I’m really glad to hear you address this man. I’m a pretty big fan of Hank Williams Sr. and as much as I love the yodeling boy video it made me a little sad that no one even knew the song he was singing or the artist he was covering. There’s so much great heartfelt music from that period of country musics history that’s been all but lost by the very genre that spawned it.
@ShotgunBuddha46986 жыл бұрын
Looking at the jazz scene for instance, there’s still a lot of reverence for guys like Charlie Parker and Dizzy and their songs and licks are still played and studied by jazz musicians today. There’s an argument there as to whether the art form needs to move past the bebop idiom a little more than it has, but I think it would be really sad to see the work of these innovators completely forgotten about. And when it comes to mainstream country music, that kind of loss seems to already happened.

I like what you said. Perhaps country does need to be explored more, especially the more serious artists. So why not take advantage of this opportunity and review some of the artists that take the genre more seriously. People like Justin Townes Earle, Charlie Crockett, and Pokey LaFarge. I don't know how familiar you are with the genre, and I am sure you don't need my reassurance. But don't let a lack of knowledge deter you from reviewing. Your video on Natalia Lafourcade blew me away and introduced me to a genre of music that was beyond my tastes, but I certainly needed to hear. Keep on killing it Honkthany Tonktano!

This along with other videos you’ve done recently like the one about Gibson losing business really bring up some interesting conversations that need to happen about the cycle of trends in popular culture and how everything seems so inevitably temporary now. I think over the years the music industry has become such that they are in a perpetual state of trying to create “the next big thing” and so there literally is a brand new style of music coming out every single year and it lasts anywhere from 6 months to 5 years max. Everything just happens faster now because of technology and the inter connectivity that the internet and social media bring. While to a certain degree this is unavoidable in a free market economy and makes for a lot of musical innovation, we as a nation need to celebrate our culture and our history. I think what needs to happen is for the government to promote and give grants to artists who are very talented but play genres which are no longer popular. It’s necessary because even if none of these older genres are ever quite going to have a comeback, people still need to know about them in order to fully understand who we are as a people.

I think was a special case, as far as a "meme" translating into ticket sales for a concert. Maybe I'm an optimist, but I think more people find him admirable than really funny. I don't think people at Coachella were laughing at him (or even with him). I think the people at Coachella were stoked for this kid because he actually is talented and he is someone that probably deserves some notoriety. This breaks off from the other "meme-people" like Danielle Bregoli (who people actually want to make fun of because they seem like genuinely worthless people). I don't disagree that there is a shock factor and humor to what is happening with this kid, but I feel like it's the most wholesome type of meme-culture event that could happen.

K-Next yes very much, all the time. Yeah, but you said classmates, so I assume you're talking about children. I was talking about how adults view this kid (and Anthony was saying that too). It's not a shocker that kids are mean and can't do anything without ruining it.

+Tommy M I'm talking about 17 year olds here. Besides, younger people are the biggest consumers of music. Edit: When you say kids, I assume you mean 12 - 14 year olds
@tommym73216 жыл бұрын
K-Next yes very much, all the time. I consider "kids" people who are younger than millennials. So it fits my guidelines basically. And they are big consumers of music, but like you said, this isn't the type of music they are exposed to. What i'm saying is that people who are informed on old country (adults) are the ones shelling out money for Coachella (or shelling out money for their children to attend Coachella). The crowd at Coachella is mainly millennial. And if you watch the video of him at Coachella it looks like the crowd was actually supportive instead of being mean.

The thing to remember is that, while Yodel Boy was on a stage at Coachella, NOBODY bought a ticket specifically to hear Yodel Boy. I'd bet that few people even knew that he'd be there. He was just given the experience, probably without pay, to make an appearance because some people knew it would generate buzz with a melon. Music is changing, and certain elements are dying. Country from the 1970s, blues, and rock are all taking a back seat and fading. This is to be expected, even though I remember a time when they all lifted each other up by the bootstraps to make things happen. Now we have 5 versions of how to "drop the bass," or whatever. It's got no soul, no feeling, and smells of corporate greed. Maybe that's how the mainstream has always been. I stopped looking at the mainstream when that new band Bon Jovi showed up. But if you want to hear a true PRO yodel, then check out Slim Whitman. Dude can also whistle.

