One of the areas of curiosity when it comes to Foster Parenting is... What's it like when the kids get dropped off?
How much notice do you have?
Who drops them off?
What do they come with?
Are they scared?
Are YOU scared?
New Foster Parents want to know...
What does the Social Worker tell you?
What paperwork will I have to fill out?
What am I required to do when they first arrive?
Today we try to answer these questions and give you a peek into the first 24 hrs of a Foster placement!

I was in foster care. The first 24 hours is so scary. 🥺 I was 11 when I went into foster care. I was sexually abused by one of the female girls in my first foster home I was made to share a room with. I was too scared to tell my foster mom because she was a stranger.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, that is so brave of you to write. And important for Foster parents to be aware of the potential bad situations they could be putting their foster children in. We always had very strict rules for safety and I tried my best to make our kids feel safe and loved so they would open up to me. Praying your heart is healed from that trauma and hoping you are in a better place in life today ❤️❤️❤️

How can I as a new foster mom make sure any children who come to my home will tell me if there is a problem? What would you suggest.

Can you even choose who to accept? What if you can't handle the trauma if you are simply not able to navigate? I am a bit shocked you are given just some random situation...

Yes you can always choose to say no given the information they tell you, if you feel like it's not a good situation for yourself, your family or the child. But, because these are often emergency situations the social workers are unaware of many of the details. Once a child is placed with you and you feel it's not a good fit You can do a " 10-day notice" where they will have to find alternative placement within 10 days.

I don’t understand why CPS doesn’t take the children with lice to the lice clinic first to get them removed! Oh my goodness
@TheWhites6

My guess, is because most removals are done at odd hours of the day/ night.

How do you have time to get childcare in place if you work?
@TheWhites6

Most states have FMLA that may cover time off for the placement of a foster child. You'd have to speak directly with HR of your company though. Also, not all placements are "emergency" meaning you don't have to be available to take them in immediately. Sometimes they are already in a different foster home that, for whatever reason, needs them to move or the child may be temporarily in a group home, children's shelter or even a relative that can only keep them short term. In those instances you would have time to coordinate with the social worker as to when they can get moved in and registered at school or daycare. I hope that helps 💗

RAD behaviors are problematic. ..can you discuss attention seeking behaviors ...that too is a nightmare...
@TheWhites6
@TheWhites6 Жыл бұрын
In our experience, the best course of action is to ignore attention seeking behaviors as much as possible while GIVING lots of positive attention at other times, especially when you notice the child doing kind, thoughtful or obedient things. It takes a tremendous amount of consistency but will eventually make a difference. Depending on the age, we have also, taken the time ( when not escalated) to talk to the child about how they see themselves, who they want to be and their worth regardless of behavior. I know that's a short response but I hope it helps.

@@TheWhites6 thank you for taking the time....I'm doing the ignoring thing...he just Amps up the behavior...for instance...if he is loud...he just gets louder...if refusing to eat...he starts wretching to vomit...he won't get off the toilet in the morning to get ready for school until I say something to him...even if 15 minutes or more passes... If I say hurry ...he slows down...when he gets what he likes to eat...I say eat slowly...he jams it in his mouth...I've nearly had it ..😞
