I did this yesterday to 1 wall..it came out perfectly..it really is about patience tho! I used the same color too! At first it looked like you could see the putty lines thru the paint..1st they were lighter then it started to look like dark streaks..but as it dries you could NOT tell at all! I only used 1 coat..second coat is going down today! This test wall was the deciding factor on whether or not I was gonna do the whole house...and the verdict IS YES! IT LOOKS AMAZING..even tho it's a lot of extra work & a little extra expense..it is so worth it to me!

Everything had that cheap wood look, even the windows..but using white trim & the grey feels like a breath of fresh air! Now I've got to replace the flooring (Lord it looks like it's camouflage green 🙄) & do the other 3 walls. I will send you some pictures as soon as I get some "afters"..gotta purchase the light fixtures & get the furniture out of the way. I spent three day days going all the way around a large family room prepping for paint. 1 lap sanding the paneling, then 1 coat primer, then three laps around the room spackling the paneling lines, letting the spackling dry for 24 hours in between each application, sanding in between every coat, 3 times around the room. Then it took another three days priming the walls over those spackling coats, and spot spackling where need in between paint coats to cover visible lines, right over the primer paint. Finally satisfied with the prep work after two weeks, it was time for color, a dark teal. The dark teal paint went on well, but it became evident two coats was going to be needed to cover the white primer. Satisfied with the coverage, after a couple of days we started seeing lines beginning to reappear. Apparently the spackling shrank and was only covered in spots where the spackling was applied very heavily... The moral of this story; just do it right in the first place and take the paneling down and put up drywall. We didn't save a thing by being cheap. The room looks,...OK,....I won't be redoing it, but just be aware, no matter what you do, no matter how many weeks of un-ending tedious prep work you do, those lines are never going to completely disappear. It is wooden paneling. Wood reacts to humidity changes, by expanding and contracting. Perhaps if we used quick dry mud instead of spackle the coverage would have been better, but its still wood paneling. It's still going to react to humidity changes.

I have done this to several homes and I’ve never had any problems with it, but I have never put it over top of primer either🤷♀️

I looked for a video like this for days, not finding any I set out to try this. since I had a damaged piece that needed replaced I used it as my trial piece. Several things I found out, it took 3 applications of mud ( I used the powdered 45 min mix) to fill in the cracks. After priming the surface with Kilz I gave it a coat of paint then a second. And here's something I wonder if any body else came across. After the paint dried I still could see faint lines . I took some 120 grit sandpaper and went up and down on the lines of another piece of scrap and repeated the same process that seemed to have worked. This paneling is in a downstairs gameroom and is about 40 years old. The paint roller I used was for smooth surfaces and only 1/4 thick. I'm only half way done with this project and will switch to a 1 1/4 inch nap. Thanks for your video i believe you are the only one out there that has done this.