I listened to a Radiolab podcast a couple years ago on NPR. They were discussing how a lot of the melodies and progressions found in country music was found in the more folk/country music of a place like Afghanistan. How certain tunes transcend cultures. They segment went on to discuss the large fanbases of some American country artists in, I think, South Africa...the same way K-pop has it's place here. Even with the language barrier the tradition and style of story-telling has it's place. I don't know where I'm going with this... I guess, I feel country music may be at a slump, but it is embedded too firmly into our traditions to ever truly disappear. Maybe evolve, but it has a stronger foundation than something like the blues, even.

I agree that country music has lost touch of its roots, but no genre is as dead and off-track as rock currently is. Seriously, go look at the top purchased rock songs on iTunes. The top two songs are both by *GODSMACK* for fuck's sake, and about 5 or 6 out of the top 20 are classic rock songs like Don't Stop Believing and Rocket Man. lmao
@Chelaxim6 жыл бұрын
Lefty Jones Well Godsmack no matter what you think about the quality of their music at least they sound like rock. You have people like Imagine Dragons whose style of rock is barely rock to the point where Disney Channel rock from the 2000s sounds more rock. You know rock music has gotten soft when Hillary Duff had more guitars and physical drums than new 30 Seconds to Mars,AFI and Muse.

There's plenty of good rock musicians that aren't mainstream. The mainstream rock may be trash, but good rock is still alive.
@harryjang34086 жыл бұрын
There's plenty of good rock and the way we see past rock albums as legendary has kept the genre dormant but simultaneously alive. Mainstream charts don't mean shit. Country on the other hand is just borderline non-existent, no one in this current day and age can name any country music other than 'Cotton-eye Joe' from their high school prom. I reckon the legacy of a genre and it's previous impact on society sustains a genre's relevancy.
@coochie86706 жыл бұрын
It's far from dead, my friend. You're just not looking in the right places (or at all honestly if you're looking at the charts on itunes). Try looking on kingdom-leaks, or alterportal for rock and all of it's subgenres. If you just look at what only the big companies show you, then of course you won't find anything worthwhile.

This is such an interesting issue to me -- and there's not an easy solution. Sometimes I think we need to reclaim the word "country" and champion modern greats like Tyler Childers, Tami Neilson, or Joshua Hedley, and other times I think that it's a lost cause. I wonder if, like you said, it's become too much a "subgenre of pop" to be redeemed, so maybe truly country singers should just rebrand as Americana or something else and call it a day.

Folk or Bluegrass. As a Kentuckian, that's what we've always called it. Folk is a better umbrella term, though. It encompasses a lot of different "country" sounds & is a classic genre. Everyone knows what "folk" is, too, because every native population has a form of it or another. :) Country "pop" is good for a party type of music, but it doesn't stand the test of time as well, imo.

I agree it’s a lost cause. Country music has such a bad rep nowadays. The only solution to bring the old classic sound back is to rebrand.

The original sound will always have an underground following which almost makes it more appealing. I've been listening to a lot of Sturgill Simpson lately.

Sometimes I feel people can't take anything seriously anymore.. This meme reminded me how enjoyable classic country music can be. I feel we should call him by his name and get him a record deal and continue to embrace authentic talent.

My generation (a 20 year old) really has a hard time respecting and understanding past generations in there art, morals and all aspects of culture to be honest. If it is not popular now to a good portion of them it seems outdated, irrelevant, and ready for criticism. While everything is able to get criticism, its important to understand and respect its historical importance in how what was once popular evolved overtime to influence whats popular today, instead of outright dismissing it and passing it off as unimportant.
@David32Finkbeiner6 жыл бұрын
ghostly doe obviously Its not me if I'm criticizing that view point which is very common in my or our generation. I don't even need to say not all bc everyone knows that but a big portion and you can tell that by how disconnected a lot of them are from history

I'm 25 and I love old music. Lots of different genres. But I honestly have hardly listened to anything new in the past few years. There just isn't a whole lot of shit out there today that sounds good to me. Idk.

Thank you Anthony, for perfectly articulating my exact thoughts on this meme, and for voicing why I felt sad about it. As a Hank Williams fan I was upset that his music that was so emotional to me was just a joke to people around the world (I'm from the UK) but I guess country is nothing but a joke now with its cheesy formulaic lyrics and chords, hoping for an americana revival soon

Spencer Chudyk yeah, but those two sorta solidified it and made it official that country would stay that way in the mainstream. It’s a shame because there’s really good country out there that is about actual pain and real shit and not about a dirt road and fucking a girl on a bale of hay while your horses watch.
