My first oil change for my new 2020 Ford Ranger! I may have screwed up a bit, but hopefully you can learn from me and know what to expect.

Former ford tech here. Beautiful truck. I have a 2019. DO NOT GO 10K MILES ON A OIL CHANGE. It is a Ecoboost engine (turbocharged). The oil gets very very dirty. I recommend 5 k. The turbo does not like 10k oil changes. I know Ford recommends it. But it's just a selling point "oh you can go 10k miles before a oil change. Less maintenance". It's a selling tactic. Same with "sealed transmissions". And you access the oil filter through driver wheel well. Don't need to take wheel off. Just turn it all the way to the right

You access the oil filter through the driver's side (front) wheel well (you do not need to remove the wheel). There is a flexible (I think rubber) guard that is held on with four fasteners. Pull the fasteners, fold the flap back and you have direct access to the oil filter. Looks like what you did worked well too. I think Ford recommends spraying out the catch tray with cleaner afterwards.

Thanks. Getting ready to do my first oil change on my 21 ranger xlt sport. I love this truck. I’m doing the first Chan get at 2000 miles then I’m going to change it every 4K or so. I know it says it can go 7500 but I need this truck to last 15 years. With the turbo I’ll be changing way more often

5w30 synthetic blend recommended in the manual. Full doesn’t hurt at all though.

Just gave my newly acquired 2020 ranger fx4 a change yesterday…took about an hour by the time I pulled the skid plate, drained, pulled rubber flap in wheel well an pulled filter and then filled and reassembled. Easy peasy…no issues. 6qts Mobil 1 full synthetic, K&N filter.

Have '19 Ranger XLT FX4 crew cab. 19mos / 16mis. Flawless so far . Truck drives wonderful an the 2.3L Ecoboost is a blast w/good MPGs. All the new midsize brand trucks are good but all new Ranger is by far best in class. Ranger takes 6.2qts w/new filter! It's easy to remove oil filter NO WHEEL TURNING NEEDED. SN+ full synthetic oil only.

Not a bad video. I'd invest in a oil catch can, I have a mishimoto oil catch on mine. The amount of fluid it accumulates is surprising. I have a 2019 with 3,400 miles, filled the can twice already.

Check out a fumoto valve. Installed one on both of my cars and zero mess (seriously) I drain it into an old laundry detergent bottle as a holder then the old oil into the 5qt jug after I empty it into the car.

Mine had the same rounded marks on the drain plug. Not sure why it looks like that.

I am not a fan of where the oil filter is placed on the ranger. I love my ranger i just wish they would put it in a better place. Also with the fasteners your gonna need to buy lots of them because they do not like to be reused

I’ve been using motorcraft 5w30 blend all this time. Any problem switching to full synthetic from pennzoil platinum?

If you had the FX4 package you would be fighting the skid plate mounts.

Was there a metal washer on the oil drain plug?

I just bought a 2021 Ranger Lariat and changed my oil at 6,000 miles. Ford says every 5,000 which is what I will do next time.
