Owl has become one of my favourite studios in the last 2 or 3 years. This came about primarily as a result of Pathfinder: Wrath of The Righteous. Now I ask the question what should Owlcat work on next? Pathfinder, Warhammer 40K, D&D or something else entirely?

Rogue Trader is actually their best selling game for this place in the cycle. They hit 500k sales by the beginning of February, iirc. I love Rogue Trader, even if you do need a spreadsheet with pivot tables to understand a character build. Gotta love all the “+1.3% to damage, stacks per attack on days where your character is wearing polka dot boxers, stacks double if your character ate ham for lunch but stacks only 1.5 if it was honey ham instead of black Forrest ham, something something +PythagoreanTheorem to critical hit chance” abilities. I’m all in for whatever they do next. Yeah, their have their quirks. They are a little overambitious in scope. They use their first few months of a release as an early release. They always have to add minigames. There’s always a power fantasy. But you can tell their games are made with a ton of passion/care, and you can tell they know what they want their games and their style to be. If you’d played Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous and then spent a few hours with Rogue Trader, you’d know they made it even if the game didn’t say it. I’m sure their next will be Rogue Trader DLC for a while. In! (And for anyone who hasn’t played it, give it a shot, the companions and world building really grows on you, as does the humor; the aftermath of sexytime with Jae is the funniest/most absurd romance thing I’ve ever seen in a game, by an order of magnitude)

I don't mind it: Once the game is polished and offers good story and mechanics, Owlcat will have my support. Also... I think you might have missed just how much WOTC rubbed Owlcat the wrong way during the whole DnD licensing fiasco that happened recently. Owlcat evenn publicly denounced the move.

Some advice from someone who loves paradox grand strategy games. EU5 is currently in development and looks amazing having learnt the lesson of what im about to say. But when EU4 was released people considered it EU3.5 and over the course of 10 years and DLC it become EU4 and now its arguably EU4.5 in scope. I say this because when CK2 went to CK3 it has been a bit rocky and when Vic2 went to Vic3 it has a lot of issues. Issues in the games not feeling complete, feeling like its only the .5 of a sequel that lacks in depth gameplay/systems that feel like a sequel and feel like a sequel in that it will be compared to the previous game with the inherent bias that the DLCs will be included. I say this because if Owlcat do a sequel to Pathfinder, it may feel this way if the release game doesnt have enough indepth content. If the game feels lack luster it will hamper its development to grow its new player base away from the old game. Its a concern I havent heard many people talk about in this space and one to take note of

