The 2019 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 12-27 January. For its 81st edition the tournament boasts six Top 10 players including World Champion Magnus Carlsen and former champions Vladimir Kramnik and Vishy Anand. As well as the traditional venue in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, rounds will be played in Alkmaar (16 January) and in Leiden (23 January).
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If two or more players tie for first place then a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game will be held 15 minutes after all the games in the Masters and Challengers have finished, though the monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Pulling a Schlechter sounds incredibly dirty. The suspect was arrested for public intoxication, indecent exposure and pulling a Schlecter. Bail is set at $50,000.

Hey Antonio, i really enjoy all your videos. It's kind of addicting sometimes. I know covering good tournament games and series on great chess legends is really fun to watch and provides vast knowledge. #suggestion Although i think you should start a series where you teach an opening line every week. That would really help a lot of viewers improve on their theory knowledge. Please cover at least one opening every month (if not every week). Thank you for such great content. Your videos give life to chess.

@@elginngzhing4026 That's correct. But a basic understanding of the opening will help to avoid certain traps. We can obviously choose to play or not to play with the opening theory. But it would definitely help create better understanding of the game in my opinion.

Just a suggestion; it would be cool to see the time remaining for each player during each position of the game as it was played. It would add another angle/perspective on the thought process the players faced... especially in key positions of the game. For instance; both Giri and Carlsen would have 100 minutes shown next to their name at the start of the match, and as the game went on- say move 14 for example, the time clock next to their names would have elapsed to time they had in that position when it was played.

Perhaps the reason Carlsen thought for so long is that he had prepared an alternative to Kh8 but realized he did not have to disclose it to win the tournament. So he was just re-evaluating his known line to make sure he could secure the draw. I suspect that Fischer often did not play the best move in complicated positions for the same reason, knowing that a second best move would likely succeed. Hence I find Kasparov's critique in his book of Fischer making intuitive moves rather than the best move rather suspect.

Great vid as usual, Antonio. Why did Giri agree to draw if he needed win? Why not play it out...according to final standings it looks like Giri was assured 2nd place even if he lost. He's apparently been trying to shake his draw-prone reputation lately but this seems to reinforce it

Lets say all human who combined play against eacht other so 1 play against 2 but 1 also plays against 3 etc. Lets say they all play different moves. Than there would still be 3^6 chess endings that we wouldn’t see. And now you have to realise there are multiple ways to get to the same ending.
