According to Sid himself, in a few interviews, the powers that be in WCW at the time requested that Sid add more flashy top rope moves to his arsenal. He chose this one. He regretted it immediately.

I still say it’s Sid’s own fault that he tried something like a big boot. I would have gone with a double axe handle, which you can land safely from and that doesn’t take a lot of agility to do. Plus, it would have looked great coming from someone that size. But when you are Sid’s size and land on one leg, yeah, you can’t expect it to go well.

It was his idea to add "more flashy moves from off the ropes". Sid, not being able to come up with anything that made sense for a guy his size, chose that. He should've known that wasn't a good choice before he snapped the last third of his leg. It was a pretty stupid suggestion overall.

IIRC Sid was pinned after his accident, Animal and Stiner started kicking him on the ground and just pinned him ending the match quickly. To make matter worse, Sid didn't want to use a top rope move, management told him to add it in to surprise the fans with, they thought a top rope big boot would make the croud pop for whatever reason.

Yes the match was supposed to end when one of the wrestlers in the strapmatch couldn’t take anymore and to end the match the loser was supposed to so “I respect you” to his opponent. No because the match had hardly started and they hadn’t even put their hands in the strap when Brian Pillman rushes at a confused referee, grabs the mic out his hand, says “I respect you Bookerman” to an audible laugh from some of the audience and confusion to everyone else as Brian Pillman walks back to the locker room giving the middle finger to the crowd