While this video is based around an entirely wrong premise. I do agree Pathfinder would be good as the next game. I would vote for Thassalonia or Cheliax. However as I said - Rogue Trader had a massive launch with a lot of 40k Channels inviting people into it. Reaching the highest sales and showing Owlcat to 40k community which is the largest consolidated fanbase now. Pathfinder is sadly more of a 1% thing these days. Warhammer 40k is the new majority like Star Wars or Dune. Also - As much as I like Pathfinder for its combat and setting as fantasy. I find that Rogue Trader is a major improvement on the story side of things (and its only just begun its DLC cycle). Owlcat Games get better with time by a huge margin. If Wrath stayed at its launch variant, it would honestly not be a good game without Extended Edition reworks of mythic paths and additional content. What we also call the Baldurs Gate 3 effect is not real. Baldur is not a good CRPG, it will not invite people into D&D or Pathfinder by proxy. People play BG 3 because its "sort of Mass Effect in fantasy". Its popularity is purely based around the characters, voice acting but the story, setting and all around it is very.. mid. Skulls coming out in 2 days meaning all the Warhammer community will be up in arms and will get new stuff for Rogue Trader at the Games Workshop event.
@spellandshield
@spellandshield Ай бұрын
You're probably right. I don't watch much 40K stuff so I am probably biased (I did state that in the video). IF Owlcat DID sell much more 40K then Pathfinder is doomed, sadly. I agree with your take on BG3. People don't like it because it is a CRPG, in fact I have made entire videos about this, rather they like it because it has pretty cinematics and big budget.
@michastanisawski9093
@michastanisawski9093 Ай бұрын
@@spellandshield I'll just give a little tid bit on that - Rogue Trader sold over 500k copies in its first month since launch. WOTR sold 250k in its first month. Both games suffered heavily from refunds but overall due to the budget they made good cash. WOTR is definitely the more expensive game to produce out of the two. If we take that trend, Rogue Trader will reach around 2 milion copies when DLC comes rolling out and some rougher aspects are updated. Wrath got up to 1 milion copies once the DLC rolled and the Extended Edition legitimately saved the game. Rogue Trader however is definitely a bigger cash cow due to the fact it's around 40% the game that Wrath is at the moment content wise. Less voiced dialogue needed, less animations, less models, less maps, less mechanics - even something like Crusade Management is a huge cost compared to Ship Mechanics for Rogue Trader. I think if they want to keep on going with Pathfinder, Owlcat will need to finally learn to cut the bad stuff out of their games. I love the games to death, mind you. But Crusade Management was an absolute miss on every level in WOTR. Mythic Paths except the 3-4 (Lich, Angel, Azata, Demon) are also so undercooked that their addition feels just pointless even with Swarm rework. Owlcat should have listened to the community earlier when they said they should fix the main game of Wrath completely with DLC content. Now it feels very messy even though I think Last Sakorians, Lord of Nothing and Treasure of the Midnight Isles is alright. I'd just prefer to have better mythic paths than Through the Ashes or Inevitable Excess.
@spellandshield
@spellandshield Ай бұрын
@@michastanisawski9093 Yeah, I am only now getting around to Through the Ashes and Lord of Nothing...I also don't like Owlcat's minigames at all. I wish they would just focus on the main game but oh well, they probably will be focusing on Rogue Trader and 40K for the foreseeable future. Sad.

@michastanisawski9093 Ай бұрын
@@spellandshield No reason to be sad, at least we got a massive CRPG to keep the old fans of D&D games alive. Really the only thing to be sad about is that ultimately, Baldurs Gate 3 beyond being a very profitable game did actually mostly kill or damage severly the CRPG genre. Now, every game will have to focus on really bland "modern" storytelling, companion romances and expensive cutscenes. I recommend you try out Rogue Trader, even if you dislike 40k as it actually really respects the setting.

@@michastanisawski9093 I don't think BG3 ruined the CRPG genre; the genre was never really in competition with the BG3 or Mass Effect. I'd like very much to see more Pathfinder games, but with Second Edition rules. 2e is much more combat heavy and streamlined than 1e/D&D3.5 even to a point of being "too gamey" on the table (think of 4e, but done right). I just hope they pick up an original Adventure Path of Owlcat's creation like they did in Rogue Trader because PF2e Adventure Paths simply don't hit as good as 1e ones. Age of Ashes is extremely boring with unremarkable NPCs that don't add up to the story, and all other are too Specifically Thematic like Exctintion Curse on Circus and Strenght of Thousands on the Magic School.

