídeos. Nice job and i hope to see you soon in another video. Pienso que North Carolina se puede traducir y decir Carolina del Norte cuando se habla con hispanohablantes; al igual que New York (Nueva York), New Jersey (Nueva Jersey). Cuando yo le digo a mis amigos hispanos de Iberoamérica y España que vivo en New York (con la pronunciación en inglés) me quedan observando raro. Entonces, prefiero decirles que vivo en Nueva York (pronunciado en español) para que no piensen que estoy presumiendo de saber inglés.

You almost see this in all cultures involving two languages being spoken in one area over a long period of time. I can relate being Dutch-Indonesian. Brief history lesson: Indonesia was colonized by the Dutch for nearly 400 years. As a result, a mixed-race group of people arose in society and developed their own "creole" language called Petjoh; a mixture of Dutch and Indonesian (mostly Dutch vocab w/Indonesian sentence structure/syntax and grammar). Anywho - this language is dying out but my family still speaks this way, even though we can speak fluent Dutch and fluent Indonesian respectively. The way you explained Spanglish and how it came to be was eerily similar to Petjoh. It's cool to see that when two cultures "clash" for long enough, the later generations will find ways to incorporate the two together :)

Holly, a very good video for English speakers learning spanish would be the use of the To Be verb. I think that even perfect speakers struggle with the difference between ser and estar. Actually for some that have little accent you can tell they are forigners because of their use of Ser and Estar. Is not an easy one however. Ser would be in most cases a permannet condition or one that cannot be changed easily/in the short term, while estar is more like to be present at but also a situation that is not permannet or can be/is expected to change. Mind twister.

Here in Spain, at least among young people, Spanglish is something cool. I mean, if you can't think of a word and then you say it in English, you look very modern and intelligent, somehow. Eg: Some people pretend they don't remember the word in their mother tongue so the other people think: oh, wow, you speak English even better than Spanish! 😂 Ridiculous in my opinion. It happens to me because I have a terrible memory, no need to pretend 😆

In Charlottesville VA we have a road named Rio Road. The name come from it being formerly Route 10 or R10 and didn't originate from the Spanish word. I knew a Spanish speaker who said he thought it was pronouced "Ree-oh" when he first moved to the area but no one would know what you meant if you said that because it is actually "Rye-oh" Road.

¡Hola! I was hooked by the title and when I watched the video, I was surprised! I am a Filipino and as a millenial, I often speak "Taglish"- a mixture of Tagalog (Philippines' national language) and English, in addition, since tagalog has lots of spanish loanwords, you could hear someone say "pero siempre más delicious if it's eaten hot", "can I borrow your lapiz?" and etc.

I love por siempre XD

To park, as I know in spanish we can use three words: aparcar, estacionar, and parquear. Use RAE- Real Academia de la Lengua Española. It is the official entity that rule Spanish language.

I actually love pronouncing English words as the native Spanish speakers do. I also found the people don't always understand me if I don't. In English, people look at me like I'm showing off a bit if I say tortilla they way it's supposed to be pronounced (in Spanish of course). I just go with what will be understood.

HOLLY!!!! I can't find the video on your channel again, so I'll leave this comment here. A few weeks ago I was watching one of your videos and you were talking about the linguistics behind some English or Spanish words, and I realized that even though I sometimes struggle in my Spanish classes it's really the only subject I enjoy studying. So now I've decided to try to change my major from a BA in interdisciplinary studies with 7-12th social studies teacher certification to a BA in Spanish with ec-12th teacher certification and a minor in Spanish translating. I applied to UT Rio Grande Valley and I'm waiting to hear back from them!!! Hopefully, I'll get my answer sometime next week!!!

I think I watched the Spanish version not long ago. As for pronouncing geographic names in the original language I think I like that idea. As you know there are many Spanish named towns in Texas and when I hear English pronunciations it sounds weird to me and I do not like it. Also there is a river that is pronounced very badly in English. I refer to the Brazos river. The full name of the river is "El rio de los brazos de Dios" which is a beautiful Spanish name. One of the weirdest English pronunciations is of the town named Mexia I have always been mystified by how it is pronounced in English. I think most people pronounce it something like MuhHAYuh. My dad always pronounced it MuhHAIR and I could never figure out how he came up with that pronunciation. I would say MayHEEah. I am not at all fond of Spanglish.

I hardly ever speak Spanglish. I try my hardest to speak one language at a time. I live in California (San Francisco Bay Area) and all of my friends here speak English. I don’t have any Spanish speaking friends which sucks. Since I don’t speak Spanish often, it’s a very nice treat to able to speak in my mother tongue so I avoid mixing English with it. Besides English is so BORING to speak sometimes, it’s very monotone. I do notice that younger trending Spanish speaking KZfaqrs throw in some English words into their videos which is a bit odd however I get that it’s “cool” and the internet has changed everything. To me Spanish has more flavor and it’s a livelier language. I feel more passionate and inspired while speaking Spanish. I miss speaking Spanish so much that I look at your videos (and others) to get a sense of friendship with a Spanish speaking person. Plus it inspires me to move to Mexico and get in touch with my culture. Like you said, it’s a feeling of neither being from here nor there. I guess if nothing else, we should consider ourselves lucky that we’re able to interchangeably change languages at a flip of switch!
