Most clients are awesome. But sometimes, you’ll end up with a client so difficult that to protect your company, you need to show them the door. Here’s how to fire a client as painlessly as possible so you can get back to business.

Thanks for the video, Although our business are different the email template was a great example of how to fire a client. I will be using something similar, wish me luck as this is my first client I am going to fire.

Thanks for your comment, Steve! It's definitely a tough decision to make, but ultimately it's better for both you and the client. Best of luck!

I build in a 60 day termination notice into my contracts. when i get a client who needs to go, i devise ways to get them to sack me. So then I collect 2 months retainer which is $5-8 k for doing nothing. Then i work on replacing them twice over with 2 new clients, while they finance me as i do. The trick is to get then to fire you in a way that won’t hurt your reputation. Don’t leave money on the table when you can get paid for doing nothing. Is it underhanded? Not when you consider what they cost you in frustration up to that point.

I disagree with doing everything you can to mend the relationship and trying to make it better. Sometimes it’s just not the right fit no matter what. A client that drains you is going to bring you down overall and affects your ability to show up for other clients. I always recommend a 30 day notice. I know 30 days is difficult but that gives them plenty of time to hire someone else. I also recommend offering to provide assistance to the new agency to make the transition easier. That always helps ease the tension.

Good video. I’m not sure if I would write an email - hate to put something like that in writing. I’ve got a situation now that I’m trying to deal with, a client that I’m no longer getting along with. I was thinking about introducing a freelancer to accept some of the services when I’m not available and then slowly transitioning the client to that person. I would still retain them as a client, but I wouldn’t have to deal with them day-to-day. If it turned out I still had to ‘fire’ them, I could say that my business is moving in a different direction and he/she will be handling your account.

I recently had to call up a client to leave them because I had other opportunities. Also, she was not paying me on time by the weekly schedule. I do feel bad because I was offering tutoring services, but I was not paid on time. I asked her about the copy of a book to look over for lesson planning, and she did not send it to me or give it to me to plan out my lessons for the hour and a 1/2 so that was the last straw.

Absolutely! It's not always easy, but it sounds like she wasn't a good match for you and your services. Hopefully, you'll have more time and energy to focus on clients who will better respect your time and expertise!

Got a question. I do private tutoring. One of my clients is such an odd one out in terms of scheduling and location that it really cuts into my free time. I.e., without them I would have a solid 48 hours in a row off, and also their home isn't in the best place to drive in terms of traffic and safety. For a variety of reasons I haven't been able to negotiate either the location, scheduling or price, but the kid (7 years old) is so nice to work with and I'd hate to disappoint him. It's so awkward, but I'm tempted to get rid of them but want to do so amicably. Am I in line to feel this way?

I sent them a very neutral email 2 days ago to say that I don't think we are a great fit and that I would complete the next 2 weeks with their son, my student. They replied with a snotty email saying why they didn't think I was the right tutor for them, anyway 😅. They insisted we terminate the tuition immediately. But it's a huge relief that I don't have to deal with the mom anymore

I'm literally UNDERPAID and I want to do this so bad. I wish I could. Will this be unprofessional?

I don’t really agree. You can just cast them away by giving them unreasonable prices for the work load they hire you for.

Absolutely! You should have a more balanced approach other than raising prices on clients in a tense business relationship. We hope you liked the other tips in this video. Thanks for watching!