There are a few layers on this one for me. Mechanically, I think Owlcat does bad job at balancing. And the more things they invent on their own, the less balanced the game becomes. 3.5ed always had balancing issues that are further increased by Pathfinder ruleset (power creep) and by the enormous experience people have with 3.5 (often 20+ years). Owlcat did somewhat passable job in Kingmaker but I think it's due to minimal input of their own balancing. But with mythical paths and their own spin on balance it's a mess. I seriously think that around 10-13 level in WotR they should change the dice used from D20 to D100 without any other numerical changes, if they wanted to have any semblance of balance. This is somewhat confirmed when they tried to put their own spin on Rogue Trader - they put so many multiplier bonuses in there that it's practically impossible to balance as well - you either have the correct build that scales to god power-level or you get annihilated by enemies who scale up to almost god-like power-level. In WotC they don't have multiplier but they also have a tendency for balancing that makes the dice throw irrelevant - you either always hit with a correct build, except a 1 roll, or you always miss with incorrect build, except for a nat 20. And in Owlcat's Pathfinder games there is a very thin, practically unachievable margin, where a D20 roll matters outside 1 or 20 roll. Mechanically, I'd like Owlcat to go with a new system that has balancing somewhat well done and I think Pathfinder 2ed would be perfect for that. Just don't allow Owlcat to make any changes to systems. This way we don't need super mythical and heroic adventures with new, unbalanced mechanics and we could restart with normal mechanics without being bored by something done dozens of times already. Lore-wise, I very much liked WH40k and I always wanted to play a game in this world with focus on roleplaying. I also think there is wealth of options in 40k universe for storytelling and I'd love to visit this universe again. At the same time, I strongly dislike Pathfinder/Starfinder universe. Creators wanted to put too much in there and it resembles a gray goo at this point. I think Owlcat did great job at extracting what is interesting in Pathfinder while ignoring the parts that make Pathfinder a gray goo but there is a limit to what can be done with this. I doubt it'd be possible to have 40k game with Pathfinder 2ed ruleset. I'd love to revisit 40k but I wouldn't trust Owlcat with balancing. And implementing 2ed ruleset in Warhammer may not be the best fit for 40k). So I think the best option would be to have Owlcat use Pathfinder 2ed rules, but set it in original universe of their own. But I wouldn't mind using some lesser known, generally unutilised setting - like Earthdown. (but I'd love to play another roleplaying-focused 40k game)

I absolutely love Rogue Trader and and am proud to see my name in the backers of it. As a 40k fan, I was incredibly excited to see its first true rpg from the makers of WOTR. The problem with Rogue Trader is its scope. The mechanics and world are great, but you don't have the mythic paths and incredible story choice and reactivity. In WOTR the story of a a demon is vastly different than the Angel mythic path for instance. Thats what was needed in Rogue Trader. Falling to Chaos should be vastly different than playing as defender of the Imperium. Im hoping that the dlc for Rogue Trader beefs up the story versatility, but no matter what, WOTR is simply a bigger, bolder game which is why it will be preferred to Rogue Trader.

I think the basic problem with Warhammer 40k is that it is a "war time" sci-fi, which, imho, just isn't going to draw in as wide an audience. Specifically, I suspect it doesn't play as well with female gamers. The Warhammer 40k settings is just a very male centric universe. Its a depressing world, dominated by masculine figures, who fight dirty because they don't have a choice. Whereas when you look at just who is streaming a game like BG3, you see a very diverse crowd. Anyone can imagine themselves (or some version of themselves that they would like to be) in the that game setting. Its gothic, or high fantasy, or low fantasy, or romantic, or... Whatever type of game setting you want. And that flexibility, to me, along with some great story telling, is what brought in the crowds. The accessibility and widespread familiarity with D&D5e certainly helped.

Simple answer from me: Don't care what's next. Just make a balanced-tested rpg. I like good game design. I will buy if good. I approach RPG like I do with fighting games: if it's broken and the system is broken I avoid it unless there is a good story. There are two types of players: 1. those who play for good gameplay mechanics. 2. those who play for immersion and for story. I tend to care about the former more. That is why I can play adventure games like Zelda Breath of the Wild and Zelda Tears of the Kingdom without caring about the characters or the story. In the old days stories were just put in games to give you an excuse to go into dungeons and kill monsters and the fun was planning how to get out of it alive and the power you felt obtaining loot and selling stuff to get more gold. (the journey is more important than the reward) But as time went on story became people's reasons to play games. (thus you started seeing features in Grand Theft Auto games starting with 5 where a player could skip the gameplay if it was too hard LOL)
